Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    1. This is actually my CD content : bootmgr ; boot\bcd, boot.sdi, bootfix.bin ; sources\boot.wim

Is this correct ? May the fact that my CD is a CR-RW be a possible cause of the boot failure ?

    2. I have tried both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the recovery disc and they both work great.

btw, i used nero to burn both discs from the iso and i had no boot problems with them.

thank you so much for this. saved me a lot of time…

    3. I booted from the disc but when it asks for the vista product key on the bottom of the computer, it says that it cannot be validated. Any help?

    4. okay, well i used this, and after using it i could not even start my computer any longer??
it got soo bad the computer would attempt to load vista loser, and would fail, then go to windows nt and 2000? which my computer didnt even have. of course they would fail. and then i had to go to a computer guy to repair it. and he did the job. now my computers messed again cuz of something stupid i downloaded. and im in a dilemma. i dont wanna spend the money to go back and tell him to fix it. he said he couldny manage to make a recovery disc for me. soo now i’m lookin at this again cuz it seems soo convincing with all the responses. but my acer am1640 didn’t seem to work. i mean the installation process worked. but once it restarted after installin it wouldnt even start. what do i do. i need someones help. is this site legit> if it is why is it not on the microsoft site? why is it on some neosmart site????

    5. I downloaded, burned & booted the Vista 32 bit recovery disk for my Sony vaio. I clicked on repair. It went to a screen that says: “System Recovery Options” “Select an operating system to repair and click next. If you do not see your operating system listed, click load drivers to load drivers for your hard disks.” Since I didn’t see anything listed under operating system, I clicked “load drivers.” Another little box pops-up and says: “Insert the installation media for the device and click OK to select the driver.” I have no idea what this means so I click ok. Now another screen comes that says “open” at the top. It says “look in” with a drop down menu next it. When I click the arrow to open the drop down menu and the choices are ” sources, Desktop, System, Public, Com puter, Local Disk (C), CD Drive (D), Recovery (E), Boot (X), Sources.” To the left are: RECENT PLACES, SYSTEM, COMPUTER.

I have no idea what to do now. Can someone please advise me on my next move. Why does the disk seem to work flawlessly for everyone else. Just my luck. Any ideas??

    6. I tried using the startup repaid and it fails with error msg “Startup repari cannot repair this computer automatically. Sneding more information can help MS create solutions. I tried even a fresh install and it failed becuz the CD doesnt have Installwin.wmi (i think i spelled the file name correctly).

    7. It’s asking for a serial number because you are trying to INSTSALL the disk. This disk does not install it will only REPAIR. So instead of clicking INSATLL NOW, you need to click on REPAIR.

    8. When I boot to the 64bit version of the CD it seems to want to install vista, is it installing it on the cd or on the hard drive? I got out of the program at that point because I didnt want to mess up my system.
      Any help would be appreciated.
      Kevin

    9. I’m in france and I don’t have access to a PC to download this torrent. My work PC can’t download the torrent software. I have Freinds with a Mac. Could the Mac download and run the torrent, then either burn the windows CD or transfer the file to my work PC so I can burn.

Don’t want to wait weeks for a CD to come in the mail.

    13. I downloaded the Vista 32 bit recovery ISO file using the link on this page, but am confused: The web page says it is a 120 MegaByte download, but the file I downloaded (Vista_Recovery_Disc.iso) is only 19.1 Kilobytes. Does it expand to 120 MB, or did the wrong file get downloaded? Please help this novice figure out how to save his system. Thanks!

    17. Message to Computer Guru or anyone else : I usually read all comments posted but here, there are too many ! Is there someone who was active in this page who can summarize the key points in all these posts ? It could be 5 or 10 bullet points. A real thank you if someone can do this for the community.

    18. Addendum following my post above : If you Computer Guru do such a summary, you might include it at the end of the main article. The big advantage is that it will not be lost in the middle of the posts in the future.

    19. Hi

I am trying this for a friend whose laptoip has died. I’m not sure whether I should download the 32 or 64 bit version. How do I find out, given his laptop won’t boot up currently?

      Thanks

      Mike

    20. I seriously find is amusing that the ONE biggest problem the “install.wim” one is being completely avoided and ignored and not being resolved. Why is that guys? Because its my problem and I’ve wasted 4 blank CDs trying to re-do it and re-downloading it and there’s no solution on this page. I’ve looked at all the comments.

    21. “Stop Israel’s massacre of innocent women and children in Gaza!”????

    22. I’ve successfully downloaded and use the recovery disk, but my laptop is searching for install.wim and i can’t find it anywhere on the disk pls. help me

    23. Hey guys I have a little problem. I have an Asus gaming series laptop and a friend of mine thought it would be funny to mess around and become the sole admin of my laptop. Well now I need it back seeing as he also put parental controls on it for fun and every other hour I am logged off and can’t get work done like this. I burned the ISO image to a disk and tried to re install windows but i get to the screen where you enter your product key and type it in, and then on the page after that I get the error 0x80070002 saying that its missing a file and then it brings me back to the first page of the installation, any suggestions?

      Vista Home Premium (64-bit)
      Asus G1 series

    24. Hey guys I have a little problem. I need to reinstall vista with this but I get the error 0x80070002 on the screen after you type in your product key, any suggestions?

