Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    1. tayron thats the problem if you don’t have either the Vista installation CD or a spare blank CD, then you need to purchase one. I really think they should have added a usb method to this post. Not everyone is going to get the burning process right the first time, or have a spare blank CD around.

    2. Hi i have a advent pentium dual core 1.66gh pc and my original os was vista but one day i upgraded to windows 7 and it was not working properly so i installed ubuntu 10.10. i am wondering will this get rid of linux and restore vista

    3. I’ve just downloaded the 32bit recovery file.I loaded the disc into my laptop n try to boot it. Everything as per normal, and when i press any keys to boot from the cd/dvd, it will go to the windows loading file…..but after that i’m staring at a black screen with mouse pointers that move…nothing else. Can anyone help me with that?

      Before this, I’ve tried with the 64bit recovery file, i manage to load until system recovery page, however i can’t repair it due to certain error…can anyone help me with this?

      Thanks…

    4. I downloaded the version 32 bits from the Torrent site and attempted to fix the unbootable Vista laptop but the first screen asked for product key and I gathered the key off the laptop but the system responded the key is not valid!
      I beleived the repair kit failed to perform as owner claimed!

      Regards

    5. tom – columbus – ohio: the same happened to me!
      Does anyone know the product key???

      Thanksss!!!

    6. The product key is different for each purchasable DVD. In other words, if you don’t have the box or the number written down you pretty much can’t use the CD.

    7. hi dose this work for new hard drives? just replace one and it can’t read the original recovery disk.

      we should all email the computer maker demanding our recovery disk.

    8. Let me start off by saying a BIG THANK YOU to the Neosmart guys for this…Sony wants to charge me $75 for (theoretically) the Exact same disk.

      That being said, I’m havin some troubles too…after following all the steps above, and upon attempting installation, windows pops up a dialogue box that says

      “windows canno open the required file D:\Sources\Install.wim. The file does not exist. Make sure all files required for etc, etc….error code 0x80070002”

      Im pretty sure I followed the directions exactly as they were written, and used imgburn to copy the .iso to DVD. It burned just fine, and was verified by imgburn. Any suggestions? In the meantime I’m going to try the whole process over, maybe I just goofed some part up.

    9. im pretty desprate at this point i need all the help i can get i tryed both the vista 32 bit and 64 bit and i have my product key but it says this message
      THE INSTALLATION WAS CANCELED
      WINDOWS CANNOT OPEN THE REQUIRED FILE E:\SOURCES\INSTALL.WIM. THE FILE DOES NOT EXIST MAKE SURE ALL FILES REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION ARE AVAILABLE AND RESTART INSTALLATION ERROR CODE 0x80070002 what do i do

    10. can’t boot HP mini 2131 laptop. I get the ‘boot manager misssing’msg. I tried to boot from the Vista Recovery Download to do a repair all repair attempts fail. In the system recovery options there are no operating systems listed to choose from. “Load Drivers” appears to be a dead end. NEoSmart recommended that I load drivers from manufacturer but I don’t which drivers I need. ANd how do I load executeables files when I find the right drivers.

      Tried “bootrec /fixboot” from the command line reports it was successful, but didn’t fix the problem. I attempted the rebuild boot manager as well.

    11. Hello

      THanks!

      What am I doing wrong?

    13. Hi,

      I got this and burnt it to a DVD. I inserted it into my laptop, pressed F10, chose my DVD and hit enter. It then said to press any key to continue, which I did. It then said “Windows loading files” or something similar to that.

      After it finished loading, it goes to the black screen where it has the loading bar and says “Microsoft Corporation” below. But then that’s all it does. It stays there.

      That is the problem with my laptop that I am trying to resolve.

      What can I do or am I doing wrong?

      Thanks,
      Brett

    15. Hi there,

      1st, thks for this tool, awsome…I think the same, we do the purchase and then, if something goes wrong…”Please Purchase WinVista NOW”, “Contact The Manufacter” etc..

      I’m downloading the ecovery disc right now, and i noticed the number of broken computers we have in this page…

      It’s very dificult to keep up with so many requests but i think, that 1st of all, you should check (most of you), if he problem is not on your Hardware.

      Most of the errors tha ocurred to you, can be caused by thing like:

      – Damaged HDD (Fixable or not);
      – Bad Master/Slave Solution (in case your HDD is IDE);
      – Damaged MotherBoard.

      Since this web site helped my (thks a lot =D), i can try to help some of you.

      rab_zorgue@hotmail.com for any questions (Inclusive How to Work wth this Recovery Disk and real time suport [TeamViewer])

      Cheers and thank you much. =)

      PS: I’ve checked again before closing the page, and i saw a USB solution request.

