Disk for recovery & repair
If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.
Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.
Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.
It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.
The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.
The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

the file you download from utorrent doesnt come with install.wim in the sources file. so how do you get it?
For anyone having Install.Wim problems: It is 100% illegal to distribute that file. It contains core Windows Vista components used to install Vista on a machine from scratch, and is considered warez to redistribute without an accompnying license.
The recovery CD is just that – a medium intended for recovering a borked installation and not for reinstalling the OS from scratch.
Press the “Repair my Computer” link and not the “Install Now” button when using this CD. The “Install Now” option does not work and you will get install.wim-related error messages!!
omg thank you very much for this!! this is exactly what i needed….oem disk is freaking useless
I have a hp laptop, i installed a version of vista over a year now… I cant remember which one I installed… whichever one came with the laptop, i installed. I cannot find the CD now and the laptop is telling me that the version of Visa i downloaded is not genuine and i need to reinstall it or register it or go to a website. I could only use the laptop with reduced functionality..
Please help
hello
I have windows vista home premium, 32-bit os. which torrent should I download? i dont know the dirrernce between x86 and x64 -_-”
What do I do if I didn’t back up my files cause my computer was infected with viruses before I was able to. I put the disk in and it said, “Windows cannot open file D:\Sources\Install.wim. The file does not exist. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070002.” What am I suppose to do when I keep getting a blank screen with a mouse cursor everytime i log into my account?
Ok, I made a recovery disk, and booted from it. Got to the screen that has install/repair options.
When I click on the repair option I get:
The instruction at 0x74acd6df referenced memory at 0x00000028. The memory could not be read.
I tried opening up my case and ensuring that the memory is seated properly, but this didn’t help. I’m out of ideas, any suggestions.
Thank you so much! I can’t stand how Microsoft made Windows Vista inconvenient and cumbersome compared to Windows XP.
This torrent saved my life!
SCREW YOU MICROSOFT! JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING IS NEWER, DOESN’T MEAN IT’S BETTER!
Yeah forget the last message I sent. Is there a way that I backup my files in its current state? I tried doing the Windows Complete PC Restore but it keeps popping up a message saying, “No valid backup locations could be found. Windows cannot find a backup on the hard disks or DVDs on this computer. Attach the correct hard disk or insert the last backup DVD and then start the restore process again.” My laptop’s a VAIO PCG-7133L and I had it scanned at Best Buy and they said that there’s more than 80 viruses on the computer. So when I had it, I never had the chance to backup any files and if I send it off to Best Buy, they’re going to charge me $199.99 just to repair it. So I want to do it in a way that I don’t lose $200. Is there any sites that I can download someone’s backup files, burn it on a CD, and boot it in my computer?
Hi, I have the same question as inukiel Oct 10th, I also have Vista Home Premium 32 bit and don’t know which to download 64x or 86x ?
Found the answer on the original page of comments from Phil June 11th 2008
inukiel, if you haven’t seen it already, for the 32 bit you’ll need to download x86
thanks Phil

OK I thought that this would save my life today and started downloading it but because of bandwidth I have to put it on pause and now it repeatedly says this:
-No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.
WTF! please help….
I have an Acer x86 PC with Vista. Awhile ago I had to have the screen replaced because it broke but kept my HDD due to it having secure work files on it. When it was returned with the new screen, I reinstalled my HDD and it had an issue booting into windows. Safe mode and everything else didn’t work either. Back then I came upon your website and am just now trying this method. I downloaded the torrent, burnt it using Imgburn, put the cd into the laptop and booted it up. The first time I booted up it only went to a black screen with the cursor after selecting boot from cd. The second and every subsequent boot now goes to the windows background/splash screen and the cursor but fails to load anything further. Is there anything further I can do to get this to work?
Thanks for everything.
Ok i used a disc that came with an older computer that allowed me to fdisk and wipe it out..Then when i get to about 98% of my new install it gives me this error code :0x4001001300001002.I made my recovery discs before i dumped this laptop off of the recovery manager..Will this thing work to get me past that error at the end??
Hi, thanks a million for this! Downloaded the torrent file and µTorrent on my old XP laptop, installed µTorrent, set up my router for static IP, downloaded the CD image, connected and installed my old (slow) external CD burner, installed burning software, found an old (low-speed) CD-RW, burnt the image to that disc, put it in my dead (“An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data”) Vista laptop, booted from the new CD (after pressing F12 during startup – Toshiba Tecra), followed the on-screen instructions, went downstairs for breakfast and came back to find a fully functional Vista laptop again. And all of this without *really* knowing what I was doing. It’s people like you that give the internet a good name!

