What is a recovery and repair disk

Windows 7 LogoMajor PC manufacturers no longer give customers a real Windows 7 installation DVD along with their purchase of a computer.

A Windows 7 installation DVD can be used to recover your PC, not just install a Windows 7 copy. The DVD has a “recovery center” that gives you options to Automated Recovery (attempts to fix automatically any errors found), System Restore (restores your computer to the last working state) or you can access a command-line for advanced recovery options.

Instead, customers are expected to create a recovery media themselves – on a CD, DVD or USB drive.

Your computer’s hard drive might have a recovery partition added by the manufacturer, but what happens when your PC or Windows isn’t working or you’ve lost the disks you had?

If you can’t boot into Windows or your PC isn’t working, only a bootable recovery and repair CD/DVD/USB can save you.

    1. Thank you very much.. it saved me after hours of tinkering and a major headache.. =]

    2. Perfect info! Was getting that Error on Windows 7 Ultimate x32. Other sites info keeps pointing to things like CD/DVD problem, Windows file system, bad media, etc.
This .iso file creates a working disc. Haven’t had to use it but relief to have it.
Thanks so much. Hopefully other Win 7 people ende up here.

    3. Thanks for making this available; you just saved my hide by helping me fix my work laptop instead of going to my IT guy with my tail between my legs.

    4. I had to delete all partitions on my acer due to something nasty surviving all the system restores, some kind of malware. Anyway I used my friends win7 cd (same edition) and used my cd key on the bottom of the laptop. U know the story. Anyhow, would this help me?

    5. I use Mac but my fiancee uses Win 7.

I tried it for my fiancee’s system and it works just fine.

Thanks so much for your help here.

      Cheers!

    6. Hey if i put the windows recovery file on usb drive will they work to recover error problems such as boot mgr is compressed press cntrl+alt+del to restrart.

    7. yes u can put them on usb i have both, but u will need to learn to use grub4dos etc so check google.

    8. damn, yall need to seed you stupid motherfuckers. Other ppl cant download if you dont seed, SO STOP HITTING AND RUNNING STUPID FUX, U PISSIN ME OFF!!

    9. I have an Asus EB1501 that comes with DVD drive. Like most other manufacturers Asus doesn’t provide DVD medium of anything, and all is in the ‘Recovery’ hidden partition. However, they do not provide a facility to create your own Windows 7 DVD and back-ups of other stuff (there’s also a hidden ‘booster’ partition).

How do I create a full DVD back-up of Windows 7 etc from this Recovery partition, please, not just the Recovety disk? HP and others nag you to create DVDs straight away, a few clicks and you have full back-up to DVDs.

Asus support says they do not and will not be providing said tool!

My concern is that out of warranty, and say I need to replace HDD, I do not have DVD to install from scratch, this is what I’m wanting to create.

      Thanks in advance

    10. i need help.. my windows 7 seems to have crashed, the desktop n start menu icons dont work.. its a new laptop n i jus didnt make my recovery disks.. 🙁 (my fault i know) .. can i still download ur program n burn it into a dvd n use it to repair my system? or shud i jus straight away go to d service centre?

    11. Hi 🙂

i’m trying to download the .torrent file. I can see lots of clients and seeds but it never download anything. Any clue? i’m using utorrent.

Thanks and keep up the good work!!

    12. Are these Windows 7 recovery discs backwards compatible to fix computers with Vista on (ie startup boot problems) too.

      Thank’s

    13. Thankyou So much!!!

I installed ubuntu on as a second OS and grub keeps getting messed up by win7. With this I can reinstall and use the Windows boot loader and fix other win7 issues!!

      Thanks!!

    14. took me about an hour, but that is because i set my max download speed to 60kb/s to make sure i dont take down the internet for everyone in the house. thanks for providing this, i was wondering what i am supposed to do if windows 7 screws up, as my laptop didn’t come with recovery discs. i have crappy dsl but its a wonder i have dsl at all, as far as i live from civilization. i can do maybe 160 kb down and not very much up. i get 1.4mbps down max, from the dsl modem but if i try to push a torrent very far over 160kb/s down i take down the internet for everyone. and i cant even do 10kb/s up safely.

