Disk for recovery & repair
If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.
Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.
Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.
It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.
The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.
The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

What if I already formatted the drive and deleted all partitions? I did this to install another OS, but now I want to go back… Any ideas? I have the OEM serial number that is attached to the PC tower. It is an emachines computer.
Computer Guru:
where did you find the program , crc , that will scan this iso file to provide the hash number??
thank you. james
Before i was bored with Windows vista, whereby i have to reinstall Vista whenever i encounter systematic error, till when i came across neosmart vista recovery disc through techrepublic. I am highly impressed, and wish to get more from you.
I’m really glad I found this.
Quick question, though: will this upgrade my XP (I had Vista but removed it, now I need to restore Vista to use my warranty) or do I have to format and clean install?
Either works for me, I just would like some pointers to getting Vista up and running before I send my laptop back to HP.
Hi,
I have been dealing with a problem on my vista(home)for some 3 weeks now,it just suddenly started having problems with opening windows explorer files, with a cycle of windows explorer is not responding then windows explorer is restarting and in few sec back to the not responding so i can do anything,i cant even reach the recovery disc partition without having the same problem opening that part itself,in a bid to attempt to fix this i tried re-installing the operating sysytem but this caused my recovery partion to be full and now i cant install needed programmes,so i’m wondering if this recovery download can work for this
Thanks for this altruistic download it has just saved me parting with a lot of cash for a technician.
After suffering five or six mini power outages in succession my Vista Ultimate PC would not boot up I just got an error Oxc000000f windows\system32\winload.exe missing or corrupted.
The rescue disc fixed everything in minutes.
Thanks again,
James.
I downloaded the torrent version. It showed a size of 20KB instead of 120MB. Any ideas? Thanks.
You should all switch to UBUNTU and life will be much better for all.
Hello,
I updatede my vista with windows update causing it to go in an endless loop of rebooting
“Vista constantly rebooting after this week’s updates – “Configuring updates stage 3 of 3″”
Took the visa recovery and was able to restore my vista else it would have costed me 300$ for a reinstall.
Thanks Computer Guru.
Thanks
Rupesh.
Hi I bought a Vista Home Premium upgrade disk to upgrade from XP. If I needed to recover my system would I be able to use this DVD download or would I have to reinstall XP from the original recovery disk supplied with my laptop and then use the Home Premium upgrade disk again to reinstate Vista?
Thanks
Larry, you’ll need to open the .torrent file with a bittorrent client like µTorrent: http://utorrent.com/
Hey Guys.
I downloaded the ISO and wrote it to a CD, configured my BIOS or whatever so that it would boot from CD/DVD, got a prompt that told me to “Press any key to boot from CD”, had a bar across the bottom that said “Windows is loading files” and then BAM….black screen with a cursor and no more.
Anybody know what the problem might be?
And if its of any help its an Acer Aspire Laptop.
Can someone help me please i did all of this. I burned this to a cd and put cd rom first in the boot order and I don’t get any message like “Press any key to boot from CD…”. I dont think it’s the cd because i tried the one that came with the machine and this. Please help.

I was SOO hoping that the boor disk would solve my problem, but perhaps it is not vista that is the issue. I am running Vista home premium and woke up to the BSOD with error message 0X0000c1f5. The additional comments suggest i uninstall new hardware (none installed) and clear memory cache and shaowing (not an option in my BIOS). I was able to remove the drive and copy all of the data off of it, but without back up disks, i have not wiped it. The boot disk loaded the windows files but then the same error message came up. Anyone have any experience with thie error message?
Is it possible to restore a drive in an external drive case to an earlier point?
thanks.
Brian
this program is great laptop was restarting after 10 seconds after installing alcohol 120 couldnt do anything as no restore disk but thanks to this site it now works again many thanks
A bit of advice regarding CD/DVD burning — S L O W – D O W N the burn speed to about 1/2 the maximum speed. This usually produces more reliable results. Also, make sure to check your CRC before you burn. Any little glich while you’re downloading can mess up the whole ISO.