      It’s your lucky day pall.

      1st – Copy all of the files to your USB Flash Drive;
      2nd – Make shure that you put the same name of the ISO file on your drive;
      3rd – Reboot your PC and enter BIOS (Pressing DEL, F1 or The key your pronpt shows);
      4th – Look for your Boot Setting and change the priority to something like this:

      1 – Removable Drive (USB) XPTO
      2 – HDD SATA/IDE XPTO
      3 – CD/DVD Drive XPTO

      NOTE: XPTO represents a Random Drive Name;

      5th – Exit your bios and save this settings.(The computer will reboot automatically);
      6th – Your Computer showld prompt the same message as if it was loadind the Recovery Disk from a CD/DVD.

      =) <3

    16. Hi wanted to thank you for the Vista recovery torrent( 32 bit) I had the same problem as others have described plus one extra twist. My built in CD Rom disappeared and it wouldn’t read the disk. I opened up my box unplugged the CD Rom and I’m guessing my system thought there was new hardware and recognized it,put in the disk and all was repaired
      Thanks!
      Barry

    17. Hi I have put put the disc in and it has had some effect – previously I was just getting a compaq logo folled by a flashing cursor in the top left of the screen – now it says ‘press any key to boot from CD or DVD’ but when I press a key nothing happens. Any thoughts?

    18. Hi Folks,

      My Vista Gateway laptop WD Scorpio harddrive appears to be dead or dying. Doesn’t boot. Had a geek friend with linux loaded look at it and he said it only showed as having 29GB (should have 120GB) My goal is saving data from my documents and desktop.

      I’ve got a new harddrive all installed and loaded with the gateway recovery disks which only had the option of full factory restore. I’ve got your vista 32 bit recovery disk downloaded and made-THANK YOU! booted up to testdrive command line access of hard drive with my working drive, so I’d be more likely to have success with recovery of my data.

      I am not seeing the command line option on the recovery disk menu…only the full restore and repair options. A little wary of repair until I get a better feel for what’s going on.

      QUESTION: How do I access the command line?
      Am I correct in understanding that the repair option won’t hurt my data?

      Thanks,

      Aurora

    19. okay i upgraded to windows 7 on a windows vista laptop i hate windows 7 but apparently it deleted my vista partition so if i download this will it put vista back on my computer??????

    20. Is this ISO image made from a Dell PC, because I have a Toshiba laptop, that windows would just load to a black screen and just mouse. I used this Vista 64bit recovery and let it perform the checks. When I rebooted now it’s telling me that my Dell pc needs to activate windows now or later?

      Is there a way to clear this up, I didn’t want it to replace files or at least recover my windows, tried the system restore with this disc and still needs to activate.

    21. THANKS VERY MUCH IT WORKED. I really appreciate your help. The donation button does not work however, if it becomes available I will donate. Thanks again, SB.

    22. Thank you. “BOOTMGR is Missing” error and the system wouldn’t load the 2008 Server installation disc (would hang at “Windows is Loading Files…”). Popped your disc in and five minutes later all my problems are fixed and Win 2008 Server is now booting normally.

    23. Need advice…not computer savvy at all. My computer is inoperable and says i need to reinstall the operating disk. Black screen is all that comes up. Is the download for the “Recovery Disk” the only thing I need to get it up and running again?

    24. Hello,

      Thanks for the great resource and programs! I got the rescue iso file and will be making a disk to try, but I’m worried about the Wondows key thing. Will I need a new Windows key to access Windows after using the rescue disk?

      Anyone know?

      Thanks!

      Scott

    25. i downloaded the file for the recovery disc but all i got was 1 1kb iso image file that wont work. what am i doing wrong?

    26. Hi again,

      This is a follow-up to my 11/21 post…I did figure out that the command line option is under “Repair.” Tried it out on working drive so I’d know what I should see.

      When I booted up on CD with non-functioning hard drive (WD Scorpio 120G). It loaded windows from CD, then went to the windows copyright line with the moving yellow bar and the drive access light came on; I got the blue screen saying “A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer…” Sometimes is says
      disk.sys
      PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA

      sometimes it gives me no details. unable to get to safe mode. BIOS doesn’t have options for turning off caching or shadowing…

      Any info would be appreciated.

