Firefox Cut & Paste: 1 Bug, 4 Years, No Solution!

I love competition in the market just as much as the other guy. I’m comfortable with IE7, Opera, FF, and if the need be, Safari.
For the most part, I use Firefox nightly for general web browsing, and IE7 for forums and blogs. However, invariably, without fail, every single time a I install Firefox, within a month I am forced to either format or use IE7/Opera instead. This has been going on ever since I started using "Firefox" 3 years ago.

The Bug? No longer being able to cut and paste. AFAIK (from my programming experience), cut and paste is a simple API, you tell it what to copy and the PC does the rest. So imagine my frustration whet every single install of Firefox goes senile on me, and starts to forget to copy every now and then. It continues to get worse.

For the first month or so, Firefox runs perfect, when I tell it to copy, it copies; and when I don’t, it doesn’t. But before I know it, when I select text and attempt to copy (either ctrl+c, or right-click -> copy, or Edit -> Copy), instead of copying it empties the clipboard. I close Firefox, open Word, ReGet, IE, or something just to find out that my clipboard is empty. Thank God for Firefox’s "Go" menu and its list of recent sites, but that’s quite besides the point…

I don’t normally bug non-reproducibles. There really is no point IMO since they rarely are acted upon. But today I was posting something, then decided to cut and paste it into IE to use ieSpell.. *poof* it was gone. A page disappeared in a world of zeroes and ones. Enough is enough, I went to bugzilla to post it, then on instinct did a search… And I couldn’t believe my eyes! Over 20 separate reports, the first of which was posted in March 2002!! That bug report alone had over 60 comments and complaints, coming in steady for four years! Yet even now there is no solution. It exists in all builds, stable or otherwise, nightly, hourly, and more.

I have taken this particular bug on as my mission. If I have the time, I’ll go through the source, but I think the best way to help is to bring it to attention. Firefox cannot expect to beat the competition without seriously thinking about 4 year old bug reports with no solutions and constant complaints and feedback.

Please help making the world of internet browsers and the competition between them a better place! Link to this post, vote the bug on bugzilla, check out the code, seed and digg the story!

A fix is now available! Please see our post here for details and download links to a good version of Firefox, courtesy of NeoSmart Technologies!

Did you try the 5 R’s? …oh wait, that’s for iPods! PS:  Your blog’s commenting doesn’t like FF either!  I think you’re cursed!

  2. 2 TKDWILSON Mar 12th, 2006 at 10:52 pm

I have used firefox years and nothing has happened like this yet.   Eric Wilson

That is strange, I have been using "firefox" for the same amount of time and I have had to install it once on any pc I use, and it works without fail until …… I reformat and install it all over again. To be honest, i don’t use any other browser (aside from the occasional IE for a specific .asp page or something). Strange.

  4. 4 Computer Guru Mar 12th, 2006 at 11:01 pm

Yeah it is weird. That’s why its a non-repro…. but it defenitely isn’t a figment of my/our imagination…

I have seen it on Linux and Windows. Maybe it has something to do with running a nightly once?

  5. 5 WipeMyTears Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:06 am

You aren’t dreaming on this one. Happens all the time on my XP system where I end up having to copy a few random lines of Outlook to get the copying going again…

  6. 6 Bug Victim Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:09 am

I HATE this bug! I’ve had it on several different computers and for the most part it’s non-reproducible. I’ve started using Avant Browser because of it. It’s a real shame because besides this horrible bug I like firefox the best out of all the browsers.

  7. 7 fooey Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:10 am

I’ve seen this on both the computer’s I’ve used and other computers around the officeIt’s very frustrating =\

  8. 8 Glen Goldsmith Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:13 am

Weird.  It must be a conflict with another software package… as I’ve **never** had this problem.  So what gives?

  9. 9 Shizlanski Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:14 am

I have that exact problem too! Argh! Stupid FF….FF

  10. 10 Thunderbird Too Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:14 am

I’ve also experienced this bug in Thunderbird too. Not as often but it does happen.

  11. 11 Jason Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:15 am

i have the same problem…. to be quite frank as a programmer too, it sucks.

  12. 12 Emanuel Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:15 am

Doesn’t Mozilla/Firefox use the GTK toolkit? Perhaps its because its a GTK bug and not Gecko related. I’ve noticed other GTK apps have this copy/paste behavior.