–Good luck!
To Brian… Check your memory. Loose conection probably, remove them and stick them back in securely. Still having problems, use a pencil erasure to lightly polish the contacts before replacing.
Hi Fred,
If you are burning using Nero then that might be why it is not bootable as it happened to me and a few other people previously. Try downloading ImgBurn (link at top in this site) and then burn it.
cool! 🙂
but still i am with win XP.
But thanks, will be useful when i got vista.:)
i have actually seen vista… but still waiting for somethings to resolved.
Techdudes
Fred,
The reason you dont see “Boot from CD or DVD” is because your laptop isnt configured to do so.
When you see the ACER logo at the start, press F2 to go to the Configuration screen.
Then go to the BIOS tab and make sure that the name of the DVD drive is at the top of the list you see(by using either F5/F6 to move it to the top).
Then go to Save and Exit and your computer should restart and give you the “Boot from CD or DVD” prompt.
Hopefully that helps
After unsuceesfully contacting acer I can’t seem to find a way to undowngrade my laptop.
I downgraded it to xp. Now I have decide i wish to dual boot vista and xp. My system came preinstalled with vista home basic. I low level formated it and installed xp. Can i use this disc image to reinstall vista? If not do you have any suggestions for me.
Thanks Natedog
I downloaded this file to ‘recover’ my laptop and it loads through all the screens asking for a serial code and info about the laptop and then it shows that there’s a component error and there’s part of the file missing. So this disc does not work…Any advice? I also ordered a disc from Ebay, however this does nothing at all, doesn’t go past the black screen after the Acer screen loads…that’s as far as I can get.
Email me, dancergirl86@googlemail.com
Thanks

Guru your the man! sorted my computer last night with your disk save me having to get vista for £150 + need my computer in a hurry as I was travelling for work and did not have my disks with me… worked first time the only thing that caught me of guard was that Vista was convinced that my copy was not genuine so make sure you have a copy of your licence key as vista will let you log-in but wont let you do nothing else on your system until you resolve this issue….
After failing night after night to re-install the Vista OS I downloaded, of course w/o the installation disk, I finally found the 1 website out of 200+ i checked that actually had instructions to create a disc to do a clean install!!! All you need are the 3 files…
1. boot.wim (116 MB)
2. install.wim (2.24 GB)
3. X13-49120.exe (73.7 MB)
Which can be found there as well.
hopefully this will save you the stress I had to endure to find it. I have over 10 “recovery disks” that I burned, on my desk which as I found out were USELESS!!! after finding this sight, I had the full Installation disk in 15 minutes. I only wasted 3 nights, close to 20 hours searching for it. Here is the site, good luck!! http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/05/08/ windows-vista-free-direct-download-link/
In my honest opinion I can’t believe the amount of people relying on someone else’s attempt to recover pc’s and laptops.
It’s a waste of time and causes too many problems.
The best thing to do when you buy a new computer with an operating system on it is to make a recovery disk/disk’s yourself.
Get something like Symantec Ghost or Acronis Trueimage.
These 2 programs are brilliant and do all the work.
You can install the programs you want and save the whole thing as a bootable image of the Hard Drive, including the operating system on to either 1,2,3,4 or as many CD’s/DVD’s as it needs.
Then you just put the first one in and boot it up and follow the instructions.
It will restore the pc to exactly as it was when you made the disks.
If you have’nt installed anything it will restore it back to how it was the day you bought it.
Simple and no messing about, and you know that it’s only your stuff and nothing added from someone else’s files. If you loose all your stuff after using someone else recovery disks you only have yourself to blame. How important is your data?
