Computer Gaming

For online gaming, the most important thing isn't the speed (very little data is actually transferred) so much as it is the latency.

Latency is the "lag" between when you send a packet and someone else receives it. Because you are in Jeddah, your latency to any of the CoD servers will be very high (they're all in Europe, America, and Australia), so you'll have a high ping and connection issues.

As for TimeShift, try lowering the shader options in the game settings.

well this is my status report:
1- i have the latest ATI display drivers from the ATI website.
2- the game is updated to the latest version 1.2
3- the graphics and shadow/shader settings are all on the highest
yet i still seem to have the problem
i believe there is an issue between this game and ATI drivers/graphics card (at least thats what i read)
i guess ill play it the way it is and wait for my brother to come from college in the break. hes a real computer wiz.:booyah::booyah:

Your problem here would be #3. You need to lower the shaders down. Having them on high is for Uber Gaming machines that have like Dual 8800GTX cards in SLi mode. For your machine you will probably only be able to run the shaders on low.

yeah thanks guys.
i lowered them and it got a whole lot better.
how about the suffering anybody know anything about that?

well if he hosted it through hamachi that might be different for him lol

i have been playing online on a private server and my ping hasnt gone above 350

most people are around 200, while the lowest i have seen for me was 139 and others have been lower

If you are running Vista have you tried it in Compatiblity mode?

Just keep in mind that many games use a lot of hacks and loopholes to accomplish what they need with maximum performance, so if that still doesn't work, it's possible that the game simply isn't Vista compatible.... There a ton of games to choose from though, so no big loss, eh?

It's no different. Instead of connecting directly to the CoD servers, you're going through Hamachi's VPN cluster - if you're far away from a VPN server, you're still in trouble.

The actual ping value does not matter (much) so long as everyone is the same. 350 is, quite honestly, terrible. For me, I get ~200 ping connecting to the Halo servers (not good), but since most people in the States get around 30-90 ping, it's even worse.

The only way to work around this is to set up your own server, and have others in your region connect to it. That way, you'll all have low ping.

Actually there are some newer games that are not Vista compatible. Quake 4 is one of hte ones i know of that wont even isntall on Vista. I know Doom 3 some people say has issues. But i have not had any.

I havent been able to get it booting on my Vista Ultimate. I will try it again later when i boot back to Windows.

One beautiful day, in far future, I'll spend 20.000 euros on a PC :tongueout: and have fastest PC in the country

People, what happened with nVidia 9xxx series? Shouldn't it be out in november?

^ okay

so earlier i had my ping around 200

but now its alot higher 290, 298... :frowning: i cant connect to the private servers, my ping is too high

what are the cuases of high ping?

the server im trying to connect to is in Chicago...

Texas and Chicago aren't too far apart - are you trying to connect from within the University though?

^ yes sir

but i think i figured it out

i stayed up playing over the night, while the universities network wasnt in great use, its sunday and people are doing things on the network

ill just check every now and then

i do know i had slightly lower ping at the Lan Party

the set up was that the dedicated server was on the same sides as me, so i didnt have to connect to a switch, just a router, would that actually help?

In most University networks I've seen, there's a lot of internal ping due to all the routing and networking-hopping that they have going on.

There isn't anything you can do about besides playing at a time with little traffic

^ understood

or i can find a server that has a higher ping limit lol

btu most of them im finding are in the UK :frowning:

i need to stop playing anyways

its very addictive

Yes Guru is right. While i play CS:S online a lot along with some other games my Ping is usually less than 100. If it gets over 200 i usually dont connect.

Your high ping will be due to the network constantly being in use by someone. If you were on a connection at home the network is only in use by you so the ping times will be way down. But at a University someone is always doing something which causes your ping to be super high all the time.

Sadly there isnt anyway around this. Uless you play a lot of single player games that include the net.

^ lol

well like i said, i can play all night and keep my ping down lol id be the one of few people using the network lol
