Disk for recovery & repair
If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.
Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.
Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.
It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.
The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.
The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

I really appreciate your effort, but I still get the message “NTLDR is missing” even if I boot using your disc. I press F12 and choose the CD/DVD drive with the recovery disc in it. I have tried both with 32 bit and 64 bit version. I have also tried the computers own recovery program with no success. It’s a Fujitsu Siemens computer, by the way. It looks like I need to install Windows 7 on this machine as well. Vista sucks and Windows 7 should therefore be free!
Horaayyy!!! Thanks to this forum I got to fix my 90,OOOyen worth of Toshiba laptop…it won’t boot and I thought it was totally wrecked. The repair shops told me I should pay around 80,000 yen for a new motherboard so instead I bought a new note PC. I ran into this forum and I had the same problem as John, followed his messages and BOOOMM!! I fixed my almost-1 year “sleeping” laptop to it’s factory setup!!! Thanks to Computer Guru and also to John!!! FTW!!!

am sorry, the problem was with ultraISO when I tried another program (ImgBurn)
it was successfully, and I repaired my computer
thanks thanks thanks
Hi there, I downloaded the Windows Vista Recovery Disc x64 and i’ve burnt it to CD but i still get nothing!!
@Stu, sounds like you’ve got a real problem. Have you tried to boot from it after you burned it to a CDROM? My expertise tells me that problem can’t be fixed. You oughta just give up now. Regards, Dave
I finally got the CD to work and i started the system recovery, however it says i need the liecence key?!
Stu, you’re not supposed to press the ‘Install’ button. Use the ‘Repair my computer’ link at the bottom of the dialog.
I using Dell vostro with ultimate home basic vista Edition I think this thing is very usefull thanks for your kindness
Please help . im not that good with computers . i need help because i reall dont know how to use this.
The download does not work! It is not anything you are doing: it is the download. Each download appears correct, but upon burning to a disc, a file disappears!
I do know computers and each burn loses a different file. Yes, I have tried other ways of doing it and I have attempted to check the download. All to no avail.
Microsoft wants to be a quadrillionaire and to hell with only being a trillionaire.
@Catherine there is nothing wrong with the download, I just burned the vista 32bit boot cd and it works fine.
Thanks for the iso, was easier to download and burn than to dig out my Vista disc that came with my Dell laptop.
I mean he stupid thind just wont boot . ive been up all night trying to see the problem . t’s frustrating!
@yetty, make sure your PC is configured to boot from the CDROM drive. Try booting from another bootable CDROM if you have one, such as an XP disc.
If this doesn’t work, then explain what happens when you try and boot from the CDROM. Does it try and access it? Can you verify the CDROM is working properly by booting another PC using that disc?
Regards,
Dave
That’s nice that it works for you. I have used three different burning software and each time ONE FILE is missing from the recovery cd.
Yes, I even burnt to a dvd, just to see.
Catherine, it’s not missing. It’s purposely removed to disable installing of Windows from this CD. This CD is a repair tool and not a reinstall CD.
Hi,
I managed to download the file, burn the ISO and boot up just fine last night using the repair tool. Then this morning I go to boot up my computer and it’s giving me the same boot error message I got in the first place–the very one I downloaded and burned this to solve.
My problem originated when I turned off some programs that were running at startup; I had assumed the repair tool would take care of this, but do I need to go in and manually reset things?
Thanks for any help.
Just wondering whether this will work if the hard drive is dual booted with another operating system?
Also, I am successfully booting into windows from the BIOS, just having a few problems reaching the log in screen. Cursor appears then laptop restarts. Will this fix this problem i have?
other info.. Running a dell vostro 1710 vista business. Dual booted with MACOSX.
Many thanks
Craig
Yet another CD wasted! No matter which image burner I use, the same dam file is missing! Why can’t someone just send the dam file to me? I am sick of using up so many CD’s just to fix my pc. The friggin manufacturer should include the repair/recovery CD upon purchase! Oh, I also used DVD’s and Rewritable CD’s. Would someone please send me the correct download or all the files!
@Catherine, try reading the directions before getting your underwear all in a bunch. This is for repair only, not INSTALLATION, so this file you think is missing was never there. http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/Recovering+the+Vista+Bootloader+from+the+DVD
Regards,
Dave
im installing this now, and i was wondering how to burn this to a dvd? im using dvd decrypter
@zach, download and install imgburn, then burn the ISO directly to the CDROM as an image.Regards,Dave
Hi,
I have downloaded and burned both ISO’s Tried both and each time Vista
PC boots in to Recovery Mode no problem, but when trying to do a
Startup Repair it fails with “OS version is incompatible with Startup
Repair” Vista Build is 60001 SP1 Any ideas?
The recovery download works. I clicked “repair” then it took me to that menu with the “command prompt” option. &I followed the wiki instructions. But when I re-booted it, my laptop (compaq presario f700) still wouldn’t start up.. Should I re-try the whole thing? Or is there something else I should do. Thanks for helping!