    15. Wow, this tools will help us very much..
I have faced many problem like this before, most of my friends that they let me to repair ends with reinstallation, with this i now can try to repair it first with windows recovery..

      Thanks for the files.

    16. Well the disaster happened before I could burn a recovery disc. I can use my other PC to do this but how can I tell whether I have the 32bit or a 64bit version as I can’t boot up to access this via the start up menu?

    17. Hey, i have windows 7 and i want to switch to a 64bit so i can use more RAM, i know my computer is capable because it used to be 64bit until i had to system restore and it to 32bit is this or is it a version or does it just stay with what you have?

      thanks

    18. Several posters asked if the Win7 iso would work on Vista. I tried it on my Vista system and it correctly identified the OS and brought up the interface with the same repair tools that I saw on my Win 7 system.

I have not tried to do anything with it other than test to see if it booted from the CD but it appears to be OK on Vista.

Initially I had trouble downloading using torrent but it appears the wireless hotspot I was using blocks torrent. I tried another hotspot and it downloaded with no problem.

    19. Toimiiko nämä Recovery Diskit kaikilla erikielisillä käyttöjärjestelmillä, esimerkiksi suomenkielisissä käyttöjärjestelmissä.

    20. Thank you!
I’m downloading the torrent file (without any problem!).
      I have a big problem.
I bought my laptop with pre-installed Windows 7, but I’m an Ubuntu GNU/Linux user, so I’ve installed Ubuntu 9.10.
A couple of days ago I’ve updated my Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04 and installed the new version of Grub bootloader (grub2).
Unfortunately, Grub2 didn’t find my Win 7 installation.
I tried to downgrade grub (from 2 to Grub legacy) but the bootloader is unable to find my Windows installation.
With this Recovery disk can I recover Windows’ MBR and its bootloader?
      I hope so! 😀

Anyway, thank you for your work.

      Greetings from Italy

P.S.: I’m not a good english speaker (and writer :D), so I apologize for any error!

    21. Thank you very much. My Windows 7 system died on the pnp file after a black screen death as with others, for no apparent reason (possible a system update could have caused it?). Didn’t have a rescue disk which I will now sort out with both Kapersky and Windows 7 utilities. Thank you for providing this file, I am now up and running. Keep up the good work!

    22. May I know if this works for Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit OA? I’m afraid that later there might be a version mismatch etc. when I try to use this. Thanks!

    23. Thanks very much for sharing this. Your tongue-in-cheek remarks about paying $1000 for a computer with Windows 7, but without a boot disc, hit very close to home. The links themselves are also much appreciated. Cheers!

    24. I had dual boot Windows XP Pro and Windows 7, suddenly there’s no option for windows 7 in boot option. Only XP. I want back previous dual boot. I don’t know how to do it. Somebody help. Please.

    25. Hi Guys,

Do i need to open the .iso file before i burn it or i can just burn it once it finish downloads?

    26. how do i use windows 7 recovery disc?during formatting?pls help how to use it..thank you..

    27. @ Mahmoud Al-Qudsi :
I downloaded your 64-bit version and it has a MD5 checksum that fails with the one you posted on Oct. 19th 2009 – 06:32.
      Yours: 64-bit: 168,390,841 created from Windows 7 Build 6.1.7600.16385 with RecDisc.exe with an MD5 of CDE81C3D7B325B33D8E0EA1AD7E93655
      Mine : 64-bit : 168.337.408 bytes with an MD5 of F1F6E88C2C658981DE65873A4D236C93
How comes this difference ? Is mine corrupted ? Has the Recovery Disc been updated ?
      Sincerely,
      William Berzoff

      VISTA SUCKS DONKEY TUBES!
      WIN7 IS DA BOMB.
      NUFF SAID…

    29. Mahmoud,

As other have noted, I am getting an MD5=F1F6E88C2C658981DE65873A4D236C93 on the 32bit Vista download, not the MD5=CDE81C3D7B325B33D8E0EA1AD7E93655 which you noted on Oct. 19th, 2009.

Could you please verify that the file has not been corrupted?