      Thanks,

      aurora

      ps: I’m just looking to get some data off it, if possible without emptying my savings, if sending it out is next step, I’d appreciate recommendations. Thanks

    27. I am tryin to download the 32bit torrent it downloads through frostwire then when i burn it to a disk its saves as quick time play, when i try and reboot with disk it doesnt do any thing

    28. i have a hp pavilion a1712n with windows vista that wont boot tried the rovery disk and nothing it sounds like it is stuck in sleep mode . i can hear it loading but it dosnt get past the cd/dvd drive i tried unpluging the drive to see if it would continue to load but it didnt. i can use the key board to go into the bios or any thing any ideas

    29. I’ve used Roxio burning software to burn the CD (this is the only software available to me), and the first time my laptop didn’t read it at all, while the 2nd time I tried to make it bootable and my laptop said “Operating System Missing” – what’s going on here?

    30. Hello I loaded the disk in my toshiba satellite l305 it ran fine until it gets to the part to load vista.. it asks for a product key I enter it and it keeps saying invalid.. I even went as far as calling microsoft and getting a new product key… still nothing… can someone please help ,e out.. I even did the avg disk recommended up above.. thank you!

    31. hi…. im having a problem i install the disk everything goes well it ask for the product key i put it click next then it says installation was canceled. any changes that were made to your computer during installation process will not be saved.

      also says windows cannot open the required file D:\sources\install.wim. the files does not exist. Make sure all files required for installation are available, restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070002… PLEASE HELPPPP.

      Im not sure if it has to do with anything but i had bought a new hard drive because there was a problem with my old one. please help and thanks

    32. I just got a Toshiba Satellite from my girlfriends mom. She didn’t want it anymore because “it just wont work”. Well, she was right. It starts up and runs okay (a little blinky) but any connection to the internet wont work. I have wireless at my house, it reads the signal strength as “great”. All connection names and keys are correct. Wireless switch on the front of the machine is on. Firewall is on but not over the top. Device manager says that the wireless modem is working properly. But it’s not. If I open a browser (tried IE & Chrome) it says that it is unable to establish a connection. So that aside, I tried using the small amount of network knowledge I have to run the ipconfig from the DOS screen and that just closes down immediately. So I think something here is amiss. But I’m not sure what. Would the recovery disc be a good idea? Or is there something else I’m missing? I’d like to just wipe the system clean and start fresh.

      Thanks in advance.

    33. Hmm, well, I’ve downloaded the disc. The correct bit. Loaded it into the laptop and nothing. Nothing at all. Whenever I click on the disc, it does nothing. So, I tried restarting the computer and running boot option. When I get to that point with the disc in, I select “boot from cd/dvd”. Then the machine think about trying to not be a piece of crap but then brings me to these error messages, “PXE-E61 : media test failure, check cable” (which I didn’t think a cd had a cable) and error message 2, “PXE-M0F : Exiting PXE ROM” and then vista opens as it normally does. Rather disfunctionally. I just want to sweep it. I figured this would be the way to do it, but I guess I’m not doing something right.
      BTW, the cd/dvd drive work fine. And as far as I could tell, the disc was created properly.

      So, what now?

    34. I was having Windows Recovery Error after trying to upgrade to AVG Free 2011. None of the suggestions at AVG support site works but after some searching, I was directed here. And was able to solve the problem after I performed a Startup repair. Thanks again for being a life saver!

    35. I had vista home premium. It went berserk when I updated with SP pack. I borrowed a crack windows 7 and now working on my lap top. I kept the partitions, so still I have backup of vista which I have made earlier in D:drive. Is there any way I can go back to my vista home premium since I don’t want to use crack version?

    36. file:\windows\system32\config\system
      Status: 0xc000014c
      Info: windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt

      I have this error, does putting the cd fix the error?

    37. I’ve never used a torrent client and I don’t have too much knowledge on this but I got the bootmgr error on my gateway pc and Idk what to do. Any help will be greatly appreciated thanks

    38. I have everything done except the actuall burning of the ISo file to the blank disk. Will one recordable DVD be enough to hold the entire recovery file?

    39. I downloaded the recovery CD for vista 32-bit. I get an error when I try to fix it, saying something like my disk usage was corrupted. and then when i try to reinstall it, it says that a certain file was missing. help?

    40. Downloaidng via bit-torrent is not so bad if you provided some confirmation of the file security such as the SHA-1 hash. Otherwise, it is very risky.

      Please update this page with the SHA-1 hash.

      Thanks.

    41. What is ‘seeding’ and why is it doing it? It says it is uploading but surely I need to download? Has the download completed already? I have been trying to read up on torrent downloading but nobody seems to have any FAQ in English lol its all tech talk…I just want to fix my computer…not be blinded by science 😀
