Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    36. this seems to be really useful when Vista cannot boot, but since I’m a newb I have some questions:
1.-the iso file can be used with any version of Windows Vista ex: Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, etc?
2.- Will this erase or affect in some way my documents, pics, music, etc.?
3.-Will this repair any damage cause for a virus, rootkit, malware, etc. that prevents vista to boot?
      lots of thanks in advance

    37. @LA-dude:

      > 1.-the iso file can be used with any version of Windows Vista ex: Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, etc?

Yes. It alters the boot record only, which is the same for all versions.

      > 2.- Will this erase or affect in some way my documents, pics, music, etc.?

No, it makes no other filesystem changes. Only the “Repair Installation” selection works. You can’t install from this CDROM or perform any other functions.

      > 3.-Will this repair any damage cause for a virus, rootkit, malware, etc. that prevents vista to boot?

It will repair the boot record, overwriting whatever was there, which includes a virus. However, if you had a virus modify your boot record, then it still resides on the filesystem, and will continue to infect your system. It will not detect and cleanse viruses or spyware from your system.

For scanning your entire filesystem for malicious code, download this:

      http://www.avg.com/us-en/226386

It’s a free rescue CDROM built for virus scanning and is very effective. Burn it to a CDROM, and boot from it. It will start a rescue mode where you can connect to the Internet and download the latest virus signatures and then scan your entire computer for viruses.

    38. I have browsed through years and years of comments, and I just want to get some clarification regarding this recovery disc. I am looking for a way to repair my registry. I have laptop (HP DV6000) which is about two and half years old and running Vista 32 bit. The laptop won’t boot up. I made and used the recovery disc following the instructions referenced here, but when I boot to this disc, all that I get is a black screen with a large white cursor. Is this disc not intended for Vista registry repairs? When I was using Windows 98, registry errors were not that big of a deal to repair, but with Vista, I’m stumped! Thanks! ~Don
