Disk for recovery & repair
If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.
Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.
Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.
It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.
The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.
The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

Hi,
I downloaded the iso and verified it. I have burnt it to disc using imgburn. When boot off it, it says it is loading files with the white progress bar. This seems to complete and it shows the normal windows splash page. I then have a black screen while the hard drive seems to be working away. A cursor then appears with a blue background but no options available. Do you have any suggestions?
Adam
Thank you!
It took me 3 1/2 hours to do it but the point is, i am not a computer guru but i DID IT! It took two failed CD’s…one didn’t work; one PARTLY got me there; and the third one worked. Yep, people, follow these instuctions to the TEE! And it will work!
I downloaded and extracted the folders, but where is the ISO ?

After keying the product key in, i get an error message e:\sources\install.wim do not exist.

I’ve used Imgburn and MagicIso to burn the recovery disk (32 bit), but everytime I get past the windows green-bar loading green; the screen freezes at a black screen, NO mouse, nothing. I’ve tested the disks on my XP machine and they boot fine. Its just on my vista laptop it constantly freezes at the black screen. Can anyone provide any assistance?
Do you have to back up files before doing this? Will I have to reinstall all my programs? When it boots from the DVD a screen comes up asking me which language to install. I don’t want to loose files.
Thank you very much sir

Hi, guys!
Yahoo Messenger tricked me into receiving a file from a chat, a fake chat, and Windows Defender told me there was a threat. I didn’t open it. Closed the computer and now it won’t boot up. All I get is a blue screen with a movable mouse. 🙁
I downloaded and successfully copied the Recovery Files, twice, just in case. I have a Compaq Presario CQ50. I changed the boot process to DVD/CD first, but I get the same: a blue screen with a mouse.
Can anyone help?
Thank you! You saved my life!

Hey.. i have a question..
after i’ve tried to boot from the recovery disc.. it has directed me to the windows setup… n it prompted me to choose either to boot with safe mode, safe mode with networking or safe mode with command prompt.. i’m rather clueless of which to choose.. can anyone pls help… would really appreciate your help.. thanks in advance…:)
Hi.. I have a question here…
I’ve tried using the recovery disc and after i clicked the repair the computer.. the system prompted me for system restore… however.. it (system restore) has been running for like more than four hours or so… is that normal? Or does that mean that i’m using the wrong Bit disc (because i’m using the 32-Bit)?
Would appreciate if anyone can help… Thanks in advance..:)
Thanks a lot you guys! that was very helpful.
Hi,
I dl Vista x64 recovery, but the Md5 checksum isn’t listed here or anywhere else. Mine was: 6a2c38312c5391d39cc0d429a1f123a3
Could you confirm, please?
Thanks a lot!
Downloading via bittorrent is guaranteed to be corruption-free. Your bittorrent client automatically checks the hashes.
i getting a wim install missing mesagge is it i need to renistall vista?
thank you.
just wondering? if utorrent checks the hash and guarantees it’s correct, why does the hash number under the general tab in utorrent differ from what winMD5sum detects. for instance, the vista recovery iso’s hash is aff5ceef6dbf202cc1beb9fc81e8d02b which is the same as what Computer Guru states, utorrents tab says something completely different? i hope that makes sense to some1 as I’m not to good at this kind of thing? anyway thanks for ur help, this seems like a really good site. i will let you know how the vista recovery goes! thanks again
The hash that uTorrent shows is the torrent hash, not the MD5 hash 🙂
There are many different types of hashes, all more or less reliable for this purpose… But you need to make sure you’re comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges.
Alright i guess i’ll see if it works…thanks.
hi…
i have successfully down load this via imgburn… then i insert, and it says click any key..then came up the screen of install bla bla bla, i select repair… then it came the window repair start up… then… it shut down… so i turn on the pc again but the cd is still in, so it asked again to select any key for the disc to run, before i could do that straight away the ‘restore…’ or start window normally… so i click the restore… as it repairing.. it says “start up cannot be repair” ….what should i do? do i took the cd out or run the cd again??
Thanks! It worked well. I have a Lenovo Y410 that i was about to recycle until i saw your recommendations. I tried it out and it work just fine, fast, secure and easy.
Thank you very much

