Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    7. I love you!

Just got to my parents house a few days ago for christmas, left my vista DVD at home and my BCD went blam-o two days ago making me search for solutions not involving the original installation disc but nothing worked until I tried this.

Seriously thank you so very much!!!

    8. Hi my borthers laptop got a virus and then it had the “NTLDR is missing” error and would not boot. I can get the ISO to boot and it seems to work but it doesn’t seem to wont to fix the problem. In guids I’ve read they tell me to use the “\boot\bootsect.exe” tool but it seems to be missing from both the 32 and 64bit ISOs that are here.

Is there another recovery iso floating around that is more compleat? Am I just doing something wrong? I’d really like to know.

    9. Hi,

I have downloaded this torrent and burned it to a CD and DVD. When I put the disk in, I get the Boot from a Cd/DVD and press any button… Then, I get another screen that mentions to Boot from a program : Windows … and then below it has Windows Memory Diagnostic. I click on the first program and it then loads for a while and then there is a black screen. If I let the computer sit for a while, a mouse arrow pops up but then nothing else. I can move the mouse pointer but there is only a black screen behind it. Am I just impatient or is the disk not working properly? Maybe I should continue to wait and see if the screen with the repair options pops up? I can’t seem to boot my computer at all. Please give me some suggestions.

    10. Just want so say “Thanks”!
The beauty of internet help reflects on you guys!

This recovery disc helped me a lot today! What happended to me? Well, I’m trying to implement Linux into the computers here at home (more precisely the Ubuntu distro). About two days ago I tried to install the newest of openSuse in a Toshiba Laptop, the 11.1. I wanted to see the diference between Ubuntu and opensuse (700Mb vs 4.7Gb of data per disc).
Since it was my first on the opensuse installation, I got spooked and cancelled the operation, returning to the familiar Ubutntu live disc in a heartbeat (I must say to you that I’m not a computer geek or a TI guy – I’m just regular Joe that loves computers).

Tried to make partitions to gain some free space for Linux and tried to restart the pcI(I think that my mistake was moving partitions back and forth – I wanted the win partit0ion to be in the first one, the second the recovery one, the third open space for linux and the last for the data). I don’t remember why I did it, but I restarted the laptop. Then it happend. An error at startup. Before any kind of F8 Help..

“This is bad”, I thought looking onto my family’s laptop.
“I didn’t make a recovery disc for this system” (I did one before on my Hp Laptop). “Well lets put the Hp recovery disc to see what happens!”

      Nothing!

      “Huh… Well… Let’s hit the internet!!”

      Then I found you guys!

      Download\Burn\Insert\Repair\Restart\Repair\Restart\Ok

Thanks a lot, it worked very, very well! 5*!
Have a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

    11. Hi, I burned the iso file to a cd using ImgBurn successfully, but when I popped it into my laptop it just opens a folder with some files and I’m not sure what to do next? It shows bootmgr, boot, and sources.

    12. Tios sois cojonudos. Sois los putos amos. Después de 2 días sufriendo para recuperar la MBR de VISTA, va vuestro disco y en un plis plas, ahí está hecho.

En fin, spis unos cracks. No tengo palabrotas suficientes para describil-lo.

      Juanito

    13. Found a link leading over here on the OCZ Tech forums for running diskpar.exe (for partition alignment on SSDs) without needing a second computer. Many thanks!

    14. Hello,
I have downloaded both files and copied to CD using ImgBurn.
Windows is loading files, the bar goes across the screen, I then get the Microsoft Corporation loading screen for a couple of seconds, then like T Wiggins it goes black and a little arrow sits there. I can move it around but do little else.
I have a Toshiba A200 and it’s only 10 months old (but I have lost the receipt).
      Please can someone help!
      Thanks!

    15. I downloaded the torrent and opened through Vuze. I extracted the files but none of the files say .ISO

I’m using a iso recorder to burn to disk, but it can’t recognize an iso file in your .zip file. Am I missing something? I have the boot folder and sources folder and boot manager file…where is the .iso file?

      Thanks!

    16. I love you 2! thanks so much for creating this!! my 10 yr. old son was devastated and is now very happy again!

    17. Hi
I have a toshiba laptop with a faulty dvd drive.
Is it possible for me to mount this image to restore vista?
Please advise any other solutions if possible.
      Thanks in anticipation.

