Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    1. Nick…If your willing to WIPE OUT everything, any windows disk should work for formatting the drive. After the Windows disc loads all the needed files it should say “1.)Do you want to start wimdows set-up…press ENTER” 2.) “do you want to do a REPAIR?..Press R, and 3.) Do you want to CANCEL?..press ESCAPE…or something like that…Press Enter (SET UP) ..Then it will ask “Select the Drive or Partition listed you want to put Windows in”, or “Do you want to make a new partiton?”.. Select a New partiton.and partition the whole drive…. It should say something like, “This partition has Data on it and will loose everything if you Format it..Tell the computer to Go Ahead. It will then ask “ARE YOU SURE?.Press L?”…Press L…. Then you can start the New Windows Set-Up..REMEMBER!..IT WILL WIPE EVERYTHING OUT!… I did this with an old Windows 98 disc, then up graded to Windows XP…make sure you have a “KEY NUMBER” from any disc you use….Just something I’ve done a few times…I take NO RESPONSIBILITY…GOOD LUCK Nick

    2. Nick…Sorry I made a mistake… It will ask if you want to delete a “Listed partiton”…say yes and click on your drive you want to format….delete it , then make a new partiton using all available Megs..Sorry about that….

    4. Hello? Heelllllp!
I got all the way up tp the point where the Vista Recovery Disck could not see my OS.
I had a Boot Mgr Missing ewrror. It was suggested I get the drivers for my Hard drive and slect load drivers once I get to that point. I got what I thought were the HD drivers from HP for my HPmini2133. (it was and .exe file) However when I got to the load driver step it did not see the driver file on my usb at all. I went to the dot prompt and tried the steps found here:

but that was a no go as well. : ( I could not even reformat with XP Boot mgr missing. I do not care to save information

Any suggestions? . I only want to make my friend’s grandson happy with a working PC. Please help! I am so close!I CANNOT LOSE THE BATTLE AGAINST THIS FLIPPIN Mini notebook!

      Thanks in advance

    5. Well …. I have a Toshiba laptop p-200 R5 and well my first step was using the recovery disc’s that I made when I purchased the comp. So in the choises I had I choose to clean the hard drive before repairing … well that just killed it all, so now no matter what I have tried it just wont laod anything, I tried your recovery but its missing the boot mgr and I get error0x80070002 cannot find d:sources\Install.wim from my searching it all leads back to my deleting the hard drive cuz I gues they leave the files needed on the smal partition for future recovery … soooo anyone have an idea. I will try the forums here but I thought I would post up here also 😀 Thx ahead of time if help comes.

    6. Thanks a million for putting this up. It solved the problem I was having with bootmgr compressed. Hope it helps many others that are experiencing similar problems out as it worked perfectly.

    7. @Cheiro

Look for a multicolored Windows OS label somewhere on your computer. The Product key will be on that label.

    8. Since my computer is now inoperable, how do I know whether to use the 32 bit or 64 bit recovery disc torent?

    9. Thank you so much for all the info!

I am trying to fix my friend’s Sony Vaio PCG-7V2L. I downloaded and burned the recovery disc but I have run into a snag… When I hit F2 to get to the configuration menu, CDROM is not an option from which to boot! Any advice would be much appreciated…

    10. Hi,

      Thank you, it’s working! 😀
I had a problem because I uninstalled Ubuntu and this solution repaired my mbr automatically ! (First I had no OS found by the program…It was because I didn’t download the right recovery disk (32bits in place of 64 bits)).

      Thanks again for this solution,

      Blackink

    11. Hi, my son has a Toshiba Satellite L505D-S6947 Vista. He has been getting this message: the instruction at 0x77e47652 referenced memory at 0x77e47652. the memory could not be written when he tries to open IE. So I downloaded this to my pc, made a CD for his pc, put it in, it didn’t read, so we restarted the pc hitting F12 so it’d boot up from cd. Finally it read the cd, Entered the Activation key and it said it was wrong, so I went to skip this step for now, and this message: Windows cannot open the required file D:\sources\install.wim the file does not exist. make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070002. SO I’m about to exit the whole thing because by now I’m frustrated as all hell and I find a button to ‘repair’ I click that and after it goes through the process it tells me something about can’t be repaired something about volume. I’m about to trash his whole dam pc, it’s only a year old and to many dam problems. I have a restore cd for my HP p61101 also vista.. will that cd restore/reformat his pc? If not.. what have I done wrong in tryin to fix this POS

    12. Thanks so much for posting this information. I can now at least boot my Vista 64 laptop. Hopefully, if I can run the chkdsk command, I can fix it.

