I need help to do that and to be sure my PC will correctly restart.

The current state is described below

There are a total of 5 entries listed in the bootloader.
Default: Windows 7 on C:

Boot Drive: D:\ volume name Windows7_2
Entry #1
Name: Microsoft Windows XP New on D;:
BCD ID: {3e88e2fd-7977-11e2-afbb-a387d45a4003}
Drive: D:\ volumename Films&Video
Bootloader Path: \NST\ntldr
Entry #2

BCD ID: {current}
Drive: C:\ volume name Windows7_2
Bootloader Path: \Windows\system32\winload.exe

  • Partition/Drvie D: contains a not completed installation of W7 becvause of a failing USB setup.
Why does this occurs ? I don't know.
This partition is marked as active and resides on disk 0

  • Partition C : contains a full completed and functional installation of W7
This partition is marked as active and resides on disk 2 and is numbered 1
On this drive there is
my official installation of XP on partition 2 (logical)
a copy of this partition as backup on partition 3(logical)
both of them reside in an extended partition.

My wish :

  • Configure the boot process to have only a dual boot menu XPwin 7
  • delete from the drve the D: the unnecessary files of the 1rst failing install

I should be happy if you can describe the process I have to follow to do that.

Thank you for this very interresting article.
But it does not help me in resolving my issue.
My config is currently the following

HDD named "HDD1"
2nd HDD for booting
1 partition with data only
ACTIVE
contains no OS

HDD named "HDD2"
1st HDD for booting
2 partitions
1 partition with Win 7 and is active
1 partition with XP and is not active

Boot processes

Current :
shows a menu with XP only

when setting "HDD1" as 1st HDD for booting (f12 or bios)
shows a menu with Win 7 and XP : both a startable and functional

I would like to make HDD2 the only boot disk and suppress from HDD1 all boot data.

What have I to do in EZBcd to do that ?

When you install W7 it will always try to put its boot files in a separate partition unless you force it to use the same partition as the OS.
The default action, if you give it empty space, is to create a little "System Reserved" boot partition. If it can't do that (because you didn't leave it any unallocated space) it will place the files in an active partition on another drive unless you take steps to prevent that too.
You can remedy the situation post factum like this