    18. Hi Guru

Can I mount this image to repair vista?
Please advise of any other possibilities as well.
      Thanks in anticipation.

    19. Heres my dilema—
i purchase a new velocity micro promagix a51 from circut city.
I upgraded to service pack 1 on windows home premium.
after i installed it it was running fine and then the blue creen of death lol.
when i restarted the computer i got the error message bootmgr so i tried to do a system recovery with the recovery discs from velocity to no avail i would get this error message 0x2001001300001002 saying if this error continues contact velocity customer support.
this was sunday morning and they are closed.
so i contacted microsoft they told me i have to have a windows retail copy disc to fix the bootmgr and that they couldnt send me one becuase my copy is a OEM version. So i started surfing google and found this site so i downloaded the Windows Vista 32-Bit (x86) Recovery Disc Torrent created a iso disc and right when i was booting up A microsoft manager called me back asking if my ticket was resolved.
so i asked him about this file and how come they were not aware of this and this is what he told me.
this file is for techs who put large numbers of oem software on computers and that he strongly suggests that i dont use it.
so me being me i tried it and when it came to the part to search for your windows it asks me to intall my hard drive drivers wich i do not have!!!
thats where i am know LMAO!!!
i heard windows vista was terrible and now i agree !!!!
im waiting till tomarrow to contact velocity and see what they tell me and tell them i want my disc!!
If i do not get any answers from them BYE BYE VISTA !!!
      Im installing XP PRO !!!!!!!!!!!!!
      But if anyone has any ideads im open for some suggestions :-}

    20. Thank you so much Guru! Your recovery CD saved ten days of my life, which otherwise would be spent on waiting for a CD from HP. Worked like magic on my Vista-64 desktop. For some reason, on the first boot it didn’t give me what I was looking for, but after the reboot the HP recovery console (32-bit) magically appeared on the menu.
Thanks again and all the best in 2009!

    21. I downloaded this cd. It works. I put my key and then the error to install the install.wim comes up. Then i looked and found a cd of windows vista to upgrade. I put it in. it worked the same as the one i burned here…i didnt get the error messag anymore. it is now installing..hope this works because the error code i kept getting when starting my laptop was that there was an error installing the windows. Hope this works. try buying the cd on ebay or something..or go to a tech. place maybe they have it.

    22. i updated my computer to service pack 1 on vista home premium
this is a brand new velocity micro pc promagic a51.
everything was fine then i got the blue screen told me to reboot when i did i got the no boot cfg screen.
So i tried to do a system restore with the discs that came with the computer and i get this error message 0x2001001300001002 telling me to contact velocity tech support if it continues which it defintly did.
this was on sunday and they are not open so i decided to contact microsoft.
microsoft told me that i need a windows vista home premium disc wich i do not have because they dont ship them with new computers. so i asked if microsoft can send me one and the tech told me only if it is a retail copy and not a oem wich mine is LOL. (a rip off so microsoft can make more money]
the tech told me to ask my freinds if they have one and to conact velocity and we hung up leaving my ticket open.
So i decided to hit the net searching in google i found your site downloaded this file burned the mage put it in the pc and a microsoft manager called me back at that moment {FUNNY}.
So i asked him how come he wasnt aware of this file he asked me for the website i gave it to him and after putting me on hold he came back and told me {that this file is for techs who put large numbers of windows on pcs that he suggests that i do not use and get a copy of vista}.
well me being me i decided to give it a shot when it gets to the screen to select your operating system the operating system is not in the window and it tells me to intall the hard drive drivers.
      thats where im at !!!
I heard windows vista was terrible by freinds and with this expeiriance and starting to agree.
im going to contact velocity today and if they cant help me im going back to windows XP

    23. Downloaded it, created the image, booted from the CD…….

      Worked perfectly.

      Thanks !!!!!!!!!!

    24. I’m trying to use this to recover but whenever i get to the select an o.s. screen i need to add drivers because it doesn’t see vista for some odd reason. I can even navigate to the C drive and everything’s still there! what do i do?

    25. Hey
I downloaded the CD, put it into my computer and I arrive at the same place as the night before. I restarted the computer and pressed F8, nothing happened. Restarts again, *spams F8*, same place. Have I done something wrong anywhere?
I’m using a Windows Vista Home Basic, x32-Bit one.

