Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    1. I was on of the victim of the Vista SP1 upgrade. It happened a couple of months ago. I tried almost every method possible which I’d gathered from the internet. But, none worked.

Eventually I called up the Lenovo help desk. From it, I learned that there’re some hot keys “wired” into the Lenovo machine. You can use that to retrieve your data as well as doing recovery.

I suggest you guys who’re using Lenovo PC/laptops to give the tech help desk a call. It may prove fruitful.

    2. Yes it does work with Vista Home 32bit. Keeping in mind that this is not the installation disc for windows vista. this is just a software that will allow you to Boot up vista and do tasks such as restore your O/S to a working condition.

    3. Thanks guys!
Works perfectly. You saved my life…my PC’s live actually, but still pretty cool!
Thanks again, keep up the good work!

    4. i have a toshiba laptop with vista home premium 32 bit preinsatlled on it. i tried to dual boot xp but xp wouldnt recognize my hardware. so i uninstalled xp but now vista has a boot error and the recovery disc they gave me is a 64 bit version. will the ecovery disc here fix that problem

    5. Thank you for your Recovery Disk (.iso). The CD ran properly for me, but unfortunately restoring the registry didn’t fix my problem (infinite-restart) =( .

    6. Hi, I tried to download the stuff, but it is some torrent. Sorry for my ignorance, but I really dont know how to open it. Can you please guide me.

My vista has crashed and I need to boot it with recovery CD. I have a vista home premium which had come bundled with my HP laptop.

      Regards,

      Jiten

    7. Thanks Mike.

I will try and do that.

I had one more question before i do that, I can start windows in safe mode, but cant start windows in normal way. Is there a way that i can just repair this portion and start using it again, as i have lot of data on my laptop and i cannot afford to loose it.

i have tried connecting an external hard drive through USB to transfer my data but, it hangs up and does not copy the data.

I also tried to boot in safe mode with Command prompt, but it does not identify the external drive connected by USB in that case, and i have also forgotton the MS dos commands by now.

      Can you please guide.

      Regards,

      Jiten

    8. Hi Guru,

    9. I’ve been looking for something like this for ages now. One thing though, is there any way of getting this program to boot from a USB flash drive?

    10. HI computer guru!
i have vaio VGN-CR35G after wipe and erase data
its first recovery disc is lost
may i get recovery disc set(3 DVD’s) including operating system

    11. I just burned the thing to a blank Cd. I restarted and it booted from the disc. Then it said loading Windows files, then the Microsoft Coporation thing poped up and loaded, then right after that, everything goes blank, what should I do?????

    12. PLEASE HELP!
After entering the product key it shows an error saying “Windows cannot open the required file E:\Sources\Install.wim. The file does not exist. Make sure all files required ofr installation are avaliable and restart the installation. Error code 0x80070002”

    13. i have burnt the cd. when i install it, it says that following file is missing i.e. E:\Sources\install.wim

Size of the download is 120.5MB.

      Please guide.

    14. I burnt the ISO image and ran it in my windows vista but when I click a key to continue the boot, the computer just freezes and stays like that ’till it shuts down please help!

    15. Again, for the last time:

If you get an install.wim error, it’s because you’re trying to install Vista with this CD. That’s not allowed. You need to use the “Repair your computer” link on the screen before.

    16. I tested the Vista program for 3 months during a trial period and didn’t like it. It uses lots of memory with way too many features that I never use. I prefer the good old XP program which is easy to navigate. But since Microsoft doesn’t sell XP anymore, I looked around and happened to come across the Open Office (OPEL) program, sponsored by Sun Microsystem. It’s an open-source program that’s similar and compatible to the Word and Excel programs. So far I’m very happy with it as a substitute and permanent replacement for Vista. The OPEL is absolutely free and can be downloaded at http://www.openoffice.org/index.html

    17. Hi im having the bootmgr problem and i need to run the comand prompt can i do that with this file?

    23. Hi,.
I am in similar situation and in great frustration to fix my laptop with Oxc000000f status message after upgrading XP to Vista Enterprise. Everything was working fine for two months until I tried to install printer and suddely I start getting this status message.

Now my situation is even worse becuase when I turned on laptop ( Toshiba)Sat. it displays only two windows one with header WINDOWS BOOT MANAGER ( Windows failed to start. A recent HW or SW chnage might be the cause with some more description along woth status message Oxc000000f.).

The second windows is again with header WINDOWS BOOT MANAGER with description saying that Choose an operating system or start…..Microsoft Windows Vista …. Tools: WIndows Memory Diagnostic.

The Laptop is switching back and forth between these two windows whenever i tried to turn it on using different CDs in drive D. I have tried XP, VISTA and also Vista Recovery ( Both mentioned here…) .

I want to know what should I do at his stage?

I am thinking of formatting hard disk to install XP or Vista again but I cannot get to dos prompt as I can see two windows only .

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    25. Hello,
      I have 3 questions:

      1) What is the difference between WinRE and Vista Recovery Disk?

      2) Is there a download link for the recovery disk for people on networks that do not allow torrent downloads?

      3) Do the recovery utilities on the Vista Recovery Disk also work in Windows XP? If not, maybe at least some of them?? If so, which ones?