  13. 13 droopy928gt Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:16 am

Now for another commment.  I’ve had this same bug, but the need to reinstall, since I started using FF (about 2 years ago).  I recently installed 1.5 and to my relieve I’ve not seen it yet. (Knock on wood)  It is definitely there.  For me so far it has been found on 3 different computers all with english w2k pro installations.  I also do not understand where it comes from nor why someone at Mozilla hasn’t take it more seriously.  It’s probably the difficulty in reproduction which is killing the solution for this annoyance.  Unfortunatelu I don’t have the knowledge to go through program sources but my God I’d wish some programmer suffering this bug would.Regards,

  14. 14 Kuipo Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:18 am

I get this occasionally but it’s pretty rare and doesn’t seem to get worse as this author seems to imply.  I can stand it when the rest of FF is so much better than the competition.  I also know that a great deal of people that DO use firefox don’t have this problem. On a side note, my friend kept telling me that it was my wireless keyboard.  But I’ve never had ANY other problems with the kb.  NOW i can tell him that it defiantly isn’t my keyboard.

  15. 15 TerroristBush Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:18 am

That is wierd, maybe you just have some virus that a computer hacker has installed to terrorize you when your using firefox???

  16. 16 Moojj Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:19 am

Make sure you’re not using a program in the background that may be keeping track of the copy/paste API calls. I had similar problems when using GetRight and other various download management tools that keep an eye on the clipboard.

  17. 17 Rob Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:28 am

same as above… Long time user of Firefox and have never had a problem with Firefox not copying/pasting.

  18. 18 the-edmeister Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:28 am

I use ZIP-archive build nightlies exclusively on W2K and don’t have a problem with copy & paste - EVER. Typically I install a new version every week, but there are ’special’ versions that I use for over 6 months. I never use IE 5.0 and never bothered to install 6.0 - it’s either Firefox or K-Meleon 100% of the time.

  19. 19 stabani Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:28 am

been using firefox for almost 3 years, and just tried the copy and paste thing right now, and it seems to work, and has worked for as long as I can remember… :-D

  20. 20 Young Crazy Fool Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:30 am

Strange, I use FF on every PC i work on, and i never noticed this bug. Is there a special action taken before the bug turns up, or does it happen randomly?

  21. 21 Kristin Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:31 am

Thank you for mentioning this! I’m glad it’s not just happening to me; I thought maybe it was some weird thing going on with my computer.

  22. 22 Daydreamer Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:35 am

Yes! I’ve seen this many times on my own system! It’s one of the reasons I switched to Opera a few months ago. My system ran Windows 2000 at the time.

    I hope it gets fixed.

  23. 23 Tim Dorr Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:38 am

And you think IE6 didn’t have rendering bugs for years that are only just being addressed with IE7? ;)

  24. 24 Vedichymn Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:41 am

Oh hay there, copy/paste rage buddy.

This is seriously my biggest Firefox complaint. You’re not alone, you’re not insane, it happens to me too. :(
I’ve started to see it from time to time in Thunderbird too.

  25. 25 Bernie Zimmermann Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:45 am

I’ve seen this problem as well, but only at work.  I use Firefox a lot more at home and have never seen the same problem.  Maybe it’s a machine-specific issue?  There’s not much difference between my work computer and my home computer, though.Give the Mozilla guys (and community) a break, though.  This bug is obviously very, very hard to reproduce, and therefore very, very hard to fix.  Plus, I can guarantee that bugs that occur for only 1-5% of the user base (if that) are going to fall to the wayside a lot faster than those that occur for much larger numbers.Hopefully we’ll see a fix at some point, though, because as you’ve pointed out, it sure is annoying when it happens.

  26. 26 JoeSnow Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:46 am

I’d say ….see if u can discover any form of similarity between your system specs, and others who’ve had this problem.  Things like this happen all the time with drivers for misc items like Gamepads and webcams….where certain chipsets, or even certain versions of chipsets on motherboards had issues…when nobody else is able to reproduce it.  May not be the issue, but, then again it may.I’ve also used firefox for awhile now on both windows and linux with few issues.  I have experienced what you speak of in terms of it not copying and in fact dumping my clipboard alltogether… but, not on my system, and it never became a real issue as in your case.   yet, I work on many many systems, and mine is formatted and reinstalled probably 4-5 times a year because i’m always learning/changing/experimenting ;-p

  27. 27 MerleOne Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:50 am

Actually it also happened to me on several occasion. Sometimes, the following workaround allows me to overcome this : I simply copy, copy and copy again until the clipboard finally fills up.

I think this may have to do with another application running that would block access to the clipboard, since I have on or two other applications that have also a problem filling the clipboard, but this time with an explicit error message.

    Hope this can be solved.

    .merle1.

