Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    3. FIXED MY PROBLEM WITH OUT THIS DOWNLOAD…

STEP 1. As your computer restarts erratically over and over and reaches the point where you see the ?(c) Microsoft? and the moving lines, hold the Power button down until it shuts off your computer completely.
STEP 2. Turn on computer. Now your computer is going to start in the ?Windows Startup Repair? diagnostic mode. Press ENTER so that the ?Startup Repair? may commence. I let it ran until the search was done and I got the message ?Windows cannot repair this computer automatically?
STEP 3 Look down for the ?View advanced option for system recovery and support? and CLICK on. You?ll be prompted to ?System Recovery Option?; select your keyboard language (US) and click NEXT button.
STEP 4 Now you are in the ?Administrator Account?. In the ?User name? pop up, change ?Administrator? to ?user? (which is you). Than enter your usual ?log in? password (if you have one on your computer) and press NEXT.
STEP 5 .You are now in the ?Choose a recovery tool?. Go down to ?Command Prompt? and CLICK on. You are prompted in to the MS DOS/ text mode.
STEP 6. In here simply apply Pieter magic text (as per his post @ 21):
      type: prompt winsxs (press enter)

type: move C:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml text.xml (press enter)

      type: exit and restart computer

      YOU ARE DONE!
And don?t forget to backup your photos, important files and the rest on an external Hard Drive or a DVD asap!

HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE ELSE. GOOD LUCK!!!

    10. One attempt I selected “…to know be before repairing..”
I returned to a black screen erroe message

My next attempt to boot from Windows Vista Recovery Disc was a BSCOD
“driver has overun a stack based buffer..”

I am going backwards??!!??? Please help!

    11. I’m having the same problem as a couple other people. I run the Recovery Disk and get to the point to Choose Operating System, but none are listed. The hard drive does not show up when I select Load Drivers. Dude984 figured his problem out, but didn’t post back how he did it. And Nico has the same problem. If anyone has an answer, I’d appreciate it greatly.

This whole computer problem started when I suspected a corrupt infcache.1 file. I renamed it so Windows would rebuild it, and when it didn’t I renamed it back. But now that file is nowhere to be found, and I hoped a Vista Repair Disk would solve the problem.

    12. @THNDRacket, the fix is to download the hard disk drivers from your computer manufacturer on to another PC and copy them to a floppy disc or USB key, depending on the instructions outlined by your manufacturer, and use that disc when prompted by the Vista Rescue disc. This will then load the drivers necessary for the rescue disc to recognize your hard disk.

From this, you should at least have something to use Google to search on. Let us know how you make out, and what you did to fix it.

Don’t despair. At the worst, you can remove the hard disk and put it into another computer to at least rescue your files.

      Regards,
      Dave

    13. hi…i format my recovey partion….so now i cant use the restore factory settings…can i use this Windows Vista Recovery Disc to back my recovery partion..so i can use again the restore factory settings??

    14. Hi Guys (Dave, Mahmoud and others),

Just wanted to tell you that we donated $20 in return for the wonderful help you have provided with the Windows Recovery disc download and the accompanying instructions. The whole set-up is superb and with your excellent instructions we were able to restore a complete backup to one of our laptops very easily and quickly. The procedure worked first time and immediately overcame a lot of difficulties we had experienced previous to finding your website.

Thank you so much for this help. We were especially motivated to donate something because you are willing to generously offer the help for free and we feel that you deserve some gift in return.

Please feel free to publish our comments.

      David and Dawn

    15. Hi

I followed all of the instructions listed in the blog and ive successfully burned the iso (x64) yet when i put the disc into my toshiba laptop i just get the same message as before:

      File: windows\system32\winload.exe
      Status: 0XC000000F
Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

It tells me to insert the windows installation disc which i do not have. Is this article even for me? Am I in the wrong place downloading the wrong things?

      Thanks

    16. @DSP, are you sure you have your computer configured to boot from the CDROM? Refer to your manual for specific instructions, but typically you press the F2 or DEL key just as the computer is booting, which brings it to a special configuration menu, where you can control how the computer boots.

If the computer boots from the CDROM, and you see a prompt that says “Press a key to boot from CDROM” then please note that in your response.

