Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    2. I followed all the directions. However, once windows finishes loading all the files from the cd, all I get is a blank screen with a white cursor. What am I doing wrong? Help please!

    3. I would like to tell everyone about the FREE Paragon Backup Express. I do not work for them in any way, but I love this program and it’s free and it may just save you if you have a crash on your computer. You can use Backup Express to make an Image of your C drive and put it on an external drive so that if and when your computer dies or gets infected you can just replace it with the Backup Express image.
Everyone should have an image of their C drive, to back up to in case you need it!

    4. Well it didn’t work – ran two checks for errors, said it couldn’t find any.
Ran the full range of functions one after the other, but keep getting booted to a black screen with nothing on it, then it starts all over again. Looping continuously in boot up mode.

    5. i had vista in ma laptop.due to few reasons i removed it and put XP.now i want it back,so i used your software.when i tried to setup it,i got a massage asking for a file “E:\sources\install.wim.”please help me on this.thank you

    6. I have a toshiba A300 which was originally installed with the vista OEM and has the HDDRecovery partition on there. Since purchasing I returned to windows XP for reasons of compatibility to my pre-purchased softs etc. Now that the drivers and updates are available for all my softs regarding vista I want to return the machine to its factory default OS…Vista.
But, all recovery attempts fail. The back up disks don’t load and the HDDRecovery drive is there but unattainable.
I downloaded the image that you have so kindly supplied here, mounted image onto disc as requested using imgburn and followed the instructions to the letter, and all I get is a flashing curser in the top left hand corner, when I reboot.
Also I have loaded up ubuntu from disc and used its drive reading capabilities to access the hidden recovery drive and have copied that drive to a backup external harddrive…and still I don’t know what else I am suppossed to do to get the factory default OS of Vista up and running and recovered to my machine.
      HELP!

    7. hi
      i´m having problems
when i attempt to boot it says bootmgr is missing

    8. Thanks Computer Guru!!!
Ok, over kill with the “!” I know 🙂
But a seriously fantastic fix just the same.
One of our cats decided that because it’s been a bit cold tonight, it should sleep on my laptop. The laptop was going at full tilt attempting to crack a password I lost last week, and when I found it, it was off. Dead as a door nail. Upon attempting to start it I got the vista black boot screen of death (VBBSOD?).
A very quick search found this site, and within a few hours (had to d/l and install a torrent client, ImgBurn and the ISO file, hook up a CD burner [4 HDD were installed on IDE] and burn the image to disk on our desktop), I have my laptop back up and running!
      Great work m8.
      Your a freaking legend.
If your ever in far north Queensland, I’ll buy you a beer or three. (:
      Cheers!!!

    9. Wow,thanks so much for this! never need to use a recovery tool before, wish u have a donation link some were so we can donate! 🙂

    10. I haven’t used it, but glad to have it in my arsenal, just in case! Thanks!

    11. Does this work even though Dell and HP tattoo their BIOS to run only with the recovery disk specific to that model of PC? I have a Slimline s3300f and have Vista Ultimate which I installed 5 times and all 5 times I went from the desktop to the BSOD.

    12. Can anyone help? I accidentally pressed the start up button when the cpu was in the process of shutting down. When trying to reboot my cpu, it now doesn?t start up, there?s just a black screen. Would the recovery disk solve my problem? Thank you in advance for help!

    13. Now that the real Vista SP2 has been released, do these recovery disks need to be updated for SP2? I can confirm that they do not complain about being applied to an intact SP2 system, but that’s not the same thing as saying there’s no harm.

    14. So my computer wouldn’t boot because of the missing file wimlib.sys, so I downloaded this, burned it to an CD and booted it on the laptop in question. It looks like its main purpose was to install windows, but I selected ‘Repair my computer’ which was at the bottom. It corrected wimlib.sys, but now the computer won’t boot because of the missing PSHED.DLL and this recovery CD will not fix it. Where are the other utilities such as system restore.

    15. Thank You. After recovering partition with Acronis True Image I had cyclic rebooting. This CD resolved my problem. Thank you again! 🙂

    16. I was restoring to a restore point on my vista windows. Now nothing will come up. Its a blank screen with my cursor. I tried all the safe modes, debugger, last known good conf, but nothing is working. I can hit the shift butten five times and i do get the pop up but nothing else seems to work. i cant even get any icons at all because of this stupid restore. What do i do? i dont have a reboot disc or cant download anything. please help me.

    17. Can this be used with windows xp?? I have a sony vaio pcv-rs620g, it crased while i was running an anti-virus scan and now i can’t run task manager, there’s no taskbar, and my desktop is blank. and the problem is also present in safe mode. i tried running disc-wiping software but i got error messages. …..help?