  28. 28 morganix Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:50 am

I don’t believe this is a bug with firefox, I think it has to do with Word. Word has it’s own clipboard, and lots of times you cannot paste anything into word, unless it was open you performed the copy/paste. Try it next time and tell me what happens.-morganix

  29. 29 Aaron Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:51 am

Glad I’m not the only one. Thought it was just something with my machine or some other apps I might have been running. But this happenes to me too…

  30. 30 xen ix Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:51 am

PEBCAK? :DI’ve been using Firefox since it first released and never have encountered this bug. So, maybe you should go out on a limb and test a final release. Just to be a bit daring. :)But, I think the worst bug in Firefox, that is why I’m using Camino now, is the horrible memory leakage. When having two tabs open, when viewing very simple web sites, Firefox shouldn’t be using almost 400MB of RAM.

  31. 31 user Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:52 am

at least now I know Im not the only one who’s been having that problem

  32. 32 xen ix Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:54 am

I can also add that Firefox has been more buggy when I’ve been using it in Windows then in any other OS.

  33. 33 Maxpower57 Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:54 am

i’ve never had this problem, nor have i ever heard of someone having the problem before.i’ve used every version of firefox and never come across something like thisit must be your computer/OS

  34. 34 LD Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:55 am

I have experienced this bug, on every install of firefox I have had, on over 14 different systems.

  35. 35 slaz Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:55 am

It happens to me too but on minor occations only, since I have a slow PC and usually quite a few tabs open, I usually think its FF not able to handle all the requests at once — webpage scripts, loading pages that kind of thing (I’m just guesing.)

  36. 36 McLaugh Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:57 am

I have been using Mozilla Firefox for about a year and a half now and I haven’t experienced anything like that.

“That bug report alone had over 60 comments and complaints, coming in steady for four years!”

Well, in my opinion, 60 comments/complaints spread over 4 years isn’t a lot. It could be an internal issue with few computers that interfere with firefox. I bet if you use a different PC to install it on, it will work.

  37. 37 no one in particular Mar 13th, 2006 at 7:59 am

it must be just you. I’ve been using firefox for years now and I’ve never experienced this problem.

  38. 38 Agent M Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:01 am

Been using Firefox since its launch and have never had this issue, nor have I seen this issue on any other computer.

  39. 39 Andy Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:04 am

I’ve seen the same problem here, both on Windows and OS X.On Windows I’ve also had similar problems with Cut/Paste in the Eclipse IDE too, but I don’t know if this is related or not.

  40. 40 Daniel Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:06 am

hmm.. every once in awhile i select text and copy in ff.. and then when i paste, it pastes whatever was in the cache before copying from ff, meaning it didnt copy from ff.. but i dont think it ever deleted the cache like your complaining of..and besides, this doesn’t happen frequently and when it does happen, i’ve always been convinced that it was my fault, believing that i didnt have the ff window in focus when attempting a copy (ctrl-C), but there’s a chance that it was actually a ff bug..but no, i’ve never needed to reinstall ff, and have had no significant problem with it. it does however freeze up and crash spontaneously sometimes.. but that is most likely do to a rouge extension (session saver?) and the #1 culprit: windows media player plugin. i would give anything to fix the problem with windows media player, but that problem isnt ff-specific, i have the same problem with any browser that uses the plugin.in the end, ff is the one browser i couldn’t live without. i love it.

  41. 41 John Bokma Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:08 am

Funny, I have experienced this problem as well, and from top of my head it was "worse" in older versions of Firefox (around 1.0), and it happens less to me 1.5.0.1.
And indeed, with Firefox 1.5.0.1 I get "Error: please type a comment."…

  42. 42 Plezops Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:08 am

I have been using FF for 2 or 3 years on multiple comps, all types of linux builds and windows builds and never ever had a problem like this… maybe you should reformat your computer and just download the stable builds and nothing else.

  43. 43 brickbat Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:09 am

I have this problem too.  It is a pain in the ass.  It isn’t consistent either.

  44. 44 Spec8472 Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:10 am

Copy/Paste can be simple, or it can get more complex, under windows atleast. Depending on how Firefox handles the copy/paste, it can copy objects (images, for example), rich text, plain text, etc.  When it closes, Firefox may choose to remove the objects it’s set in the clipboard. For example - it’s possible to copy an image from IE into Word, or a range of cells from an excel document into a word document. In either case - the application can choose to clean the clipboard of the object it has set there, some applications do this automaticly when they close. Check out the Clipboard reference on MSDN for some info on how clipboard works in Windows (should be almost identical from Win 3.x through to Vista)  MSDN Page PS: Using Firefox 1.5.0.1 I can’t post using using your blog commenting system, same as the comment from someone else above.

