Never Buy Domains from 1&1

Never, ever buy domains from 1&1. Why? Let’s just put it this way: if a domain was a physical good that had to be shipped from one end of the USA to the other, or even imported from Europe to the States, it wouldn’t take as long for you to get it as it does when you buy from 1and1.

I’ve bought my fair share of domains via 1and1, and to be honest, on the few times in the past when I’ve needed the domain name ASAP, generally got the domain I bought within 24 hours. But now it’s been 4 days and 1and1 still hasn’t handed over the domain name that I bought and paid for. Instead, the domain shows up in the list of purchases with the status “The domain has been requested” – as if I care! I just want my domain name, and I want it now! The clients are waiting!

Get Your Own .MS Domain Name Today!

Microsoft has started using .MS domains to power their web platforms! Luckily for you, .MS isn’t just for Microsoft and you can get your own .ms domain today – if you have $180 to spare!

Yep, that’s right. Microsoft has gone Web 2.0 and is now using “their own” gTLD to push Microsoft-powered web platforms to the next level. While browsing the new Popfly project (which doesn’t run on Linux), we were interested to find ourselves being redirected to “http://popfly.ms/” leading us to wonder. Microsoft isn’t breaking any laws or circumventing any of the usual steps: .MS domain names are officially assigned to one of the last overseas British territories, Montserrat, named by Christopher Columbus back in 1493; but the .ms domain name is open to the public regardless of region or political affiliation.

Just like some people are using .IT (intended for Italy and Italy alone) to power IT-related websites (as in Information Technology, and not anything to do with Italy), Microsoft is using Montserrat’s TLD (and paying 180 USD a domain) to power their Web 2.0 creations.

You can purchase your own .MS domain name here; and just for kicks, check out http://google.ms/ :D

Funnily enough, Microsoft.ms doesn’t load, and MSN.ms doesn’t even exist. Interesting…

How long before Microsoft sues to own the .MS tld and everything on it? (all your base are belong to us, anyone?)

WordPress-in-the-Name Issues

The inevitable has happened, WordPress has gotten too big for its supporters’ boots. Copyright issues have always (respectfully) existed, but now it’s witch-hunt time. As always, these things are rarely directly-sponsored by the actual copyright holders but rather by a gang of loyal zealots errr fans. They tend to cause unwarranted panic and anger, and normally carry things far overboard — certainly more than their creators intended.

This time it’s WordPress bloggers on the rampage, and by the looks of it, they’e making a far bigger deal out of things than they need to. According to Lorelle, at the moment just anyone that has the term “WordPress” in their domain name (not title) needs to get rid of it. Immediately.