      Regards,
      Dave

    17. @Dave Ok so the laptop gives me two options when the computer starts up, it says either press F2 for system utilities and F12 for boot menu

I have pressed F12 and end up at the boot menu which is a grey box and blue font with the options

      1. HDD
      2. FDD
      3. CD/DVD
      4. LAN
      5. USB

When i press CD/DVD (which is what i assume im supposed to press?) it takes me right back to where i started.

When i press F2 and scrool over to the Boot section it gives me the same options but when i cant select CD/DVD. Does this mean my CD Drive is broken?

I dont see “CDROM” or “press a key to boot” anywhere.

I hope this is gives you more detail, im technologically challenged haha.

    18. hi, thank you for posting this and being such a good sport with us all.

      my problem is that:

i downloaded the recovery disk and burn the .iso file onto a cd.
ran the cd, took me to the option menu and i tried the first option (start up repair) which is supose to restore my computer automatically, but everytime i tried this it give me a error messege that says that it cannot repair this computer automatically.

on sinature error line number 7 says bad disk.

does this refer to the cd i burned or to my hard drive?

i tried doing the system revory (rollback) but did not work either:

it says cannot find my files: 0x80070002

the first error i got that got me going through all of this was an error that asked to introduce the instalation cd and run repair computer:

the error said that the file jbtcp.sys was corrupted or missing

      error:0x000000225

what can i do? thank you

    19. @DSP, it sounds like you didn’t burn the CDROM properly. Did you follow the directions on how to properly burn the CDROM? Using the computer you burned the ISO file from, if you view the disc after you have burned it, does it display a list of files, or is it just the one file on the CDROM? If it is just one file (the name of the one you downloaded) you have done it wrong. You must burn it as an image.

@Johnnywild, it sounds like the CDROM you burned is corrupt. Try burning it again, and make sure to choose the verify option from within the burning program (I assume you used the free ImgBurn, as it’s most reliable). If it still doesn’t work, it sounds like the CDROM drive on your PC that you are trying to recover is defective.

You might also try going through the boot process on the PC you burned the image from, and see if you can boot using the CDROM successfully. You don’t have to follow all the way through the process, but at least see if it makes it past the point you previously received the error on the PC you are trying to rescue.

      Regards,
      Dave

    20. @Dave this is really embarrasing but i put the wonrg disc in! But I have another problem now. Ive now gotten to the Windows System Recovery Options and selected Repair Windows and it says cannot automatically repair (just like for Johnnywild). The problem event name is StatupRepairV2, should i list the problem signatures to you?

    21. Dave, thanks for advice.

unfortunately i booted the laptop with the cd i burn earlier, work perfectly, tried first two options (startup fixer and roll back) went through all the process of booting.

i retried doing it again on the pc, (startup fixer) got the same error messege. read the log, and it said that all test were fine(updates, system, harddrive) so at the end where it says source of error said bad harddisk.

does it mean i’m not going to be able to rescue the computer. do have change the hardDrive. or can i get it back.

error on black screen says sbjtcp.sys damage or missing.

    22. so i reburn the cd with another program just in case, samething happened.

i have a couple of harddive tools but it won’t let me use them, i don’t know if it`s because they are old and they are packed with an xp version.

when i tried using the tools it tells me bad command line.

driver xmsdsk.exe not loaded. and from then on i can’t get pass trhough

it won’t creat ram as R:

    23. @Johnnywild, what you have written makes no sense. I have no idea what program you are running, or what you did to cause that error.

Instead download the Seagate disk tools and use it to confirm your hard disk is not corrupt or has a physical defect. This is a small ISO file, much like the Vista recovery disc, that you burn to a CDROM in the same way as the Vista recovery disc. You can find it here:

      http://bit.ly/18ZRYX

Download the one for DOS. This one should work for all disk manufacturers, but if you know the manufacturer of your hard disk, you should be able to find a similar program from them. Make sure your hard disk is physically working properly before continuing.

@DSP, it’s possible you also have a disk that is defective. Follow the directions I’ve posted above to verify your hard disk first.