  45. 45 Kris Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:11 am

In the SkyOS port of Firefox, this bug is a big issue and it happens to almost everyone who has used Firefox on SkyOS. I believe the OS developer is working on a way around it but that’s only gonna work with SkyOS.

  46. 46 Ludde Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:20 am

I have this problem too, on Windows XP. It also happens when you copy from the Address field. It’s really annoying.Reselecting the text and selecting Copy again usually works after a few times.

  47. 47 Xdrive Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:22 am

Simple solution, don’t close Firefox before trying to paste.

  48. 48 Edwinder Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:24 am

My Cut and Paste dont work either. I thought it was just something to do with my system!

  49. 49 Bobby Elliott Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:31 am

Yes. It happens to me too. But infrequently. Very frustrating when it does. I agree that such a fundamental error should have been resolved a long time ago.

  50. 50 jkdas Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:32 am

It happened to me more than once! Never thought  of it as a bug ! The bug still exists with 1.5.0.1 too

  51. 51 Josh Chaney Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:33 am

Happens to me too.. I thought I was crazy, or had some oddball problem. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it doesn’t anymore.. or I have to explicitly use the right-click paste method.. A CTRL-V, or SHIFT-INSERT does not work. Also related - Sometimes I am unable to highlight and right-click “Copy” text on a webpage.. The “copy” button does not show up in the right-click menu.

  52. 52 bobbybrown Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:36 am

I’ve seen that problem show up before on a few computers (permanently) and I’ve had it happen intermittently on my work machine. I’ve been running firefox at home for a long time now and ive never seen it happen on any of my home machines… Strange bug, but yeah, thats been bothering me on and off for years…

  53. 53 Terry Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:38 am

This has happened to me many times in the past although it hasn’t happen whilst I have been 1.5 … maybe an extension causing it?

  54. 54 Mohammed Muchhala Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:44 am

I have noticed this bug in Ubuntu, but in Windws never came across it. OR maybe its for the reason that i use Opera 9 (weekly builds in Windows ) and FF in Ubuntu.

Just hope this is a good wake up call for FF team and sorts it out.

  55. 55 A Guy Called Gerald Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:44 am

I don’t such bug on a Mac too.

  56. 56 Mike Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:45 am

I have been using Firefox for almost a year now both at work and at home and I’ve never had this happening to me -at least not from what I can remember. Not being able to copy something does ring a bell…….. so I guess I’ll keep my eyes open.

  57. 57 Michael Burns Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:45 am

I have never had this problem on any computer I have ever installed it on.

  58. 58 adaml Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:49 am

Yeah I’ve seen this bug on windows quite frequently, it just stops loading the clipboard..completely frustrating as it is the only application I’ve ever seen this behaviour from. Sometimes switching tabs "reactivates" the clipboard. I’ve never seen this with my linux box but I’ve been using galeon for years until quite recently.

  59. 59 Bitcloud Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:52 am

I’m with ya fella… I’ve had the same experiences copy and pasting… I thought it might have been photoshop, but now testing it I realise its been firefox all along!

  60. 60 Sketch Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:54 am

I don’t want this to sound like I’m some random Firefox fanatic and I’m trying to shift the blame here but Ive noticed this behavior on my PCs too.  However, it only happens with Microsoft Office programs like Word.  Almost as if Word is clearing the clipboard when it launches.  Could this (at least partially) be the cause of the issue you’ve been having?

  61. 61 tulpe Mar 13th, 2006 at 8:57 am

You don’t have a winXP remote desktop session open in the background? In this case i’m having the same problem.. everytime!

  62. 62 scHACK Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:01 am

This even exist on the Mac. Not to the point where you have to reinstall, but you do have to restart the application. Annoying!!!

  63. 63 Nick Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:02 am

I spend many hours each day in FF without this problem. I’ve had very little problems using this code base (even back when it was called Firebird/Phoenix). It must be a rare conflict with your setup.

  64. 64 Pete Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:02 am

I’ve never run a nightly, and I have seen this bug on Linux and Windows too.

In my experience, if I find that the copy failed (these days, I daren’t close Firefox until I’m certain that the copy-paste has gone through okay) I’ll go back to the Firefox window and choose “Copy” from the context menu instead - that usually works fine.

One observation though - I don’t find that the clipboard is empty, I just find that it still contains whatever was on there before. I think that for some reason the Ctrl-V action is just not getting interpreted - perhaps it’s a focus issue, or some other event handler stealing the message?

  65. 65 -XL_GURU- Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:07 am

    extension: autocopyget it.yeah rly!

