New Windows Vista Build 5308.60 Released!

It is Build 5308! No, not the same 5308 that was released last week, a different 5308! The build released last week was 5308.17; where .17 means recompile number 17. On February 28th, 2006, a new build was released, just days after the first. This build, 5308.60, is the 60th recompile, and purportedly more stable, less troublesome, smoother, faster, and without the memory leaks. Though the reports of its stability and near perfection may have been exaggerated, NeoSmart Technologies has obtained proof of it’s release.

UPDATE:
As far as we can tell, the changes have been made to the server OS. Apparently 5308.17 server edition had many issues, and so MS recompiled and re-released it. However, in doing so they also recompiled the core kernel, meaning that the Vista Client was also updated at its heart…

At the moment it is only availabe to Connect Tech Beta testers, and is about the same size as the original 5308 release. However, 5308.60 is an “unstaged” build, which refers to the type of setup system used to get the build installed. 5270, for example, was an unstaged build, while 5308.17 (the one released last week) was a staged build.

The difference in install time was incredible, but not all of it is due to the staging. In fact, we can gaurantee that it will take far less time to install 5308.60 than it took for 5270 to install, and only slightly more time than 5308.17; where “slightly” ranges anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes.

5308.60 ISO Details:
Name: FebCTP_5308.60_32bit_Main_Unstaged_DVD_EN.iso
Description: This image includes both Windows Vista and Longhorn Server. It is an unstaged package.
Size: 2,256.74 MB

Download Link: Microsoft Connect

There is also a 64-bit edition up for download. The Longhorn Server Core is availabse in 5308.60 in under 700 MB for those who are only interested in the core & kernel.

Proof of Purchase ;)

    1. Awesome!

Though, download link doesnt work .. you need to be in the MSDN to download Vista from there. Oh well, still pretty cool.

    2. From the MS Beta Boards –

I know that this is confusing, so I wanted to post something to try and clear things up.

The only changes in the build “5308.60” are for server. For client it is exactly the same as “5308.17”.

It has zero effect on client, but won’t hurt anything if you use those ISO images to install client.

So unless you are testing server, you can just save your bandwidth.

    3. I got this from a friend… It’s from the private news group by a Microsoft employee…

    7. I just installed the Vista 5308.60 build on my Acer Aspire 5002 NB and my work desktop for testing. It’s definatly a fun build to play around with although usability is down because everything is linked in a round about way and of course just because it’s different.

-The Aspire has a Broadcom wireless adapter and I couldn’t get it to work at first. I had to go into device manager, enable it and disable it and then the tray icon came on.

-I also noticed that sometimes when glass is enabled that tooltips go under the window but you can see the “blurred version”. This happens with the start menu mostly.

-When you hover over a program button in the taskbar it will show you a preview, sometimes the preview doens’t go away.

-I checked the side memory usage of the sidebar at onepoint and it was using 283mb of memory.

Those are just some beta issues that I see after a few hours of use.

What do you like or dislike about the new builds so far?

    8. Were you referencing the Windows Vista Beta or your Blog?

If you were speaking of Vista then, as far as I am reading that license, you could share the Beta.

The key, of course, is always a bone of contention. I have no idea how Microsoft licenses (or bundles) such items.

    9. I’ve been itching to try vista for a while, But Can’t get either of them to work. I’ve tried 5270 and 5308. They wont install properly, Gives a bsod and reeboots before I can read it. I have a fairly decent computer too (p4 3ghz/512ddr/x700 256)

Dammit microsoft, I wanna help and buy vista but its hard when neither of the beta’s work.

Does anyone know if theres gonna be a march beta?

      -Darrel.

    10. Hi Joe!
This build has several nasty memory leaks, but they come and go…
I have bugged the blurred tooltips: though technically not a ‘fix’ persay, disable autohide and they will appear properly.
To get rid of a “sticky” preview, simply hover once more on any program in the taskbar 🙂

I personally think it is coming along great, definitely much improved over beta 1, and far better than 5270 even.

    11. lol@Ken… I know we all wish MS would release Vista as creative commons… but somehow I don’t think they would see the humor in me giving you a DVD-Key (yeah guys, get used to it, nothing fits on a CD anymore, only DVDs!)

@Darrel: Nope, definitely no March CTP (unless it is a leak!!!); but expect a final beta 2 build in the first half of April.