You can also use Google to search for the error codes the Vista recovery disc provided you with, and see if it returns any further information that might be helpful.

      Regards,
      Dave

    24. @Johnnywild, that means you have a bad hard disk. If it is still under warranty, you can return it to the manufacturer for a replacement. If not, try and use the tool to repair the bad parts of the disk. Read the documentation for the Seagate utility.

If it’s not under warranty, and you can’t fix it with the Seagate tool, chances are your SOL..

      Regards,
      Dave

    25. I got a new hard drive, and it asks me for a boot disk and i burned the windows cista 32*bit to the cd and it always says it’s missing a file, or when i search for windows vista it doesn’t show up

    26. @Dave Well, i followed the steps and burned it properly and had it verified, i did it 3 times just incase and ive tried all three discs. I dont care about any of the files on my laptop or anything, is there an easier way that i could per say just reset it?

    27. @Jan9, @DSP, this is only a Vista recovery CDROM. It does not include the full distribution, so you will not be able to “reset” your system or install the full version of Vista using this method.

Find a technical friend, and ask him/her to find the real Vista online and use that to install, purchase a new copy, or complain to your computer manufacturer.

      Regards,
      Dave

    28. @Dave Ok thanks for your help and time! Ill probably just buy a new one because toshiba is the worst.

    29. THANK YOU SO MUCH, I AM DONATING RIGHT AWAY

Just a note, if anyone is having trouble loading the Recovery Disc (like I did), make sure you change the booting preferences in BIOS so that the DVD/CD drive boots before the HDD. Also don’t panic if the Recovery Disc takes a long time to load, I was staring at a blue-green screen for ages before I could see any options.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

    38. @Phrank, there is a virus that causes a very similar problem. Start with running the AVG antivirus rescue disc:

      http://www.avg.com/ww-en/avg-rescue-cd

Burn it to a CDROM in much the same way as you did with this Vista rescue disc, then boot from it. It will scan all of your hard disks and registry, and have it remove any viruses it finds.

You should also use Google to search for similar problems:

      http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&q=windows+black+screen+cursor

There are quite a few solutions shown there.

      Regards,
      Dave

    39. Steve…First download the file to a folder on your HDD (C: probably), then from that folder download to a Blank Disc ( CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RW, etc…)

    40. Dave, I have finally resolved the situation myself via a registry change. If you wish to know how, drop me a line and I’ll explain it to you.

I’m not sure how the multiple installations were created, like I said, the ACER service idiots tried to re-install Vista AFTER I ASKED THEM NOT TO. Now that I have the proper volume mounted as C drive I am attempting to recover all deleted files before deleting the additional, uneccessary drives.

I will then look for an application that will allow me to “absorb” the allocated space into my volume mounted as D:

Hard to believe that a trip to the ACER technical support center for a motherboard issue has created such a damned headache.

    41. Hi. I cant get my computer on! When I start up my computer it goes to the point before the moving bar with ‘Microsoft Corporation’ text and an error screen pops up: Windows Boot Manager Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. then theres the steps to repair with the installation disc, which I dont have. File: \Windows\System32\Drivers\xuxbov.sys
      Status: 0xc0000098
Info: Windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing, or corrupt.
Ive tried to fix this problem with a 32 bit vista installation disc that a friend had burned – didnt work, my PC didnt response to it in anyway. and then I tried to fix this problem from this site, I downloaded the 64 bit and burned the, what I think was WinRAR file instead of an ISO to a CD then tried it on my PC – no response either! Im out of options since I dont have the original installation disc 🙁 Someone help me I wanna get back to my computer! Im on my brothers bad laptop at the moment. Im not a computer genious, I dont even know what my computers model is, nor do I know whether its a 64 or a 32 bit D: I got the computer from my sisters boyfriend, when he came with it he just gave me a keyboard a mouse, the computer, the screen and the wires. No disc no package to tell what model etc it is.. Im pretty sure a virus corrupted and destroyed the system32 drivers, since I wouldnt know where to even find them. Please someone help me! I might have done something wrong with the burning.. not sure. If only I had the installation disc so I could just wipe my computer of everything and start anew!
      Any help is appreciated.
      -Nick