  66. 66 Nikhil Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:08 am

Wierd problem but I have been using firefox for a long time in both windows and linux and something like this has never happened. Why do you use a nightly when you are not a developer or tester. Use the latest stable

  67. 67 Ralphy Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:10 am

I have been using Firefox for about 3 years now and I never had that problem. So what you need to do is write an article on how your computer sucks and not Firefox.

  68. 68 Stan Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:11 am

I thought it was just my PC - I can work around the problem by copying and pasting from Firefox to notepad then copy and paste from notepad to firefox.  As long as I use notepad in the middle it seems to be ok.

  69. 69 Andrew Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:15 am

What programming experience do you have? Cut and paste is usually an OS level "API," not an application level thing.

  70. 70 Hemo Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:16 am

From time to time, this is a problem on my computers. If I copy many times, it does get pasted at last. Some times I hold Ctrl C for a long time, repeating the copy command. In the end the text is copied to my clip board.

It is very anoying, and the problem only occours in Firefox. It is a problem to copy things from web pages, adress bar and even the search box in the top right corner.

PS! I was not able to comment you’re blog, using Firefox or ie6.

  71. 71 harrinp1 Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:20 am

I’ve seen this problem on my desktop PC, firefox on several other machines works fine.  Did a complete reinstall the other day which fixed it for a while but it has now stopped working again.  No idea what causes it!

  72. 72 aha Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:24 am

aah at last: firefox is the guilty app! (and i thought it was windows) i experience the same behaviour now and then, mostly when there is a link on a page without the <a href> and i copy and paste it in a new tab (yes i know, there is an extension for autolinking) or when i copy an adress for use in IE. and i use official releases only. nice (at least in some way) to hear that other users experience the same.

  73. 73 Anonymous Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:28 am

I think the problem is at your end — if you want to copy something, please do it when the program is still running. why close firefox immediately after copying without pasting them first? The thins is, for portability, firefox implements a cut and paste routine that is universal, which, unfortunately, will mean it does not integrate well with whatever OS you use.And for goodness sake, PLEASE account for lagging in your computer. If you want a keypress to work instantaniously, I’m sorry to say that RT computers do not exist yet in hardware. Sometimes, when load is high, you can have a computer go so slow that some operations fail to take place, and this problem plagues windows/linux/os x for all I know.I hope I’ve answered your question.

  74. 74 Opiniastrous Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:28 am

I have had the same problem as you, sometimes finding that when I go to paste a copied item, it just wasn’t copied. Fortunately, it’s not too hard to fix for me - I often use multiple windows (which can be, when I’m into some serious surfing, upwards of 30,35.. windows - I love FF’s tabs, they just keep the Windows taskbar so clear!), so I just flick back to the webpage, recopy, and flick back to wherever I wanted to paste the item.

I’ve never really even thought about the problem as a result, but yeah, you’re right; somewhere deep down in that FF code, there’s a bug, and it won’t leave till someone does something about it.

  75. 75 NC Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:30 am

I’ve been using firefox from 1.0.5 to 1.5 with 10 extension installed and I never have the copy and paste problem.  can it be something screwed from installing IE7?  have you tried uninstalling IE 7?

  76. 76 Tim Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:32 am

There just aren’t enough people experiencing it to make it a priority, I’m guessing. As a developer, I can tell you that bugs are never fixed in the order they are submitted, and I’m not surprised this one has been basically ignored since I’ve never heard of it. Maybe you should grab the code and investigate it on your own. This is the kind of thing that’s extremely difficult to fix without being able to reproduce it, so it might actually be easy to see what the problem is once it’s broken on your machine.

Also, have you tried copying your entire FF profile to another machine once it’s broken? If that causes the problem to migrate as well, a copy of that profile might help a great deal in tracking it down. I might even give it look myself.

  77. 77 a Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:33 am

I actually switched from Mozilla to Firefox because the version of Mozilla I was on at the time had a copy and paste bug where neither worked after you first started Mozilla.  Once you got something in your clipboard from elsewhere while Mozilla was running, however, then it was OK.  I have noticed the Firefox bug as well, but it shows up a lot less often.  Tempted to switch to Opera next…

  78. 78 paul Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:37 am

yea ive noticed this problem on some older machines but has never actually happened to my own. specifcally, it happened to my old roomate repeatedly. his computer is about 6 or 7 years old. i was never able to give the problem proper diagnosis but funny, i wouldve never guessed firefox was the cause.