hello people, i downloaded the stuff but yet my cd/dvd drive isnt working, is there a way to use it from the flash drive. Thanks
is this recovery dise applicable for acer,hp and dell.
I get the message no restore points have been created on your computer???
So then to create a restore point open system protection. It says your computer is running in a limited diagnostic state
Thank you so much! I had gotten a BlueScreen 0x000000f4. I can not start up to safemode. I tried this, Repaired, and it works now. Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where is the serial no. for the vista 32-bit recovery disc.
I tried using it and it stopped asking for a serial no.
Thanks,
wdl
Hi wdl, this doesn’t come with a serial no. As it is only a Recovery Disc and not an installation disc, thus only for repairing purposes.
i have a question.. i use a toshiba laptop and i tried to boot my pc 3 times, but it takes too long and this never ends.. i only see the cursor at the center and a black screen.. i could once get to the “repair my computer” selection and after i clicked on it, the window disappeared and nothing happened after.. what is the problem here guys? how could everybody make it work but mine just takes so long even just to get to the window section..
could anyone help?
matt.
wow, its really works!!!!!!!! first when i use the nero burning rom, its not working, but when i use the imgburn, its really works!!!!! thanks!!!!
Hey, i just downloaded your Recovery CD for fixing my “crcdisk.sys”-boot problem of windows, but when i try to boot the Recovery CD, it just loads to a blank desktop background and does nothing.
Any idea how to fix that?
just like to express my gratitude for making this recovery disk available.
Burning the ISO to cd with ImgBurn did the trick and all is good again.
thank u for the download. i was able to burn the iso image on a disc.
my window vista is now working , again thank u
my wife’s laptop developed this problem a couple of days ago. It is an ACER ASPIRE5315. I am not sure if it is 32 or 64 bit vinloaded both ISOs and am now downloading the AVG recovery. Should I try the 32 first and then the AVG? Thanks
btw, the error message i get is a c000021a
I was able to download and rip the vista recovery file to cd. In fact, I was also able to boot it up and get to the menus. The problem, it won’t run the RESTORE, it says it already in operation and the program will exit. I’m trying to restore the computer back 30 days ago using your recovery solution, but the restore feature won’t work. Why?
Any ideas?
Windows is loading files…. (this is what I see on the screen ..white progress bar)
Next, I see the traditional progress bar with green vector-like graphic roll
Windows Vista
Language to Install:
Time and Currency format:
Keyboard or input method:
I then click next
On the next screen it has the Windows Vista logo and Install Now -> image, just below I see two text links:
1. What to know before installing windows
2. Repair your computer
I selected Repair your computer
It brings up System Recovery Options, searching for files then stops at “Select and operating system to repair and click Next. Note: This feature cannot repair operating systems earlier than Windows Vista.
Below this I see:
Microsoft Windows Vista | Partion Size: 227476 MB | Location: (C:) Vista64
I then click the Next> button and it brings me to a main menu with the following options:
Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt
I selected the “System Restore”, I want to restore the computer to an earlier point in time. When I click System Restore I get the following error message:
“The System REstore wizard is already running. This program will now exit”
What is gods name does that mean? Why would it do this? I’m really stuck.
One other thing I just noticed… When I click System Restore it acts as if I did nothing and just gives that dotted line around the words System Restore. Then when I click it a second time it gives me that annoying error message.
I hope I provided enough detail. I just want to get to the system restore running and restore the computer 30-days back..sorry to bombard you all with messages
@ Justin…Everything is right, except that you must choose STARTUP REPAIR and when you get into your system as before, THEN you can choose a restore point. Hope this helps. Try it, I’m sure it’ll word.
I have downloaded both 32 & 64 bit vista iso’s. 64 burned fine, 32 will not, I have downloaded it twice have tried many times to burn it with Imageburn. It goes through the motions, but the disk is empty when Imageburn finishes. Verify generates an overlay mismatch error message.
The 64 generated the same error message, but that disk actually got written. Unfortunately I need the 32 bit version. Any advise would be appreciated. I even tried with all virus protection off and disconnected from the net.
@Gbear, why did you download the 64-bit version when you have a 32-bit computer in the first place?
What method are you using to download? Check the file size and MD5 sum after you download to make sure it’s not a corrupt download.
Can you disable all other applications while using imgburn to see if that helps? It sounds like there are buffer underruns (the computer can’t supply the data fast enough, resulting in a bad CDROM burn), or the image wasn’t downloaded successfully.
Can you burn the CDROM from another computer?
Regards,
Dave
Thanks for the reply,
Here are the numbers:
aff5ceef6dbf202cc1beb9fc81e8d02b – checksum
123350 KB – file size
I tried the 32 bit first, knowing it was the version I needed. When it didn’t work I thought maybe I do need the 64. Then I downloaded the 64 and at least it burned and booted.
I have no other applications running, other than those started by by windows XP, which is the system on the laptop I am using until I get the Compaq box running again.I have no problems burning other files on this machine. I even used Utorrent.
Thanks again
Gerry

hi, is there any way that i can put this file onto a usb flash drive.. and recover windows vista on a different laptop? thanks
Hi.
I just saw this forum and very happy to have come across.
I have a problem in my HP desktop with vista OS. The system boots up, then I get the desk top with all icons, and the system crashes with a blue screen (Oxc0000000f and scsiport.sys. The system reboots and same problem persists. I tried to start in safe mode. Some files get loaded and then it stops.
I am very concerned as I have lot of important files.
I have the Vista recovery discs(Two DVDs) which I burnt when I got this computer as per the manufacturers (HP) instructions. I do not want to use them, as I am told that if I use them I will lose all data and it will only reinstall vista to the original factory standard. Is it true or will I have the option to repair the computer with those recovery discs.
On the other hand ,if I download the recovery disc (120MB) as posted in this thread using Torrent, burn the ISO file on a disc and boot my computer with that disc, will I be able to get over this blue screen problem and save all my data as well as all the installed softwares?
Any help with detailed instructions will be highly appreciated.
