Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    5. i am using toshiba satellite l310. i was using xp as os and recently when i tried to formate and install vista, it didnot formated and vista installed and old xp files compiled into old windows folder. i also tried for boot from cd but found error of os not found in cd. i also want to install intel matrix storage device driver but for that i think formate is needed. so guide me how to formate my laptop with this cd.

    6. This is a message to all of the people trying to use this to install. DON’T ! It is not an install cd. It is a repair cd. If you try to use it to install, it WILL fail because it doesnt have the installation image needed to install. This is not a magic bullet to put vista back on after you wiped out your drive with Ubuntu or by trying to downgrade to XP. If you deleted the Recovery partition, you need to buy a copy of the recovery DVD’s from the manufacturer. Once again, This is not an install cd, so don’t even bother with the “Install” option.

    7. this .iso = 120MB
      WAIK = 992MB

But what exactly is in this .iso?

We understand this is not an “install” disk FOR INSTALLING TO HARD DRIVE.

However, this is a streamlined and functional Vista OS, which in fact is FASTER than any hard disk-installed (RAM-diskless) Vista.

And, with some tweaks this “recovery Vista” can be expanded to include whatever the “extras” an end user might require.

Your existing hard disk-installed Vista that you paid for when you bought your PC has EVERYTHING you need to do this.

    8. @willib

FreeBSD will not touch your MBR unless you select that option during install. The install menu is quite clear about that and if I recall it even warns Windows users not to leave the MBR alone. Moreover the FreeBSD handbook at FreeBSD.org explains everything you need to know about setting FreeBSD in plain language, in ONE document. Alas, Windows does not come with a User Manual or anything similar.

FreeBSD is the world’s most reliable OS. That’s why sites like Yahoo and Microsoft themslves have used it to run their servers.

    11. I have checked it now. MagicISO, PowerISO, and UltraISO all recognize the image file as bootable so these three should work without a problem. So… for those of you having problems with the disc working; install one of these three programs, right click the Vista Recovery Disc iso image file, “Open With” and select the above program, insert your empty disc & click the burn icon.

    24. I previously deleted my recovery drive because I did not know what is was for and I wanted the extra hard drive space. I downloaded this, burned it fine, booted it up perfectly, but when it goes to repair I can’t do anything because there is no recovery drive. It just gives me an error saying that it couldn’t find a file on the D: drive (which now no longer exists because of the aforementioned deletion), and tells me to contact tech support. Any ideas?

i’ve got an acer 4920g laptop, and it won’t boot into windows.

    27. I’ve downloaded the file provided above but when I unzip it, I can’t find the .iso file. Can someone help? Thanks!

    28. I have tried to download both of the files but I got two tiny files of 19 and 11 KB respectively, could you be so kind to verify if the links is still working? thanks in advance, I need to recover my system and I have read a lot of good comments about those recovery disks,

      Thanks in advance

    29. This is a interesting article and very detailed information..Great job!! I will download the files and keep you posted with my progress…Thanks again

    30. This article just saved my bacon!

Anyone looking for a solution for the error:

      \Boot\BCD

      0xc000000f

should use this CD… it turned out that a couple of lines from the boot config had gone missing…. Recovery CD found the errors and suggested a fix… said fix used, re-started and immediately had Vista back up and running.

      Excellent.

    31. This torrent DOES NOT WORK!
Have to check it because it is missing the Install.wim file.
Everybody has downloaded SEVERAL TIMES AND BURN the CD SEVERAL TIMES.

EVERYTIME THE SAME THING: INSTALL.WIM IS MISSING!!!!!

    32. Hi, i have a HP Pavillion 9628nr that came with Vista and a Recovery Partition. I formatted the hard drive and created two disks leaving the Recovery Partition intact. Then i installed xp. It runs great. But I was wondering if i could go back to Vista and found out that there is no boot option to enter the recovery disk. Will this cd help me to get Vista installed from the recovery partition? Thanx!!

    33. hi, i’ve lost the third recovery disc…so now i can’t reinstall anything…the product to download functions like recovery discs?and does it work with all marks?

Step 3: Press F12 during bootup. Choose boot from CD/DVDRom

Step 4: Follow onscreen instructions and reload windows

If you dont have a Reinstallation CD/DVD, you can go to: http://www.oemsoftwaresource.com or for a replacement.

    35. Thank you for this amazing disk!
I just want to stress out, again, that I also had problems booting the cd after burning it with Nero. Instead, I downloaded ImgBurn and everything went great. You should consider of putting a note in the bottom of the article so people can be aware right in the beginning.

    36. Hi, I did everything here but when windows loads the files, stay in black screen for hours and the screen to repair windows don’t come out… I have sony vaio with vista home premium…. please…

    37. Hey Im in a predicament were my desktop isn’t showing up or anything.I don’t know where the original vista disk are and I tried downloading the two links at the top still no luck. I need help!

    38. I have downloaded the repair file as mentioned and am in the process of repairing Vista. It is now asking for the installation media drivers. When I hit the OK button it is directing me to the ‘X’ drive. Where are the drivers that it is asking for?

    39. First I would like to say thanks to you because I think this is a fantastic thing for vista user. This recovery disk is amazing and solves all recovery related problem of my system.
Before this recovery CD I was a user of recovery software named stellar phoenix windows recovery software. which helps me in recovery of files and folder and data from hard drive, floppy disk, CD, DVD, USB storage media .I have tried demo version of this software and for complete recovery of bought license key . But now I reach on my destination. I tried this cd on my old system and recover all data.

    40. Your ISO doesn’t contain SATA drivers. My Windows Vista isn’t being recognized on its HDD because the ISO doesn’t contain the necessary drivers to detect it.

    41. THIS FILE WORKS GREAT! SAVED EVERYTHING I HAD, NO LOST FILES.

NOTE TO ALL ASUS LAPTOP USERS: Your laptop will not automatically boot the cd, nor will the F12 key work. You MUST hold down the ESC key while the system restarts. I dont know why, but ASUS configured their systems that way. Hold down that ESC key and it will bring up the BOOT screen. Make sure you arrow down and choose the CD drive to boot from. Once you load the CD (with the .iso recovery file on it), just make sure you click on “Repair my computer”.

It worked perfectly and saved me from losing everything… because ASUS technical support will tell you that you must use their recovery CD to re-install Vista and lose everything… Forget that crap.

    42. I created a Vista Recovery Disc as instructed when I first got the my notebook (Acer) which I?ve used frequently until the last time I tried to do a system restore but installation just couldn?t complete because the disc was scratched? I?m not really a computer guru but I think that I wiped out my operating system and yet left without recovery disc. I downloaded the file mentioned above (Windows Vista Recovery Disc) hoping that it?d help but it just wouldn?t work for me ? I booted from the CD and it started to load approximately 80% before it failed, it turned out that some files had gone missing. . Did I perhaps not burn the disc properly, because I just double-clicked on the file I downloaded and hit the ?burn? tab?
What do you guys suggest I do?