I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop that is currently running Vista. When I turned it on yesterday I got a boot error. It asked me for an installation cd but since I don’t have it I searched and found this. When I downloaded the ISO file it shows up as a .RAR file. Do I need to/Is there a way to tell WinRAR to leave .ISO files alone? If I burn it as is will it create issues when trying to use it?
Thanks in advance
TO ALL U GETTING A WINRAR FILE AND NOT AN ISO.
Answer is, it is an iso file, its just your computer doesn’t associate the iso with any other program other than winrar…. so DONT unrar it. and just burn it using an iso burning program. worked for me! your welcome
no entendi mucho lo que dicen jaj

I downloaded this, burnt it, and booted from it, it worked till i went to do the restore, the only dates it gave me to restore to are like less then 2 weeks ago, i want to restore it to the very beginning… I have an e-machine, Am i screwed? Do i just have to go buy a new copy of vista?

thank.s for you 4 Windows_Vista_x64_Recovery_Disc.iso
Ok so I’ve burned the disk, but the PC i’m trying to recover just sets up as normal. I’ve tried pressing F12 but nothing happens….? Just goes straight to the password screen everytime.
I’m getting the install.wmi problem which doesn’t seem to be addressed on this page?
Thanks you so much for this you saved me ?300 (the price which dell told me I would have to pay)
Much appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the product! My daughter (who is by no means a computer guru) called me in a panic because her computer at work wouldn’t boot and it’s in Vista. It locked up and she had to power down and up and the ‘missing ntldr.exe’ hit her. This is a small Dr’s office, so no IT help. I found your prog., talked her through downloading BitTorrent, getting your prog. and then burning the .iso via Nero, which thankfully she had on another computer. Everything worked great and she is back up and running, all long distance. Maybe I can move to India and provide tech support now? Thanks again….saved the day.
Thanks for this. I had no Restore or original Installation discs for my 3 new machines, so when one had an issue with the Boot files, your Recovery disk sorted within 5 minutes.
Right basically I have a Trojen and need to get rid of it but the virus scanneres don’t seem to be cleaning it. I have researched the Trojen and it seems to be one that the scanners wont get rid of so I’m guessing that I need to recover my system to factory settings but I no that some of the System 32 Files are incrypted so will this boot disk sort this problem out?? If not what do I need to do??

Hey guys, ive been having troubles with my Acer one day i was playing a game and it ran out of battery, so i was ok with that, but it was taking forever to shut down so i did the stupid mistake of turning it off manually, later that day when i pluged it in to charge, i turned it on and it started the load bar, that just kept on looping, n i read up on it n i had to re-intall vista, so i did n now i was installing vista updates and it got stuck, n eventually said, cannot install updates correctly, reverting, do not shut down, so i waited and nothing, now i have the ISO burned and put in the cd and it boots straight away, and says the following :-
Preparing to start your computer.
This may take a few minutes. Please wait…

I would just like to say a great big thank you. I am so far from computer savvy it is not even amusing, yet your instructions were easy enough for me to use my old laptop to download and burn the cd necessary to recover the new HP that I bought about six months ago and somehow managed to fry today. With this recovery I was able to salvage the os that had all my uni assignments and music, publications, etc. Thank you so much!

Im wondering if this Windows Vista Recovery Disc repairs my Vista….. i bought a laptop a few months ago and it came with a Tiny Vista installion disc and not all the vista programs are on disc and i dont feel like reinstalling my Windows Vista Burnt copy on my laptop cause its not Genuine unlike my tiny vista disc…. Please Help 🙂 Thank You
Hi, haven’t read all of this page as so much communication….i think one of the lessons to learn here is that although the manufacturers are being ‘cheapskates’ by not including recovery discs or original vista discs, you the buyers should create the discs straight away…they all remind you of this if you’ve brought it from new with pop ups and included paperwork for some (with Toshoba you can create more than 1 copy, Fujitsu and HP only 1 set unfortunately). Especially if upgrading your Vista, incidentaly, if you have servicepack 1 then you can upgrade without loss of files, no servicpack 1 and you’ll only be-able to install/wipe your HDD which will mean loss of drivers/software. The loss of actual O/S discs is to cut down on piracy!! I know i was able to use an old XP disc about 4 times on other machines before i had the ‘contact microsoft’ page. If you have Vista on an HP, and you’ve lost your recovery discs, then there is a way to create another set!!!!! I’m happy for this website to pass on your e-mails should you require this. I’ve tried it and it works. Could save a bit of money!
Cheers.