      Thanks

    26. downloaded the file via uTorrent and did not get a ISO file but a SDI file file folders. Is there a way to get the actual ISO image. Did not want to have to fool around with the WAIK Utiltiy to generate the ISO image. Anyone have a good link to the ISO image? Thanks, Chuck

    27. Thanks for this. The repair startup option said it had found problems and fixed my system. However, I still couldn’t boot it; I got ‘A disk read error occurred
      Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart’

bootrec /fixboot reported that there was no valid file system and did nothing, although the file system was perfectly readable, by the recovery disk and indeed by Linux.

      ‘A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart’ comes from the Partition Boot Sector code, when it is trying to read in the first 16 sectors of the partition.

I was installing a replacement hard drive, and it turned out that the final problem was caused by setting it up with a partition editor (Linux gparted) that didn’t let me type in exact sectors for partition locations. I had a hidden recovery partition as the first primary partition, and my Vista installation was the second primary partition. The first partition was reported as being the same size on both the old and new drives, but on the new drive the first sector of the second partition was different. Offset 28 in the first sector of the NTFS partition holds the sector offset of the partition for a primary partition, and the partition boot sector code uses this value to find the first 16 sectors of the partition. Because I had copied the entire partition from the old to the new disk, this value was wrong on the new drive. After I patched it with the value from the new drive’s Master Boot Record Partition Table, I could boot into Vista.

Offered in the hope that someone else may find it helpful.

    28. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!! Solved my problems perfectly! First time I tried, the .iso appeared as .rar (?), and I could open it with winrar. I used Nero and did not work, tried again with Imgburn (downloaded it in minutes) and everything ok! Thanks! Thank you very much, really

    29. Please somebody help!! i have a oem vista on a hidden x: partition. when i try to install using this cd it looks for it on k: how do i tell it to find the needed files on x:
Please help iv tried everything and thought i finally had it.. now my head is pulsating and im considering just sending the whole thing to manufacturer meaning i prob won’t get it back til after chrissy:(

    30. Thanks !!!!!!
I used gpart to resize vista partition, and my laptop did not boot after… Unfortunately, i have only recovery cd, not a plain vista. Your recovery disc fixed it.

    31. Ugh… just got the dreaded 0xc000000f error as well on an HP laptop. This is the 3rd time. Just so happens their recovery disk will not allow me to repair winload.exe. Instead of shipping my laptop back to HP for yet another wipe (and losing a lot of precious data), I stumbled upon this and giving it a shot. Thanks for all of your efforts and helping people out.

    32. Please help me!
I have a big problem. With the recovery disc I can repair crcdisk.sys I can’t start Vista normal. When I restart, in the safe mode Vista won’t boot again too. The screen stops at crcdisk.sys

On 9 december David Edwards wrote something about a problem when you used GParted Live. I used this program a few months ago for partitions. He wrote a solution, but I don’t understand how he excactly did this.

Can anyone help me to get Vista back? I don’t know what to do.
I haven’t tried to reinstall vista completely, because my data stays on partition D.

      Thanx,
      Harm

    33. I installed a new blank hard drive and i installed the operating system vista of course and it goes as far to put product keys and i put them in and then after that it says the instalation cancelled and the another window pops up saying windows cannot open the reguire file D:\Source\Install.wim make sure all files requred for instalation are available and restart installation ERROR CODE 0X8007000D

      PLEASE ANYBODY HELP

    34. To the guy above..

This is a RECOVERY disc. Not an installation disc. Dont expect an installation disc only 120mb. Its more than 2GB. So, you just need to buy the original or pirated copy

    35. Hello,
I have Vista Home Basic installed on dell inspiron laptop . But unfortunately a virus was found in the system directory in the file msimg32.exe by avg 7.5 and when i clicked on heal there comes a message “Successfully Healed”. When i shut down an error came that LogonUI.exe cannot be opened because msimg32.exe was not found but after some time it automatically shut down but when i opened the system then same error came that LogonUI.exe cannot be opened because msimg32.exe was not found and window was not opened .

I have downloaded the iso image and burned it on a disk .

Now after booting from the disk I clicked on repair errors but it didn’t find any errors and when I boot from the hard disk it shows the same thing….

Can this disk help me repair this error….?
Please someone help me , I am in need of help…

    36. Neelanshu, a couple of thoughts.

Do you know when the virus arrived? If so, can you roll back to a Restore Point before this without messing up, for instance, any software that you have installed in the meantime?

Otherwise, you will have to find how msimg32 has embedded itself in the registry, and edit it out. I think you can do this with the Repair disk; launch a command shell, run regedit, and load the registry hives from c:/windows/system32/config in turn, and get rid of all the msimg32 values.

    37. hey guys i was just googling solutions for THE WINDOWS Vista BOOT REPAIR – wonder why i’m getting that message during boot ‘ BOOT MSG missing , press Alt+Ctrl+Del to restart but it works when i insert a live windows CD in it (like win XP or vista ) , now i’m really tired of doing this after a long time , i’ve just started downloading this ….. will this help me after all i read everthing at the top , and will it be fine to run this iso format vai demon tools , really iv’e surfed over google for 5 days searching for the solutions , if this’ll work for me i’m really thankfull