Please can someone tell me what o do I really dont want to reformat.
“Again, for the last time:
If you get an install.wim error, it’s because you’re trying to install Vista with this CD. That’s not allowed. You need to use the “Repair your computer” link on the screen before.”
I need help with this problem eerytime I put in the CD it comes up wtih this error: install.vim missing beofre I can get the repair option. And despite alot of people puttin this up as a problem you have just thought that it ou fault for trying to instal windows. Would someone please let me know the way to fix this problem.

Thank you for restoring my computer! Your startup disc was very helpful. Everything appears to be in working order now!
Thanks helped alot, sorted my office pc problems.
Your awesome, I got that winload.exe corrupted error, and your site fixed it by following these instructions!
Hey guys… after spending a lot of time reading through the forum, I have found a problem I can’t seem to fix. My Gateway laptop recently had system registry errors due to corrupt files. Like many, Vista was installed on the machine when I purchased it and I had no recovery CD. I followed the steps and have burnt a 32-bit CD to begin restorations.
However, when I boot from the CD, it loads the Window’s files completely. Then it continues to a loading screen with just a green loading bar for Windows. Shortly after, the screen is black and my computer seems to have quit processing. The only related post I have found is:

I’ve used Imgburn and MagicIso to burn the recovery disk (32 bit), but everytime I get past the windows green-bar loading green; the screen freezes at a black screen, NO mouse, nothing. I’ve tested the disks on my XP machine and they boot fine. Its just on my vista laptop it constantly freezes at the black screen. Can anyone provide any assistance?
I did not see any solutions to Gray’s problem in this post and am having a difficult time searching for related posts. If anyone can assist me, I would greatly appreciate it.
To clarify, I have found images on your website that can better assist you in knowing the problems I am dealing with. On the Windos Vista Installation page (found at http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/Installing+Windows+Vista), I get the first 3 black screens shown that load the Windows files.
However, the problem is that when the third image is done, the setup fails to continue onward to the colorful Language Select screen. The screen is just black, stuck in between the two stages.
Is this a problem with the disc I am burning? As far as I know, problems burning the ISO file to a disc will result in other problems, such as the disc not being recognized or not loading the Windows files. I do not want to keep burning additional CD’s if this is not the problem.
With that being said, could this mean that my hard drive is faulty or damaged, since the files seem to load from the disc but fail to apply to the hard drive?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, especially the ones that will not run me in circles all day. 😛
this wont work for me. I changed the BIOS to run CD first but then it just starts the hard drive. Could it be because i burnt the CD through a mac?
Thank you so much, this was really helpfull, you saved me. keep on helping people THAnK YOU
I use grub so I can get on ubuntu anf vista, will that have any effect on this disk?
hello
My computer crashed for the first time and right on Christmas day and also the day my friends decided to throw a birthday party for me(my b-day is the 26th) so I really need a miracle for me
I will address the problem so I don’t have to find out if the disc works or not
I wanted to make a video for youtube to see how I roll so I downloaded an editing system and an audio recorder and then I tried putting it on youtube but it wouldn’t work so I gave up. Then I played a game and it froze. I tried doing every thing I usually do when a game freezes but that didn’t work. I tried turning off my computer but it wouldn’t. Then I pulled the plug and put it back in. It worked and it did all that mandatory stuff for Vista. I tried my game again and then I got the blue screen of death. It restarted my computer and it got stuck on the window’s loading screen. Again I pulled the plug and restarted it but a blue screen came up with just the mouse. I turned off my computer but it ended up on the black screen this time and every time I turn it off, it goes back to it and I can’t do anything. I am speaking from a different computer
so help plz