  79. 79 Anon Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:37 am

Please don’t argue for the bug to be fixed due to its age. There are lots of old bugs that are difficult to fix. The things that help a bug to be fixed quickly are (in no particular order):It can be reproduced every time by following a consistent series of steps and these steps can be followed by a developer and also reproduce the bug for them.It causes devestating damage (e.g. browser crashes) leaving a stack trace that can be given to a developer. It has security implications. There is a patch attached fixing the bug that doesn’t cause side effects.Bugs that are highly interimitant and seemingly don’t have a consitent pattern often go unfixed. I’ve suffered the problem you are complaining about but I have never found a pattern for when it happens AND it happens so rarely I am not willing to put any effort into trying to debug it.Please don’t start a campaign on bugzilla bugs in this fashion - it doesn’t help get the bug fixed it only generates a lot of friction. If you can find the exact steps that anybody can do that cause this to happen every time then that will help far far more.

  80. 80 Anon Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:40 am

Hmm I needed to post that comment twice (firefox 1.5) in order to get it to be sent and the line breaking I had in it appears to have gone awry. Sorry about that.

  81. 81 Rrh Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:41 am

This could be caused by some other application that runs at the same time and locks the clipboard but fails to release it. I can at least imagine how such situation can be created using Windows API. I dont know how this works on Linux though.

  82. 82 Ben Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:41 am

I have been running firefox for about a year and have had no problem like this ever, and never heard of it either

  83. 83 vasra Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:42 am

Had this happen to me on Mac OS X several too times.Too many to count.pre 1.0 branch1.0 branch1.5 branchI don’t know what causes it, but it sure is maddening.I’m not sure if I’ve ever had it happen to me on Windows, but at least not for a while (although I change builds every other week, which may affect the occurence as well).

  84. 84 the_angry_angel Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:44 am

If you’re using Remote Desktop (RDP), on either Windows or Linux, you will find that copy paste breaks a lot - especially on windows. This is a known windows bug. With regards to Linux the default behaviour, when using X, is that the X server only requests the selected data when its pasted because of its content negotiation schema. This means that if you copy something, close Firefox and then try and paste, it won’t work. These could be the cause of your phantom bug.

  85. 85 Johan Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:44 am

Take a look at Thunderbird and it’s never arriving integration with address book in OS X.. Hundreds of dollars of bounties has been made and still no progress. :(

  86. 86 Rather not say Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:45 am

Thanks for bringing this up. I’ve had the exact same problem on every single version of FF i’ve installed. –Name withheld in case of fanboy lynchmob.

  87. 87 Matthew Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:45 am

Thank you! I’m not the only one with this problem that crops up every so often. I have yet to find out what triggers this to happen with copy and paste in FF. It is annoying though, espically when you accidentally copy and paste a huge block of text that you had in clipboard instead of that URL you copied from another website in FF!Windows XP SP2 with nothing out of the ordinary and not a noob when it comes to such things.

  88. 88 Drood Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:46 am

It’s definitely not your imagination. I’d never seen it until six months ago, now it does it on two different computers.

  89. 89 :-P Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:46 am

It isn’t really a bug, its an outdated bugzilla entry.

  90. 90 David Bond Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:54 am

Yup - this one’s a killer.  Has had me SEVERAL times.  Incidentally, what plugins do you have running?  It all started for me when I discovered plugins, customisation etc.  My list:- DOM inspector- Talkback- Forecastfox- Auto Copy (ahhh… Old version 0.6.2… This one perhaps?)- Adblock- Tabbrowser preferences- Customize Google- Fasterfox- IETab- Adblock FiltersetG updater- Colorful tabs- Viamatic foxpose- Searchstatus- Greasemonkey- Tab mix plus

  91. 91 Nigel Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:59 am

PS. I would have claimed this issue but in reverse. I have lots of problems coping from IE. not firefox.

  92. 92 Joker3001 Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:59 am

I think this bug mainly occurs when you leave some text selected in a tab in firefox somewhere. If you deselect the text then copy and paste will work as expected. I thought it was down to eclipse but its definately a problem with firefox which is why i switched to opera!!

  93. 93 Paul Mar 13th, 2006 at 9:59 am

I’ve seen this in Mozilla suite but it was related to the web page content. It could take several tries till I select a small enough section that Mozilla would correctly select and save to the clipbpard.

  94. 94 Max Mar 13th, 2006 at 10:19 am

I get the same issue from time to time - it straight up forgets how to copy & paste. And then there’s the one when whenever you type ‘ in an input box it goes straight to the find bar…..

  95. 95 Sorin Mar 13th, 2006 at 10:20 am

That is happening for me as well, on the latest stable release. So I guess the bug is still there.

  96. 96 Tom Mar 13th, 2006 at 10:29 am

I’ve had the same problem with Firefox installations on 2 out of my 3 computers.  It’s not a big deal, but can be very irritating, and is the sort of basic issue you’d think would be worth sorting.