I have Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit)
      Asus G1 series gaming laptop

    25. The original problem I think was a vista update to my DELL Inspiron… once it restarted after them it went to a BSOD, tried restarting but even safe mode brings up the blue screen and system restore brings up the blank screen… so I tried this recovery CD…

I downloaded the files and burnt them to DVDs just fine, booted using f12 boot menu went well, got past the “windows loading files” stage alright, started to load windows but once the loading bar disappeared nothing happened… screen just stayed black (not off, backlight was still on)…

      help would be appreciated, thanks

    26. hey,

I am trying to dual boot my lenovo laptop that came with windows vista to run xp also.
I sucessfully installed xp and now the computer can run xp. I also installed bcd_edit on xp so that i cud restore the vista boot records. Now when i start the system, it shows me both vista and xp to choose from, but if i select to start vista, it takes me to the screen asking if i want to start windows normally, and after that it just doesnt go to the login page and restarts.

I have been reading thro many of these forums to figure wats the problem, and finally cant seem to fix things by myself, so posting for help here, pls help me out here.

The recovery disk that i had created for vista isnt working becos, i had made tat before i made the partition and now the image is large to try a recovery. The laptop did not come with any other vista installation cds. I burned a vista recovery cd i found on neosmart. and tried to boot thro that, it says there was a startup problem and then it searches the problem and all its tests area success but it cant fix the system.

    27. Like the Asus laptop user above, I cannot get any of these “recovery\repair” disks to boot. I tried three different ISO burners on different DVD disks but all I get is that annoying blinking light. I have NOT tried the one listed here, but others, including the MSKB approved WAIK repair ISO file. I will try this tonight, and thanks.

    28. Ummm is this for windows vista 32bit home or is it for windows vista 64bit ultimate?

Funny how this guy talks like he’s smart yet he fails to address what version of vista this recovery disk is for.

    29. hi i was wondering why when i try to download it only gives me an option to save it when i try to open with img burn it says wrong format what am i doing wrong

    30. AWESOME peoples, thankyou very much, this “rescue” disk has just saved me a lot of headache Cheers!

    31. HI!

I have a fujitsu siemens computer running windows vista and seem to have a virus that i can’t get rid of. I have tried windows defender (crap i know), a-squared, AVG, and malwarebytes and none of them can find a virus. Sneaky little thing! But everytime I use the internet I get redirected to pages that I don’t want and sometimes the internet just shuts down altogether. Will this recovery CD fix this problem and do you have an suggestions on how to better protect myself in the future?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!!!

    32. HEY, GUYS.
      you’ve just saved me.
after trying to install an old driver for my midi controller, i got stuck at the boot screen. i couldnt even log into vista to undo the mess.

i’ve followed the steps to recover the disk using ur bootdisk (x86) ’till step 3.
the only issue i had was with the ‘bootsect.exe’. i couldnt find it in the recover disk, so i’ve downloaded one from 4shared.com and added ti to the iso image.

i wanna thank u boys (and girls?) by saving me from another vista reinstall.
thank you and to my sister (for burnin’ me the .iso)

      cheers 😉

    33. believe the hype people… this thing works

i was panicking thing i permanently messed up the laptop. the black screen came up with this error message and all that… my brother was in my ear laughing at me… it was a nightmare

but i followed the instructions and sorted the damn thing out…

thanks for putting this page up!!!

    34. Computer Guru. I cannot find any iso files after extracting the 32 bits vista recovery disc. I’ve downloaded 2 times just to make sure that there’s no problem with my downloading but still got the same result after extracting the rar file. any solution? thanks.

    35. My laptop also failed to boot this morning, I have a Compaq presario f500 and beleve the VRAM to be 64Mb. I’ve downloaded the 32bit torrent file posted and burnt on to a blank DVD+R. Upon inserting the disc I get the same message as before, Windows has failed to boot, insert recovery disc and restart you computer. The disc spins, however you can tell it doesnt really like what its reading. Have I done something wrong?

I confirm the file downloaded as being called Vista_Recovery_Disc, and the type of file to be an Image File (.iso)

      Prior thanks,

      Matthew

    36. ****

I think Nero has a problem burning bootable ISO images – I advise you to attempt to burn it with ImgBurn instead (it’s free and a tiny download).

Also, please check the MD5 of the downloaded ISO if it still doesn’t work.

      ****#

Sorry Guru, I didn’t see this message brfore, I’ll try using ImgBurn and get back in touch once I have.

      Matthew.

    37. Let me just tell you guys something i have learned over the years of my IT experience. Nero has a problem with bootable images being burned to a disc.. You MUST use another program… i personally recommend MagicISO or some program that enables you to “see” bootable images. Burn the image using MagicISO and i guarantee that it will work.. I can’t vouch for any other programs though.. not to say that there aren’t others out there.

    38. And i have not tested it, but depending on your BIOS and the settings… (especially if it is a newer system) you SHOULD be able to extract the files from the ISO to a thumb drive (which you can do with MagicISO or PowerISO) But MAKE SURE you put the files straight onto the thumb drive. Don’t put them into a folder on the thumb drive cause that’s not going to work. I think you know what i mean. I hope this is all of some assistance to you guys.

Again… MagicISO or PowerISO and possibly UltraISO will work for your needs.

    39. Hi, I just wanted to say thanks for this great software! freeBSD messed up my MBR and this fixed it.
