Linux (ubuntu )

Yep, should work.

Where are you located, btw? Texas? (you mention CST & hurricanes - can't think of anywhere else with both....)

^ yes Sir

ive been here for about a year and half now.

okay one more Disk to make and ill be on my way to install lol

---

update:

okay backup of data done, i have formated the drive in windows so that it does not have anything on it the current partition still on windows of my 160Gb drive is 129Gb, the rest is already been formatted into linux useable, however, i am just going to let the installer take the whole drive to do what it needs to do.

also, does GRUB install it's self? when i install the linux distro. i have read around alot of needing to install it... (when others have had errors lol )

Yep.

It's really really straight-forward with Ubuntu. Just stick the DVD in the drive, and install.

Everything should work right out of the box (even better than it does on Windows!!).

Seriously, it's not worth any fretting or worrying any over; it seriously "just works" if you install Windows first and Linux second.

^ okay dokay, i will be rebooting and checking this under the Ubuntu LIve CD before i install

i dont have a DVD version, i downloaded and burned the image to a CD, thats should make no difference right?

^ okay error again!

the same one.. here are the screenshots:
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r317/toofuairi/Screenshot-1.png (the selection of where to install )
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r317/toofuairi/Screenshot.png (the error)
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r317/toofuairi/Screenshot-2.png (the drives, i just now after the error occurred unmounted the "main040Storage" ill try it again right now....

idk what is wrong, it was on guided install

should i just format the whole drive down to just one large ext3 drive?

It could be caused by any number of things, but here are my thoughts:

1) Not rebooting after creating the partition in GParted (note that you can create partitions during the setup, not necessarily in the live CD environment)
2) The failed integrity checks. Use the standard, stock Ubuntu CD for best results.

^ okay, yes i did have two files have errors

and i do have a standard ubuntu current released version

how do i enter setup out side of the live CD environment?

i load the CD and i get the options:

start/install ubuntu
start ubuntu on safe graphics settings
check integrity
check memory
and install drivers is in there too, maybe something else

MAJOR UPDATE (lol )

Thank you Computer Guru, sir

~this thread is now finished~

i have ubuntu up and running and it is downloading updates and such

i havent added ubuntu to the EasyBCD yet, next time i run my vista (idk when that will be lol ) ill added it, i just need to add the HHD where the linux is correct?

and it did not overwrite my vista boot, because it took me to the easybcd boot screen and i Ctrl-alt-del back to restart and went into the boot menu and choose the drive that linux was on, and it worked perfect!!!!

i ran easyBCD just now, on vista and i removed the now deleted XP and added the linux.

i have

partition 0 as native linux - 146Gb
partition 1 as extended 3Gb
partition 2 as Linux Swap 3Gb

it worked perfect!

thanks for the product CG!

Addendum:

Alright like i said i added the linux to the EasyBCD

and i rebooted and it went to the easybcd screen with my choices. and i selected linux and hit enter, the screen went black and went right back to the easyBCD selection screen...

idk, i can remove the vista bootloader right, through easyBCD just hit deleted vista bootloader?

and then i can just use grub to load into vista, GRUB works fine i havent tried loading vista through it yet, but i wont be doing alot of switching

and i found out i can have my favorite emulator (for GBA ) on ubuntu YAY!

ill just deleted the vista bootloader next time i get on vista, is thaty right, it will then just load GRUB right off the bat right? i had to boot-menu to my linux HHD to get on to GRUB

Congratulations are in order, Kahai! Awesome news there! :grinning:

OK, in Vista delete the old Linux entry & create a new one - this time specify "GRUB isn't installed to the bootsector" before adding it though.

Reboot and see what happens.

Good luck!

^ okay dokay ill reboot tomorrow, its 4 am here im going to bed lol linux kept me up lol

and thank you, i was very happy when it worked and i havent had any other problems yet.

Addendum:

okay i in vista again now, and i have easybcd up, and im in the adding entires tab, how make it so it that: "GRUB isn't installed to the bootsector"??

ive been clicking around in different tabs... i didnt want to mess anythign up, so what do i do??

What version of EasyBCD do you have?

If you're using 1.7+, it should be right there in the "Linux" section of "Add/Remove Entries" right next to the "Add Entry" button.

^^^ NO u wasnt

i am still on 1.6... boo lol i hit the check for updates from the menu

thank you

---

its downloading Tweak IV now

i just went to the easyBCD info page and hit the download link

---

i installed easybcd 1.7 and it was there i hit that and added it, and saved it and then i changed the order, to have linux on top of vista, should that make it auto load linux instead of vista?

No, you'll have to the "edit settings" page (or whatever the second page is called!) and set the default OS from there.

---

Are you saying the "Check for updates" didn't work?!

---

Anyway, I recommend testing if the Linux entry works first, then setting it as the default

BTW, if you switch between Vista and Linux a lot, take a look at iReboot.

^

i was using easybcd 1.6 and i hit check for updates and on the bottum left hand corner it said it found an update, is it supposed to do something after that?

---

im reading about ireboot now thank you again for such great programs lol

yes ill make sure it loads in a minute or so before. the second button/tab it "change settings" lol

^ oh... oh well i have easybcd1.7 lol

i did however just run into a new problem.

i downloaded ireboot and i used that to reboot to my linux, and i recieved this error:

Code:
windows failed to start....... Hardware or software changes....

...blah talking about recovery...

....

File: \NST\Neogrub.mbr

Status: 0xc000000f

...

(... = wording)

i hit enter to continue, it took me to the OS selection screen and i hit enter on linux and it took me back to that error

i CTRL-ATL-DEL my way back to reboot and boot-menu'd to GRUB

i know this may have occured beucase i did not shut dont and let things settle :frowning:

^ it does not

Code:
Couldn't display "http://\nst\neogrub.mbr", because no host "\nst\neogrub.mbr" could be found.
what now? :frowning:

(also- may i use those userbars on other sites/boards with the correct links? )