    18. Hey…I downloaded the Vista 32 bit for my brother’s Dell Inspiron 1501. When I loaded the disc and pressed F12 to boot from CD-Rom nothing happens and it continues to load the system until it gets to the desktop. I have tried using the F8 option with the built-in Repair utility but it does not work. He does not have the recovery CDs because none came with the lappy. I am not sure what to do anymore. In the “Advanced Booting Menu” it gives me the option to “Repair My Computer” but nothing happens after I press it. I have also tried the CTRL + F11 method and nothing. I am beginning to wonder if his Repair Partition is corrupt or got deleted. How much space is that supposed to take from your HD? About 10GB? I think it said 90% of the Recovery D: drive was free…soo, I am not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    19. Could anyone let me know if this will erase my personal files or not. I just got the blue screen of death and know it can be fixed with a restore or a .dll, but I can’t even boot to the desktop to perform any actions. I really can’t afford to loose my documents. Thanks for the link and the post by the way!!

    20. I had used my recovery disk but when I did all the settings Microsoft word, access, power point…. there all were not there

    21. I need to use a bootable disc to restore my computer to an earlier working state. I tried using this image and I got to the part where I can click on “System Restore” at the “System Recovery Options” window, but as I click on these option I get a message that says “The wizard is already running and the program will now close” and then it takes me back to the previous screen. I have a tutorial of how to do the system recovery and I know what I’m suppose to do. Can you tell me if this disc can be used for this or am I using the wrong disc? If so, please tell me where can I get a bootable disc that allows me to restore my computer. I use Vista Enterprise and used a Vista Enterprise Upgrade disc that is why I can not use it as boot up. Thanks for your help.

    22. I tryed the link for the 32 bit system but i downloaded it fine and it burnt to a dvd fine the problem i face is that a lot of files are missing from this program,it only lets you go as far as the first screen and the tells you cannot go on missing files from drive d.

    24. Hi:

    26. Hi Guys. I have d/loaded this recovery disk and although I can get to the options, It does not boot up my machine back to vista. I get the options shown as per. ie System restore, repair etc, but thats it. I have tried all these. But my machine goes back to the black screen with the commands – Read disk error press ctrl alt del to restart. Is this disk just a few files to allow me to reinstall vista with the vista install disk or should my machine boot up back to what it uses to be ie windows vista. Thanks

    27. Is there a way to know that all of the files appeared on your bootable disk from above?

    28. Hello, I have a hp pavilion dv6700 that is Windows Vista, the computer was bought in September 2008.

Randomly the other day I first got the *** STOP: 0x0000C1F5.

Although I am instructed to get into Safe mode and Disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software, whatever pathway I chose to take I always end up with that BSOD.

I don’t have any disc with Vista Recovery. I have tried to download it as instructed but there don’t appear to be any sources available for this to be currently successful. Any help as to how I could recover what is currently stored as well as resurrecting my computer would be greatly appreciated.

    29. When i turn on computer, sometimes it boots up from windows xp. And goes into acer arcade deluxe, allthough my laptop has vista and not xp installed. This gets rather annoying after a while. I have seen several forums with same problem. i have contacted Acer and they told me first to run recovery dvd. That is done and problems are still there. Now they want me to send in my computer for reinstallation of the preinstalled version. My computer is only 2 months old. Do this program stop it booting to xp instead of vista? Or should i sent it back to acer?

    30. Hello,

Greetings everyone who is unlucky enough to have a computer afflicted with this peculiar problem. I had downloaded some fantastic software called Winamp which in the past worked well with Windows ME (my personal favorite,) and Windows XP. Well, I downloaded Winamp for Vista, the computer was turned off, and then back on later only to find:

      File: \Boot\Bcd
      Status: 0xc000000f
Info: An error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data

After being incredibly pissed off at Microsoft because though they are way smarter than I am at software engineering, many people are having this very same problem.

Here are some far simpler instructions on how to fix the problem. This torrent download (my first ever) contains these three files:

      boot 3.27 MB
      sources 116 MB
      bootmgr 325 kB

First 1.) Click the link to download using BitTorrent

2.) Once finished, in BitTorrent, click on ‘completed’ in the left sidebar.
      3.) Right-click on ‘Vista_Recovery_Disk.iso’ Select ‘Open’

This should invoke the disk writing software already installed on your computer. Write the disk and take it and go to put it in the drive of the problematic computer after you have turned it on. Turn it off, and back on again. PLEASE MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOU CHOOSE TO FIX/REPAIR THE COMPUTER INSTEAD OF RE-INSTALLING WINDOWS VISTA!

If you do not have a compact disk drive installed on your computer, you can use a USB thumb drive (over 800 MB available space for this particular software.) You can change the order of the way that your computer commences to boot up. Computers differ and F2, F8, F12 seem popular with the computer manfacturers. Just hold one of these buttons as the computer starts up. Save the data from BitTorrent to a USB thumb drive. MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOU CHOOSE TO FIX/REPAIR THE COMPUTER INSTEAD OF RE-INSTALLING WINDOWS VISTA!

By the way, Winamp works great. Long live LaunchCast!

    31. Hi.

I’ve got a working Vista machine here, and one that’s not working at all. There’s no explainable reason as to why that should be, but I’m thinking of re-installing the GUI for the not working one. That would be an Acer extensa 5620Z with an Intel Pentium dc T2390 processor.