  97. 97 Ludde Mar 13th, 2006 at 10:33 am

I can reproduce the bug with these steps:Open up a new firefox process.Go to http://digg.comSelect "create a small home". Ctrl-CGo to Address field (eveything should get selected)Hit Ctrl-V, it pastesHit Ctrl-Z. Undo.Hit Ctrl-A. Select allHit Ctrl-C, nothing gets copiedHit Ctrl-V, nothing gets insertedHit Ctrl-V, nothing gets inserted againRelease Ctrl between every press.

  98. 98 Conando Mar 13th, 2006 at 10:43 am

I know exactly what you’re talking about! This bug is bugging me since I installed FF and I know from at least two friends who have the same problem now and then. Sometimes it works flawless and - especially when you don’t expect it of course - it fails. Some sort of "workaround" I use for now is to use "Cut" instead of "Copy" in the location edit box immediately followed by a "Paste" to see if it was successful - if not I’ll press "Ctrl Z" (on Windows this is) for undoing the cut and repeat the whole procedure. At worst it works on the 3rd round! :DOr I’ll simply do a "Copy" at least three times in a row - especially when I have selected some text in a page. (so basically pressing "Ctrl-C" for a few seconds to be sure ;o)Nevertheless this bug is of such a kind that it really is driving me crazy and gives me the creeps from time to time!!!
This is on FF 1.5 (and now 1.5.0.1) under WinXP - even after a clean install without any other weird apps/drivers running and it also happens on my Sony Vaio which has totally different hardware and on my other desktop with again totally different hardware and some more apps running in the background. Sometimes the clipboard is emptied (as described in this blog) and sometimes it simply still contains the data it had previously.

  99. 99 OropheR Mar 13th, 2006 at 11:07 am

Its not a problem with firefox itself. It affects firefox. This type of issue is hard indeed to reproduce. I had the same one with internet explorer. I could not copy-paste an info from my desktop to a database running in internet explorer that i could access via remote connection. Sometimes it was working, sometimes not. I had to close my remote access, copy, then reopen my access and paste. it was the only work around I came with. I only was affected by this issue.

  100. 100 Jasson Mar 13th, 2006 at 11:24 am

hey ive had this problem. it comes up ocassionallyi thought it must be something wrong with the OS.god, so it is a firefox bug

  101. 101 ajs Mar 13th, 2006 at 11:32 am

Drag over text to copy with left button. Leave it highlit.
    Go to another screen.
Place cursor over window where you want pasted text to appear.
    Click middle button.

This works in *all* GUI applications.

  102. 102 Trejkaz Mar 13th, 2006 at 11:41 am

This bug is nothing compared to the issue on my work computer, where Firefox can’t use Ctrl-F to find text.

  103. 103 Computer Guru Mar 13th, 2006 at 11:46 am

Finally got rid of AJAX commenting.. WAY too bugy on IE7 an FF unstables

  104. 104 FrdPrefct Mar 13th, 2006 at 11:51 am

Can’t say I have this problem at all.  Both Windows (ewww) and Linux environment.  If that were the case, I’d be reloading or frustrated at almost ever computer I’ve worked on.  Havn’t seen the problem at all.

  105. 105 Jeroen Mar 13th, 2006 at 12:01 pm

I’ve seen this happen a lot when there is a Remote Desktop window open, but I blame Remote Desktop/Windows for that. Especially since I see the same happen sometimes in other programs when there is a Remote Desktop window open. It could also be that copy/paste is implemented in a quirky way in windows, it would not surprise me.

  106. 106 _Belial Mar 31st, 2006 at 5:10 pm

I’m with you on this one, had the bug for about 6 months now, driving me mad and indeed driving me to opera :((

  107. 107 City Jim 3000 Apr 3rd, 2006 at 10:22 am

OH MY I have this bug too, on every computer I own (work, home, laptop). Must be some application I always install that doesn’t work well with Firefox. It even affects copy-paste in other applications, for example, when I get the bug in Firefox, sometimes my text-editor (Ultraedit) craps out too, making copy-paste "local" so I cant copy stuff out of the editor or into the editor.

  108. 108 James Smith Apr 4th, 2006 at 9:08 pm

For the past 3 months I’ve been going mad about this, it is very frustrating and occurs on both my laptop and office PC. My colleagues also suffer from the same problem, on a total of 10 separate systems.

