Disk for recovery & repair
If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.
Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.
Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.
It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.
The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.
The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

Hi Dave,
I have had no more problems with my system booting up since I removed VUSE from my computer. The last instance of a boot problem was on July 10th. There must be something in the VUSE program that corrupts the boot files.
Thank you for your recovery program.
Roger
@Roger, thanks for letting me know. That’s very interesting.
@Coho, this rescue CDROM won’t fix your problem. Try posting a message on answers.microsoft.com. Be sure to give as much information as possible about the problem, including what happened that you think caused it.
There are a thousand ways to recover your data, including a Linux rescue disc if you are unable to boot again. Hopefully you’ll now know to keep a good backup.
@Coho, I did a little searching on your problem, and looks like there is in fact a possibility that the rescue CDROM will fix your problem. Give it a shot. Here is the link I found:

I have a big problem my computer has a varius, I think, that is making my computer crazy. I’m frostated with a window message everytime I connect something to the computer or when the computer starts. I was going to restart my computer with the recovery disk in the D drive so everything would be earse. But by accident I earse the D drive info that was there. I was trying to burn the informaiton into some DVDs but I erase by accident the D drive information. Is there anyway I could reboot my computer like the manufacturing information (Like how it came since the start). Thank you for the help it would be a lot of help thank you.
Holy crap, thank you so much! This ISO has fixed a critical system problem with my main computer and it is WORKING NOW! Whoever is behind this download is amazing, and you’ve really saved me so thanks!
Hi Folks. I have a problem with Vista Home Premium SP1 on an HP PAvillion DV61246tx. When I try to do a restart, after installing or removing a program, or for any other reason, I get a very rapid flash of what I think is the “Windows was not shut down properly, select safe mode, start normally etc”. I then get the HP logo then a black sreen with no cursor. Pressing power button powers down, then pressing power button once again gives a brief flash of the same message then boots normally to the desk top and everything works. I think this poosibly started after a vista automatic update (now crippled).
Could the Vista recovery disk help with this problem?.
Would be useful if it wasn’t a blasted Torrent – for those of us not interested in opening our PCs to having to install peer-to-peer file sharing
i burned the iso to a dvd, my laptop was able to boot from the cd, I was getting the mbr boot error before, so in the system recovery options, I just ran the startup repair option and aftwerwards when the system restarts, I can’t boot from the cd again. And the mbr boot error is still there.
Hi this is probably a really silly question but will doing a start up repair wipe the contents of my hard drive?
I can boot up in safe mode so I done the msconfig, tried to restart with just services running (no startup items) but vista not loading so I am thinking one of the services is corrupt?
Any chance this disc may fix it as my pc did not come with the CD. Made my own recovery disc but want to try and fix it without wiping the hard drive.
@Jason, you need to learn how to use punctuation and sentence structure so we can coherently understand what you are saying. Is there actually a question there? Check your computer’s BIOS to make sure the CDROM drive is selected as one of the boot options.
@Yvette, the rescue CDROM won’t wipe the contents of your hard disk. If you can boot in safe mode, then this CDROM isn’t going to help you. You have a different problem, and would be better suited to visit the Microsoft support forum at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/community
Regards,
Dave
I am able to successfully boot off the disc and make all the way to “System Recovery Options”. However, at this point there is no operating system listed. If I try to load the drivers, where would I find them?
FYI: I’m using a gateway mt6707 running vista home premium 64-bit. I downloaded the 64-bit version of the iso and burned it to a CD-R
@Dude984, try the first link I found using Google:

nevermind. fixed it…now backing up all my data on my external. thanks for the iso…it really worked!
Sorry about that, I was just in a rush to find an answer I didn’t realize I crammed the words together. Here’s what exactly happened. I was using acronis true image home to restore a backup image during startup, somehow the recovery was interrupted so that’s what’s started the “mbr error 1 please insert a floppy disk” Afterward no matter what I did, (I changed the boot sequence to boot from CDROM drive first) my acronis loader cd won’t boot. So I searched online and stumbled on this site and downloaded the recovery iso file and burned it to a disc.
The cd managed to boot, I got the “press any key to boot from cd or dvd” message and I managed to get into the system recovery options window, now instead of selecting “command prompt” and typing bootrec.exe /fixmbr bootrec.exe /fixboot, I just clicked the “startup repair” option. Don’t know if that matters, but somehow after the supposed “fix”, I rebooted my laptop but the previous message is still there. Now to make matters worse, the recovery cd no longer boots, regardless of the BIOS setting. I’m also getting a mbr error 2 as well.
I know I probably I should have used the command prompt option, but I knew about that solution after I tried the automatic startup repair option first. So I’m not sure what to do, since now even the recovery disc won’t boot.
I’m not able to burn it to cd, but i can use a smart drive. Will this work?
Thanks, I downloaded it. I hope I can use this recovery disc when my computer fails
Hi
I recently tried to reformat my Vaio running vista.
I loaded the recovery and tried a complete system restore.
During this i delted the data, but now when i switch on it says ‘no operating system found’ when i put in the recovery discs it shows a X drive but when it tries anything a #403 error message comes up and i get no where. i recently tried to load wondows xp from scratch but now it says can not find hard disk.
any/all advice would be appreciated. as you can see i know how to drive but aint a mechanic.
April
@April, are you saying you were able to install vista from your restore disc, but when you rebooted, it reported “no operating system found”? Try and download the Seagate disk tools and have it verify that your hard disk is okay. Here is a link http://bit.ly/18ZRYX
Download the one for DOS, which is an ISO image that you burn to a CDROM, in much the same way you did for this vista recovery disc.
This is the version from Seagate. If you know the manufacturer of your hard disk, download the corresponding tool from that vendor.
Thanks for the download but when I download the file its jst a winrar file no ISO? any help would be awsome!!!
I can only say THANK YOU! so much for this wonderful service. I was totally helpless and would have lost all my critical data, but for your repair tool.
I will make a donation for certain, but anyone out there, this works.
Key is after the download of the .torrent file, you need to download uTorrent to open it, before burning on a CD using Express Burn disc.
Use F8 to reboot PC and you are on your way.
Best of Luck.
Yemi
Mitchell, it LOOKS like a WinRAR file, but it’s actually an ISO.
It keeps saying the application is not found when I try to download the program.
Am I doing something wrong?
I am working on a friends computer which will not boot with a Winload.exe corrupt problem. It has a Windows Vista sticker on it and she says it is Vista 64 bit. I tried bot the Vista 32 bit Recovery Disk and the Vista 64 bit Recovery disk. When I perform the Startup Repair with both versions it says “Windows OS Version is incompatible with Startup Repair” so it not work with the 32 bit or 64 bit Recovery Disk. Any ideas?
my laptop wasn’t working right so I tried to do a system recovery when it restarted the boot manager came up and said windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. it tells me to use a windows installation disc and restart. below that it says file: \windows\system32\drivers\volsnap.sys
status: 0xc000000f
Info: Windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing, or corrupt.
when i tried your disc
my laptop said to push any key to boot from cd which i did
then it said the file is possibly corrupt. the file header does not match the computed checksum.
What does this mean? what can I do? I need help ASAP. My dad just got me this comp for school and if he finds out i messed it up already he is gonna kick my ass
j’ai un problème avec mon pc et je voudrai le formatér avec un cd que je n’ai pas alors pourez vous m’aider s v p
Seed you bstards!
thanks dude, the laptop got BSOD a scary one…….
damn f*cking vista system
No seeds or peers to download from.
If in Ur system have Winrar, thats downloaded file looks like winrar but its an .iso file only. While installing winrar software, it ask file extensions to check. if u already checked .iso option in winrar s/w, it looks winrar file and we open that file winrar too. But its functionality is .iso image file.
Thanks friend, Just only got downloaded the recovery tool. and i hope it works fine at my Ltop OS currupted…
I downloaded the ISO and burned it to a CD and ran the cd on my computer that won’t boot. It ran sucessfully but found no errors. I am able to get to the password login but then the screen goes black. please help!
chris
is there any torrent , where you get the vista home download (not the recovery disk)
Great, I’ve gone from “operationg system not found” after ACER had “repaired” my notebook (thanks assholes) to a bootable system. A few items however:
1) I have multiple drives with Vista installed – 3 of them
PQSERVICE (C); ACER (D) & Local Disk (F)
I am also left with a DATA (E)
2) This new PQSERVICE volume is the boot, however, it appears to be
some kind of half version as there is only a USER (says Administrator
been disabled) and on boot several dialog boxes come up explaining
that the following DLLs are missing: MSCORIES NvMcTray, mnvsvc,
PLFSET and NvCpl. These files all exist on the volume ACER
How do I delete this PQSERVICE partition ensuring that ACER is the boot
partition?
All of the data I was hoping would still be there is gone btw – it looks to me as if ACER service attempted to resintall VISTA and failed.
Thanks for a great product. I will be sending a donation.
Dear Dave, my computer was running on a “temporary file” so I opened a new user account, as that’s what a website told me was the solution, but it didn’t work, and i restarted it and no change. So i wanted to recover my computer, the last time i did that i tried to install linux and somehow it recovered vista, so i tried doing it without a recover disc. Now my computer just says “Operating System Not Found” when i try to turn it on.
Any solutions???
@Mike, how about just switching to Linux? 🙂
A few questions:
– What is the “temporary file” you referenced?
– Did you actually install Linux on this machine? Is it still on there?
– What other changes have you made that might relate to this?
– Was the computer working okay before you made these changes, or would it not boot then either?
– Did you go through the Vista recovery disc process? Did it find a Vista installation, and did you run the repair process?
Regards,
Dave
Can any one provide the steps to do of this recovery disc..Still now my Laptop is working fine. and i need to take a recovery disc from the healthy operating System either backup or recovery disc… help me in case…
thanks in advance…
pavanpabolu@ymail.com,9949876679
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
If you want to use it as a bootable USB drive, just mount the ISO and copy the files to the USB drive you want to boot from. Worked just fine for me!
I don’t know if it works all USB drives but it works with my SanDisk Cruzer, some model, 4 gb.
Hello everyone. I lost my original recovery discs and am trying to do a Windows Complete PC Restore.
I have burned the disc as an image with no problems and have gotten to the System Recovery Options screen. When I click on Windows Complete PC Restore, I get the following message in a dialog box:
“No valid backup locations could be found. Windows cannot find a backup on the hard disks or DVDs on this computer. Attach the correct hard disk or insert the last backup DVD and then start the restore process again.”
Is a complete restore even part of this disc’s functionality? If so, what am I doing wrong? Thank you!
Ok,the laptop is fixed and ready to go now………….
Very many thanks dude…….very many thanks
@Theresa, this is only a boot recovery disc, not a complete system restore disc. If you don’t have your original installation or recovery disc, your SOL.
Regards,
Dave
@Dave, I accidentally donated my recovery discs to Goodwill. Guess I’m going to have to resort to something illegal. Thanks for your help!
@Dave, please see my previous post. I still need help to resolve my post recovery issue!
Thanks,
Hank
thank you thank you thank you!!!! Worked wonderfully. You guys rock!!!!