    13. I got it to boot and when I put my prodect key in from the back of my computer it says it can not be validated. I know it is right. So what now ?

    14. I tried to do a factory restore on a Acer aspire 5315 by using f10 in the process of doing that it gave me an failed error 0xa000000c and then gave me a bootmgr missing i download vista 32 and tried to fix the boot and nothing when i tried to do a repair my OS doesnt show now i dont have the bootmgr message but just a plain black screen and to make it worse f10 isnt working is there anything that ive done wrong here? i dont care to lose the files i just want windows to start working again . What have i done wrong so far

      please help me 🙁

    15. 32 bit Vista Home Premium failed to boot on my laptop and the only options I was given was to start Windows normally (if I could do that then surely I would ??) or insert Vista disc which (obviously) Compaq don’t give you. Found this site on an old XP desktop and followed your very easy instructions. Laptop booted from the disk without problem and after following the onscreen promts to repair startup I now have a back to health computer. Brilliant. Many thanks !

    16. BTW Gayle, thats a load of bull spammer, the .torrents are free and utorrent is free too dumbass. Oh, and they are not softwares, they are disc images. Go to hell and stop spamming. If you know what you’re doing fixing windows is easy as pie (although M$ could provide SOME decent explanation at least) go read some books on computing and come again.

    17. Dear dave, so i had an update alert from vista saying i can update to service pack 2, so i did this and it got to the 3 stages of installation “do not turn off computer” but then BOOM my pc crashes. now every time i start up my pc it says “service pack did not install correctly reverting changes” and then switches its self off. 19. Hi

After not being able to get past the Windows boot manager screen I downloaded the recovery disk files and burned them onto a disk, but once in my computer the only thing that comes onto the screen is “Operating System Missing”. Is there anything I can do next?

    20. Thank you so much ! I restored successfully the missing BOOTMGR on the laptop of my friend.

    21. Hi,

Can you please tell me a procedure to make a bootable USB flash drive containing recovery files from this .iso. I have a netbook, it doesn’t have any optical drives.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

    22. Thanks so much. This worked perfectly in letting me get my laptop up and running.
I had a nasty virus the replicated itself in my winlogin.exe and explorer.exe files.
      The restore worked perfectly.

    23. I want to purchase a set of “restore disks” for my acer vista u-5120A pc. I need to re-set it to factory standards. I purchased this in 2008 and I was assured I didn’t need a set of restore disks.

Well I do. My router and modem work perfectly, yet my wireless pc cannot hook up to the wireless connection.

How much does a set of restore disks costs and the length of time to obtain it? I cannot get on the internet and my system prevents me from setting my hard drive to factory settings by asking for some unknown password.

My friend has an apple laptop and she is able to get on-ling without a problem.

I’m quite sure I need to set my hard-drive to factory settings.

    24. @jane hughes

I can help-but need for infor. 1.Is this “Wireless PC” has wireless ethernet built into the unit? 2.Is there a on/off switch to control this connection? 3.Can you see this ethernet adapter in the hardware under device manager.

Not able to connect to a router is problem you can’t fix by restoring the hard drive to factory.

      If the wireless adapter is built in, then typically there is switch to turn on/off. If it’s on then check in device manager to make windows recognized it. {Network Adapter}

If you don’t see it under device manager then device has malfunction.

    25. Hey! so i downloaded the recovery iso file and was able to boot up my computer. however, after i entered the product key an error window popped up and basically said the “install.wim” file on the D drive doesn’t exist. i don’t know what to do. can anyone help?

    26. I am having problems with the blue screen of death on my desktop. I am trying to burn this cd using my laptop but I dont think its working. When I tried to test it out it would not boot when I restarted my computer. Am I doing something wrong? CD Rom is set to boot first one start up.

If anyone knows please email me at ljastangs21@hotmail.com

    27. Worked great, worked so fast, i wondered if it did anything. I “torrented” since my HP doesn’t have a real restore disc. Thank you so much.