Hi, i have new HP HDX9130EO try to install XP but cant find drivers, so deside return to Vista, ofcose recovery CD dont have 🙁 all weekend try return to preinstaled Vista and not succesfull – F11 not work, as i imaging some hp stuf was in mbr and XP instalation replace it, so now i try to some how find the way to restore my laptop, and try to use you image, but it not work – black skreen – do nothing 🙁 any idea?
Hi!
The tool is just fine. It solved my problem withou losing data. But I’ve noticed it changed my ‘Product key’ number. I had to go to the Control Panel and re-type my correct Product Key.
Thanks for your help!
Vista Nightmares
Thanks for links! It helps to install Vista, no try to found all needed drivers!
P.S. then i burn this subj. image with imgburn – its start work, burned by nero (2 cd, 1 dvd) not start 🙁
I wonder if there might be something wrong with the image here. Since so many people were having trouble and a friend of mine locally had the same trouble, i made the WinRE myself and it worked for him where this one didnt. The one i created was 141mb in size tho. Not 120.
downloaded files and recorded to disc with Active ISO Burner which is a free download from http://www.download.com/Active-ISO-Burner/3000-2646_4-10602452.html (which seems fine) as I am not too happy with the offering from HP which returns only to factory settings – however I have made an HP recovery disk from the partition … just in case.
THIS DOESN’T WORK!
I’ve downloaded this file burnt it using numerous burners and still get a message saying something along the lines of “(blah blah blah) could not find the file F:\Sources\Intall.wim”
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi,
I have a problem with Vista.
My computer hangs up on start up. It gets past the Windows windos, 2 seconds into the Vista window and screen goes black. Mouse pointer is there and moveable, but nothing else happens.
I downloaded Recovery CD and booted from that. I got into diagnostics but could not make any progress. System recovery gave same error message whichever point I select…not all files etc, try another point.
Start up repair achieves nothing,
Command prompt shows computer working from X drive !!
Any suggestions?
Would purchase of full dvd work? or is there some other problem.
Thanks in advance for any help
I downloaded both files at the top of this page. Using ImgBurn I burned 2 CDs. Neither will boot on my laptop. Yes, CD is before hard drive in the boot order.
There were no error messages. The computer just goes to the Vista login screen.
The Torrent file could not be burned by ImgBurn. Said it is not a valid file type or some such. I did change the name and took off the Torrent at the end.
Thanks
Mary
P. S. Go to http://www.terabyteunlimited.com and check out their imaging products. I find them more reliable than Symantec’s Ghost or Acronis True Image. There is a Newsgroup where you can get good tech support. You can use USB, Firewire and internal devices. It can burn to all types of DVD plus CDs.
There is also a program called BootIt Now NG that does a lot of what Partition Magic used to do. It is even more flexible as a boot manager.
Create your own images so you can go back to a good state from a few days ago providing you image regularly.
webguru=====I have a lenovo running vista-I tied to use paragon to clean up my hard disk. It crashed on defrag leaving me an apparently corrupt drive C file structure. When I try to boot I just get a blinking cursor-downloaded & burned the recovery disk & it booted Ok =ran the part that supposedly fixes boot/startup issues but it says I have recently installed camera or music player & to disconnect it. I don?t have anything like that-so im stuck-should I use chkdsk to fix the file structure? Help??

I used NTI CD Maker that came with my laptop with Bootable CD checked to burn the ISO. It boots and goes to the repair menu. I did not click further since my system is working OK.
This could prove useful although since I have System Restore turned off I am not sure how far I would get using it.
Mary
I was able to get a bootable CD using the burning program on my laptop, NTI CD-Maker. I checked Bootable CD, then burned the ISO.
It booted into the repair menu OK.
Mary
Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!!! This is exactly what I needed after spending 3 1/2 hours on the phone with Compaq trying to convince them that my laptop’s wireless card under warrenty was bad. Used an older copy of Ghost to create a clone of my hard drive since it is configured with quite a few programs, and then followed HP’s advice to restore the Windows install back to factory just in case it was a driver issue. That didn’t help the wireless card come back to life. I cloned the drive back only to get the file corrupt or missing winlogin.exe error. I didn’t know MS changed the way that they handle the boot sector, and the older Ghost version didn’t handle it correctly. This image had the error fixed in 5 seconds flat.