  109. 109 John Fischer Apr 6th, 2006 at 2:24 pm

This happens to me ALL the time in FireFox.  It’s the one thing that pisses me off to no end about Firefox.  Try to copy a URL and paste it into an e-mail, and NOTHING HAPPENS.  This has happened in every build I’ve ever used, and I typically only install the release builds.   I can’t believe I have to go to IE, do the same Google search, then copy the URL to paste into an e-mail.   Come on, 4 years and this simple yet incredibly annoying bug still isn’t fixed?

  110. 110 Lee Orref Apr 7th, 2006 at 8:10 pm

All the people saying "it has never happened to me" are lucky.  I run 1.5.0.1 at home and at work (different hardware but both are versions of XP), and it happens to me in both places.  I can usually copy if I right-click and choose copy from the mouse, although sometimes I have to do it several times to for it to work.  CTRL-C almost never works.  What’s even more frustrating is CTRL-X does delete the text, but does not actually copy it to the clipboard.  I’ve used Firefox/Mozilla since early days, but I have to say, this is close to driving back to IE.  The copy failure occurs whether I’m copying text within the browser or the URL.

  111. 111 Eric S Apr 11th, 2006 at 4:15 am

Yep, it has happened on EVERY install I have ever had of firefox. It certainly not a "non-reproducable" bug. In fact, it just happened again about 2 minutes, which prompted me to search for a solution. Hence I am commenting on this website. Why won’t it just work already!

  112. 112 Cafeine Apr 12th, 2006 at 1:02 pm

Got it too (XP, latest official build), drives me crazy too. :(

  113. 113 SM Apr 13th, 2006 at 1:29 pm

    happens to me constantly

  114. 114 Scotty B Apr 14th, 2006 at 10:46 pm

I get this all the time.. drives me crazy.  One thing I have found to help is either by closing 1-2 tabs or even opening up 1-2 new tabs, it will start to work again. I do have a RDP window open on my computer the whole time at work, that might have something to do with it. The copy to notepad then back into Firefox works as well for me.

  115. 115 Scotty B Apr 14th, 2006 at 11:49 pm

just an update.. had the cut and paste thing happen right now, I closed RDP and I was able to cut and paste again with no problem. Opened RDP back up and it was still working. Looks like after some time RDP will cause the issue.

  116. 116 Mark Alexander Apr 17th, 2006 at 7:21 am

Cut and paste just stopped working for me in FF 1.5.0.1, I did the following; Upgraded to 1.5.0.2 Edited my user.js file etc Deactivated smart clipboard in MS word. Reinstalled FF Rebooted computer Installed AllowClipboard Helper Restarted FF in safe mode. NOTHING WORKED .. use right click menu copy, use main menu copy, use ctr-C, ctr-X ABSOLUTELY NOTHING I TRY WILL GET FF TO COPY TO THE CLIPBOARD !

  117. 117 Pete Cobbe Apr 18th, 2006 at 4:21 pm

I suffer with this cut paste problem. i don’t know if it is coincidence or not but i am also not able to customise my tool bar. I wanted to see if using the cut paste buttons on the tool bar helped but found i could not drag the buttons to the tool bar! has anybody else noticed this problem?? Pete

  121. 121 caribMan Jun 10th, 2006 at 12:01 am

Have the same cut and paste problem even after upgrading to 1.5.0.4 under XP Pro. Very annoying and might make me switch to another browser …

  122. 122 Don Lee Aug 7th, 2006 at 5:26 am

obviously, if you haven’t seen the bug, then it can’t exist.

    that’s American logic.

I just had it happen to me and it’s extremely frustrating because it renders the form and web accessability completely useless for several hours. It seems to work days later sometimes, and is DAMN HARD to reproduce at times. I’ve seen others reproduce it and I know it can be.

This one I was on collarme.com and it refused to allow me to paste into a form box, just 20 minutes ago.

Anyone wants to come sit here by my keyboard and watch me try to reproduce it is welcome, but if any developers need me to do screenshots or whatnot, I can do that.

It’s just I know that not one of them will ask me. They haven’t even worked on the problem.

  123. 123 Student Organizations Aug 19th, 2006 at 11:22 pm

I had to completely uninstall FF and delete my extensions folder, then reinstall before it went away. FYI

  124. 124 Thomas Sep 14th, 2006 at 4:22 pm

This bug has NOT BEEN FIXED.

I don’t have pushow, and the new Firefox doesn’t fix the problem.

For me, cut/paste seldom works via ctrl-c/ctrl-v, but does work if you use the menu EDIT selections for Cut and Paste.

I get hit with this bug every day, and I’m really getting sick of it.

  125. 125 annie Sep 17th, 2006 at 6:53 pm

I also have this problem. I don’t want to get rid of FF, but if no solution is found, that may be my only recourse. :-(
