Download: Windows Vista x64 Recovery Disc

Ever since we first made available the Windows Vista Recovery Disc for download back in January, we’ve been inundated with requests for an x64-compatible version. Flash-forward to three months later, and it’s finally here!

If you don’t already know what the Windows Vista Recovery Disc is and what’s used for, take a quick look at the original article – good luck catching up on the half-a-thousand comments there!

Note that this download is no longer free, due to licensing restrictions imposed upon us.

What it does: The Windows Vista Recovery Disc can be used to access a system recovery menu, giving you options of using an antivirus program, System Restore, Complete PC Backup, automated system repair, and a command-line prompt for manual advanced recovery.

What it doesn’t do: You cannot use the Windows Vista Recovery Disc to re-install Windows – it only fixes (not replaces!) Windows.

Why you need it: If you bought your PC from a major retailer, you didn’t get this CD with your hefty purchase.

Instructions

Click the link above then select the edition you’d like to download.
Select a payment method and enter details.
Download the link displayed onscreen and sent to your email.
Burn the .iso file that was downloaded to a CD using these instructions.
When you want to use the recovery center, put the CD in your drive and boot from it. This is usually done by pressing F8 at startup, or changing the boot drive order in the BIOS.

@JB. Install.wim is for the Windows installation. There isn’t an “issue” here, you just need to click the repair option instead of install. Asking for install.wim is essentially asking for a full-fledged installation CD, which obviously can’t be freely distributed.

Thanks! By the same token I used the same file to install onto another CD and get an error message saying that it is missing a file, something .wim I think. It is of no consequence as I will just assume that I didn’t do this one correctly and do it again. As a side note I saw some posts about The Geeks charging for a recovery disk. FYI HP charges $8 US for recovery disks. Not a bad investment. Thanks again!

Don’t click “Install Now,” press “Repair my PC” in the bottom-left corner of the same dialog.

Hello again and thanks for the input. And by this time I have resolved my problem. I used the download a second time and it worked. I had tried using a Lenova Vista disk but my friends Toshiba would not see it as such but when I put it into an HP or back into the Lenova machine it was recognized. That is the reason I used the ISO method. In any case, I appreciate all the help. Your doing a great job with this site in helping those of us who don’t have access to other information.

I have three items at the root level of the disk I created:

boot (folder — contains 3.27M total)
sources (folder — 144 MB total)
bootmgr (file, appears to have no type, 325 KB)

This is what I got using the download link for the 64-bit version of Vista, and I am running Vista Home Premium.

After changing the boot order, nothing different happens when I start the computer.

I get a screen that says “Press any key to boot from CD”, so I do.

From there I get a blue screen saying “Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer”, etc. Any tips as to where I go from here?

Following the Vista Security 2011 fake antivirus program (this people could probably cure cancer if they would devote their time to good)…not sure if it was the program or me cleaning up something I shouldn’t have. Anyway below is what I did so far:

Downloaded Vista torrent file and uTorrent app as suggested
Used uTorrent app to download ISO file
Downloaded ImgBurn app to burn ISO file to DVD
Hit F8 when starting computer to get list, chose to boot from DVD
It started the “Install” process, I hit an option to Repair instead
It gave me a message that it found errors on startup settings and did I want to repair, I did of course and rebooted.
Computer came up fine
Still could not see any files/folders or programs. Went to my user folder, clicked Organize, Folder and Search Options, View tab, Selected “Show hidden files and folders”

My folders are transparent right now but I’m alot farther than I was! Will work on that next. Thanks neosmart for your help! Much appreciation!

The only thing is that in order to get your 25 character key so that you can confirm this that you have the operating system. Don’t you have to right click on “My Computer” and go to that key that is on the bottom? If you can get back to me that would be great thanks!

As I understand the Recovery Disk it assumes you are recovering an already installed version if Windows. This being the case the key the recovery program is asking for is the one that came with the original installation set or on the label pasted somewhere on your machine.

I tried the steps above. I made an ISO image on a CD, and changed my PC to boot from CD, and when it reads the CD, the error recovery gives me the options to boot int o one of the 3 safe modes, or start windows normally. Either option takes me back to “Configuring Updates: Stage 3 of 3 – 0% COmplete”. Can you tell me either what I did wrong or any further suggestions to try? I have an ACER laptop. Thanks in advance.

I think you can find your system information on an HP by pressing the F10 key on startup which takes you to the resident setup utility. On this screen I think there is an option to view the System Information which should answer your question. Good luck. If it works that’s good. If it doesn’t work blame Yahooti.

Thanks for the additional information. Check your computer properties to make sure of what you have. (start right click My Computer and in the lower right hand section you will see the information you need. It might say Sempron 32 or Sempron x86-64. I have looked around and it seems there are two versions of the Sempron 3600+. I believe all Sempron Socket A/462 CPUs are 32-bit CPUs while the Socket 754 Sempron is a 64bit device. So if your My Computer Properties says Sempron x86-64 or just Sempron 64 you can use Vista 64. The x86 portion just means it will run in 32bit mode automatically when needed. The information in the Properties tab above will specifiy exactly what is installed.

I have found a partial solution. I went to HP?s website and found that Recovery Console Command Prompt commands are available in Vista.
I booted from the Vista dvd, system repair, command prompt, and ran the following:
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /fixmbr

Update #2:
For some reason, when the Welcome screen fades to the black desktop it reminded me of the secure desktop screen for UAC, hmmmm…..
Just for the heck of it I disabled UAC from Safe Mode, rebooted, and viola, Vista booted right up to my desktop. Can’t wait to see what happens when I turn it back on tomorrow.
Obviously this Vist installation has some corruption somewhere, for now if everything remains ok I guess I’ll just let my niece take it back to school and hope for the best.

Seagate’s Firmware Updater for Sata drives, left a “Present” in my OS…
I boot off 15K SCSI, and the Seagate firmware updater left code in my Physical boot drive Sector 0, which acts like this:

I boot up, and it reports: “Non-System Disk, hit any key to continue”… I hit any key, and it boots normally…. Every time….

Again, I boot off SCSI, not SATA… I eventually updated the Sata Firmware using the ISO disk, but this problem with booting still remains…

My Question: I have tried a Restore from Windows Vista Install Disk in REPAIR…
It can’t find the OS… There was a custom Floppy driver installed during initial OS install… I loaded the floppy driver, but it fails to find drive, I believe because of the “Hit any Key to continue” issue….

Now Windows DOES BOOT… I first prompts me to Hit Any Key to continue….

Does your drive support an Adaptec Embedded SCSI 7902B AIC controller ???

Looks nice just pity this program could also not help me to solve a problem
i have 1 or 2 bad sectors on a drive that contain vista.
I was not able to clone or repair the disk.
My 5 cents to make it a nice and round 9 usd

I downloaded it on 4 different CD roms because I wasnt sure what format I needed it in.
So then i put it in the computer and nothing happens…
I tried every one of the discs I burned…
Help me please… I just wanted to do a factory reset so I could give it away to a friend for school…