    28. Thankyou very much i had a problem where i installed ubuntu and for some reason my windows Recovery and gone so every time i click on recovery it failed i used this recovery disk and im back up and running thanks this is a very good tool indeed to have thanks and keep up the good work i know other sites that charge you for this but your just like me give it for free i hate these computer repair shops that charge you over the tops just to look at the computer/laptop before even doing any thing so this is why now i repair peoples computers for free so yeah thanks

    29. When you download the ISO do you just brun that straight to a disk or do you have to extract the iso before burning to disk?

    30. you have to extract the files before you can burn it to disk use winrar at cnet downloads its free to download and use ok logan

    31. @darrell, @logan: no, no, no! Don’t do that! It’s not actually a WinRAR file, it’s an ISO image which WinRAR pretends is an archive! Just open the file exactly as you downloaded it with the free ImgBurn and use that to burn it to a CD.

    32. I’m not sure if I have a 32-bit or a 64-bit laptop. I have an ACER ASPIRE 5630 with HOME PREMIUM and i tried the 32-bit and it didn’t load the CD I burned. So does it not work with home premium or did it just not burn right? PLEASE LEAVE ME A REPLY! I NEED MY LAPTOP BACK!!!

    33. ok Mahmoud Al-Qudsi so if its not a winrar file so why is it showing up on my computer once i downloaded it as i winrar file and plus this windows recovery disk is only the windows recovery tool and not a re-install of windows like everyone is thinking this windows recovery disk will only take you to the recovery of windows it will not install windows for you ok people and oh Mahmoud Al-Qudsi i have already downloaded and burned the windows recovery disk to disk in the rar file and it didnt do any thing but when i extracted it with winra then burned it to disk then i got some where thanks from darrell

    34. sorry Mahmoud Al-Qudsi i uninstalled my winrar and your right sorry m8 but still thsi is only a windows recovery tool and not the full install of windows ok people so if your windos didnt come pre-installed then this windows recovery disk wont work for you unless you did a back recovery to another hard drive on your computer or did a partition on the c drive of your computer so if you have not done any of this and you have lost the disks then this wont windwos recovery disk wont work for you ok

    35. Hello
Program worked but no OS or drives were listed. Dave suggested I used the ‘Load Drivers’ feature using drivers from the laptop manufacturer. My question is which drivers do I need to load? I could not find the drivers for the HP mini2131 laptop at HP.com Where do I get them from?

I have a friend that has the same HPmini 2131 laptop. Can I make a image of her laptop and load it to mine?

      Thanks for you help

    36. Im getting the strangest erros now. I put in the CD and it says files loading then I get blue screen. I turn off and back on comp and then the files dont even load they just go straight to the option menu. So far I have only hit the memory test tool to see if that would help and I got a Stop: oxc0000007 Boot/memtest.exe is missing. I am going to try and do the normal repair now but I have a feeling my computer is just really fucked.

    37. Okay this is so weird and now I really dont know what to do. Everytime I put in the disk it says loading files…They Load and then goes str8 to a blue screen. This didnt happen the first two times but now it is. Could a virus be getting into my memory or something causing it to block these new things im throwing at it?

    38. Wouldn’t it be better to offer the winload.exe file for download instead of the recovery tool, so people can just move the file they downloaded to Live CD, and into Vista/system32/? I am not sure if that would work, but I cannot get a ride to the nearest store (big enough to sell blank CDs), and I cannot find the vista installation CD. The only thing i do have is a bunch of Ubuntu Live CDs to boot from. Also I tried copying the recovery tool files to the usb method, but I need more detail on how to make it readable for the Master Boot thingy. Everytime I tried to load every usb option it hangs on the Searching for Data screen.

    39. Did not work for me, while loading files it stops at about 40% and thats it, I have to power down from there

    40. Hey! so i downloaded the recovery iso file and was able to boot up my computer. however, after i entered the product key an error window popped up and basically said the “install.wim” file on the D drive doesn’t exist. i don’t know what to do. Is there anyone that can help?

    41. Got the same problem as Snowghost. I run the disc – get the message “windows is downloading files” and then it just freezes about a third of the way thru.

    42. Hey I have a Compaq Presario c700 and it recently crashed and has the “no bootable device — insert boot disk” well I downloaded the 32 bit one but I don’t have another CD Burner (the only one I have is on my laptop that wont boot up) so what are the other alternatives can i do? I dont know if I can boot up using a USB. under the BIOS thing it says boot using USB DISKETTE KEY, is that the same thing?
      Please help 🙁