I downloaded the image you have here, burned it on a DVD so that I could boot the other computer form it it and do the installing all over again. The windows is genuine and all. After asking the registration key thought, it claims, that there’s no certain file “E:\source\install.wim” on the DVD. I checked, and it never appeared on the image, which I still have on this other computer. could it be, that I’ve gotten a failed download, though it showed 100%, or is the reinstallment lacking?

I’ve heard rumours, that Acer has been making it hard for us in the past too, but still, I read some comments here, and quite a lot of people seemed to get theirs done. If you didn’t mind at least pming me. Thanks.

      -Tuomas–

    32. Also, what does it actually mean, that while repairing my windows, it claims, that my windows is of a different version, while it should be Vista x64, and this one is made for vista, isn’t it?

    33. hi
i was creating partitions with paragon partion manager and my laptop got hung up so i had to restart it and now it is not even startin its askin for a recovery disk will dis work

    34. I’ve had this new ASUS G50Vt-A2 15.4″ Vista Home Premium laptop since 3/30/09. This machine comes with software called “Lifeframe”, which is used by the 2 megapixel onboard video camera. This laptop is a “higher end” gaming laptop similar to an AlienWare M15 but for thousands less than its Dell counterpart. It has 2 eSata 320 Gig hard drives in it. I’m not a gamer: I like this machine because of its raw compute capacity and its top of the line Nvidia graphics card. I use it for work and software development. However, after 6 weeks, I decided to update the downlevel Lifeframe video camera software and upon completion DEFRAG drive # 1 (C Drive). The DEFRAG did nothing: It just sat there. So, I decided to do a CHDKDSK…. still nothing. I found references to the SFC utility from Microshaft. I ran it only to discover that “AUTOCHK.EXEC” – the CHKDSK proram – had somehow developed a “hash error”. All of the forum discussions seemed to suggest that I should replace it as it’s broken. Howver, I did call ASUS, and the tech support guy, Edward, said, “We don’t support this, but you should download the torrent file for the Vista Recovery disc. It may very well allow you to run CHKDSK.” He was SO, SO “on point”, “correct”, and bingo: I’m back again.

This CD is worth a MINT!

I called ASUS and spoke to his manager to thank him for his “off the record” recommendation. I’ve spoken to ASUS about their HORRIBLE driver, bios, and tool download site. The documentation is pathetic and inexcusably maintained and supported. ASUS should hold its head in shame! IT CAN’T BEGIN to shine a candle to the content on Lenovo’s site – the precedent for which was set by IBM PSP years ago for the ThinkPads. I also told ASUS, “YOU SHOULD OFFER THE VISTA DISCS – even at a nominal cost less than $50.” I own the license – not ASUS – for this image. I should be entitled to it. AlienWare offers the discs for about $45 when you buy your machine. ASUS does not. Their recovery discs only WIPE and reimage your hard drive(s). UNACCEPTABLE by any account.

Why does the user community always have to clean up the mess of the manufacturers? Do we as consumers have a forum to compel these manufacturers to supply it? I think so. It’s called ‘class action’. I think it’s time we used our collective bargaining power to bring about a customer-focused and service-oriented shift to the software licensee.

    35. Hey, I have a couple questions…

      1. I don’t have a blank cd so can I put it on a USB stick and use that instead? if so tell me how please.

      2. I need to completely reinstall windows vista 32 bit and I was wondering does it delete ALL of my files and everything on the computer[restoring to factory defaults?]

    36. Hey all
I had windows Vista home premium, then installed vista ultimate thinking it would be better. It became worse and l8er i found out my laptop only functions with home pre -.-.
I wanted to know if this file can be useful.
      I already tried using it.
Tell me if the steps i took were right:
      1-Download 32bit file(my windows is vista ult. 32bit)
2-burn it using alcohol on the disc.
3-check if the file with the name exactly “Vista_Recovery_Disc.iso” is present in the CD.
4-keep the CD in the floppy and restart.
5-wait and let it bot itself -.-
^^ ^^ ^^ this is where nothing happens and windows stars normally.

I restarted waited for something to show up, but windows started normally.
i restarted again clicking F11, nothing came -.-.
Restarted clicking F8, i saw bunch of stuff, then i chose one that said something about recovery.
then some stuff came up, and then again windows started normally.
Please help me, what should i do?
      =(.
My laptop is HP pavillion dv2690

    37. So I reformatted my computer with Ubuntu as the operating system after a massive crash… of course my recovery partition is pretty much useless using Ubuntu because they didn’t include the recovery disk creation software on the partition itself… real useful, Gateway.

Now that I wiped Vista, I assume this recovery disk is useless. Is that the case?

    38. why WHY do people put files like these as torrent… unreliable at best. This day in age just find a place to perma-host a 120 meg file guys come on what gives

    39. thank goodness for people with brains and mirrors….

torrents are not hip cool or reliable.. dont use them