Thank you for hosting a copy of this!
Just purchased a HP Pavilion dv9000 hours ago. Started it up and got to a screen where the only thing I could do was set up my Ease of Access options. Obviously, I tried to recover from the recovery partition but the result was the same. I’ve been trying to download the recovery disc from this site but it freezes up at various points. My desktop is running XP but that shouldn’t cause a problem should it?
If the download is hanging, use the torrent version.
Thanks everyone. My laptop auto-downloaded some Vista update files and crashed in the middle of the configurations. I bought Symantec’s System Works, 360; Microsoft Windows Live OneCare, and Acronis True Image Home. After about $200 and an hour trying to reboot from those, nothing would do the trick. I found this website and did exactly as told, from another computer (to download and burn the CD), and 5 minutes later everything was repaired, restored. Could I sue Toshiba laptop division for being so negligent, so uncaring about its customers? It should know and MUST know that the Repair CD is essential, more than 100 softwares it included in the Restore Disks (which has everything except this Repair feature!) which are nothing more than a bunch of craps?
Let’s be honest, this simple CD is more valuable than any stupid “utilities” softwares on the selves of any computer stores.
Hey guys. AWESOME disc. Really beneficial (even though it didn’t restore stuff for me due to a virus). I just wanted to know if anyone can put up the link to Microsofts page where I can get a Vista Recovery disk for my own systerm so I can restore it to factory settings? Or are there torrents for this as well? Any help would be great! Thanks guys hutton.jason@yahoo.com
Microsoft does not have a complete restore disk. That should come from your computer manufacturer. If you can’t get on the computer, you need to call HP Support.
HP had an option with XP so you can create a bootable CD/DVD in their restore settings. I would do that as soon as possible. Check your instructions for your laptop since I know Acer has a similar option on my Vista notebook. Of course, you want a working system to do that.
The files you download here are part of the Vista System folder. If you cannot access Vista itself, this is one way to fix problems.

Please help, It seem that a lot of people have success with this image, i have not. My problem is that after i have keyed the activationcode in, I get an error message”e:\sources\install.wim” do not exist, and when i look on the disk there is a boot.wim firle but no install.wim. What am i doing wrong?
Help please
It seems like a lot of people get good use of this image, i do not.
After keying the product key in, i get an error message e:\sources\install.wim do not exist.
And when i look on the disk there is no install.wim only a boot.wim.
What am i doing wrong.
I have given up with trying to repair system and have bought a system disk to do a complete installation
yeah I tried recovery disk yet my problem is that it always crashes, when at the windows vista load screen.
It seems we are all having similar problems. Vista Home Pro crashed on me, and the Hewlett Packard partition drive did NOT allow me to repair the fault. I had no recovery disks (my fault!) and so I tried to restore to factory defaults. That also did not work. Then I stumbled on this forum and decided to create your recovery disk. It created it fine, but then I was presented with the install.wmi issue (not on the recovery disk). I formatted my C: using a command prompt, and tried to load XP. No Luck. I then took note of Vista Nightmare’s link, and decided it was worth a try as all else seemed useless. After creating the DVD image I loaded it up. It all seemed so promising, and went through the installation guide. However, when it tried to restart (during the installation process) it all went south. I thought this might be because the DVD was still in the drive and was possibly trying to boot from it. SO i re-installed it from the Vista DVD and made sure I removed the DVD before it restarted. This seemed to work, and the installation seemed to ‘complete’. But then it just proceeded to a blank screen. The PC eventually restarted itself, and presented an error message explaining Windows shut down un-expectedly. Trying to restart Windows just leads to a blank screen. Safe mode also does not work – it ‘does not allow installation to complete’.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I have tried most of the options here.