      – Thanks

    26. Hey
I downloaded the CD, put it into my computer and I arrive at the same place as the night before. I restarted the computer and pressed F8, nothing happened. Restarts again, *spams F8*, same place. Have I done something wrong anywhere?

    27. Guys i dont know what happened but my HP Pavilion just wont start everytime i put start automatically it just turns black and nothing happens. i put the cd in the computer and i started it and it then said to press any key to read from cd or whatever. then i went into like a vista background thing and there i had to LOAD something.. and i didnt know what to do.. please help me! emergency. i have a paper due in the next few days

    28. Worked perfectly…I screwed myself good by making changes in easyBCD that I didn’t entirely understand. Well to make a long (2 day) story short I couldn’t access either Vista or Ubuntu (liveCD only) so w/o this disk I was done! Fortunately, I had a recovery partition and was able to repair Vista and repair GRUB and now I have a great, seamless dual-boot. Sorry I didn’t post all my trials (what a nightmare!!) but I don’t play well with others when I’m frustrated. All I can say is, Thanks!!!

    29. AMRER:

      You are going fine!

After the cd boot, you will see a language selection menu.
Select English, and select your keyboard default (but i think thats only for command prompt).

Another menu will appear, saying install.
Instead of install, go to the lower-left options and select startup repair.

It worked for me. I had to reboot and repair 2 times. After the second time windows rebooted normaly.

      Good luck!

    30. Joan:

Before F8, you need to do the following in order to use the recovery cd.

You need to prime your dvd/cd drive for start up in the BIOS menu.

      There are 2 ways:

After pressing the ‘on’ button, press the corresponding key to enter the BIOS setup, or SETUP
(it could be the BELETE key, but it can be other – watch the bottom of the screen for instructions).

In the BIOS setup, hit the arrows to go back and forth in the diferent tab menus. Go to the boot menu.
Go down (arrows) to select the dvd/cd drive, and use the F5 or F6 to order the boot sequence.
      || The dvd/cd drive MUST BE THE TOP ONE. ||

Press Esc and select “exit and save settings”. Your computer will start up using the dvd/cd drive, before the hard drive.
(don’t worry about the settings you made in the bios. you will be able to start up normaly after the this repair issue)

There is another way… after powering on the computer, press – watch the bottom of the screen for instructions –
the BOOT setup key (in the computer i used the cd it was the F2).
Using the arrows, select the device you want to boot from. Select your dvd/cd drive by hitting Enter.

After the cd boot, you will see a language selection menu. Select English, and select your keyboard default
(but i think thats only for command prompt).

Another menu will appear, saying install.
Instead of install, go to the lower-left options and select “Startup Repair”.

It worked for me. I had to reboot and repair 2 times. After the second time, windows rebooted normaly.

      Good luck!

    31. Hey guys, I’m having a problem with using this to help repair the start-up file that was apparently broken… I burned it, put it in, setup to start from the disc and it says that windows is loading the files, but then stays on a blackscreen with the pointer forever… Is it supposed to do this? How long do I have to wait?

    32. I came across this page while looking for a way to fix my Vista .NET 3.0. I’ve spent the last 5-6 days doing only that… surfing for ideas, attempting repairs, and again and again… so far, not much luck. I did come across a few utilities that will come in handy I’m sure, but so far, no cigar… I was hoping this recovery disk might do the trick, but unfortunately, that did not work for me. Great utility tho, I’m sure it’ll come in handy sooner or later.. 🙂

Well, back to my googling for ideas…

    33. So my problem is that Windows Vista while it does show the driver in the device manager, can’t find the drive assignment itself in any of the windows applications. Can not burn a CD because that is one of the symptoms of the problem.

    34. Can you download recovery disk for windows vista on a Mac and the Img burn won’t work on my Mac

    35. You can download the torrent on Mac using any one of the popular torrent clients (deluge, vuze, and uTorrent work best) and burn it using anything from the default OS X CD burner to my personal fav: Burn.

    36. somebody please help!….i downloaded the torrent file..it is sat on my computer as a .rar file. i used imgburn to put this onto a cd. i booted the cd on my laptop..i get the “press any key to boot the cd or dvd” message. after doing that, a message appears saying “windows is loading files” and a bar appears across the bottom of my screen. once the files have loaded i get the microsoft corporation screen with a small loading bar underneath for a couple of minutes. then i get a blank screen. no pointer, no cursor, nothing.
