Disk for recovery & repair
If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.
Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.
Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.
It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.
The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.
The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

Vinnie:
You need to make sure you are burning the disk as an iso file. CD -R is fine .
Try either ImgBurn or BurnAware , both are free , easy to use and work well.

These are not recovery disks, they are repair disks. if you need a recovery disk you have a very serious problem as HP does not support machines over 5 years after manufacture . It may be you can get one from a reseller.
The very first thing you do when you buy a computer is burn a recovery disk, the very first!
Chances are you do not need a recovery disk and if you start the machine by hitting control plus F11 it will let you access the recovery partition if it is still there and not corrupted. Back up your data first by booting the computer with a puppy linux disk , I would use the 431 retro version. This will {should if its not corrupted} let you copy your data to an external drive.
Once you have the data try the control F11 at boot up , if that does not work try hitting F8 repeatedly at boot up. If that does not work try the repair disk offered here for the system you have , 32 or 64 bit system running Vista.
If one of these works tell it to do the complete job, wipe the Vista partition and completely reinstall just as new. Then BURN A RECOVERY DISK BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE!!!
If it does not work and you cannot find a recovery disk there are 2 choices, buy a copy of windows and install it and manually add the drivers and then “ghost” the drive in lieu of a recovery disk. Or do the logical thing and dump windows, install Linux and be done with it.
Is any way to restart from a pen driave?
I´ve copied the files in my pen drive and the pc boots from ther but I got an error and.
My cd.rom is not working, so the only way to recover is booting form the pen drive.
Please help me!!!
thank you
Rick:
Booting windows from a flash drive is pretty high level programming. You would do better to buy a USB bridge that will allow you to hook a cd or dvd drive to a USB port or buy a USB dvd rom.
Linus is simple to run from a flash drive, windows is extremely difficult even for experienced users.
Thanks for this recovery disk.
You made my weekend a lot easier.
You rock, respect. -0- _0_ -0-

Hi !
I tried downloading the image on a dvd and also by mounting image with Alcohol52.
But in both the cases, there is no install.wim file in the Source folder.
Can anyone please help me that where am i going wrong.
Thanks
Neha
You need to download it to a file and use a program like IMGBurn to burn it as an iso
All I can say is THANKS for this! I have just successfully recovered a very damaged installation of VISTA 32 bit on a Toshiba Equium with a very corrupted boot-sector.
Booted the laptop with this disc in the drive, chose to “repair my installation” and it found the damaged BCD table, repaired it and rebooted right back to the desktop on the first try. Now fully up and running again.
One other thing, it DIDN’T hose the factory restore partitions, it just restored the BCD table and left the rest of the drive alone. Very impressed!
THANK YOU!!!
Hello and greetings from Australia.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium (I am certain of this) installed on a 2yo Medion PC. The PC has been running like a dream, up-to-date anti-virus etc.
Recent Windows “upgrades” have caused my PC not to boot past a black screen
My Windows Recovery Disk supplied with the PC doesn’t boot, stating that it is not compatible with the installed version of Windows.
I then searched the ‘net for a more “recent” Vista recovery disk and came across this software. I downloaded utorrent, ran it and downloaded the .iso file and burned the .iso file to DVD.
When I boot from the DVD in my PC, and choose “repair my computer”, I see that “Microsoft Windows Vista” appears in the list of Operating Systems on its own ie it’s the only choice. Not “Vista Home Premium” – just “Vista”.
When I select it and click on the Next button, I receive the message:
“This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows.”
The only other option is to “Load drivers” – I am not certain of what this means in the context of trying to recover my PC.
I honestly do not know what to do next. Can anyone shed some light?
Thanks in advance, Y
Okay, All of the above worked. But whenever I go to restore the system to factory settings, its asks me to enter my Vista Activation Key. I do not have this key. Is there a way to get around having to enter the key just to recover my computer, or is there a way to get the key? I looked underneath the laptop, but the ink on all the stickers are rubbed away. Please help! Thanks!
I did everything you guys said with patience and you saved my computer thak you very much god bless you!
I tried to use this recovery to re-boot my system, and I changed my bios to boot from a disk in the CD drive, but then it comes up with a screen that ultimately eventually says: “Operating System Not Found” Is there something that I did wrong? I tried to burn the CD from a Mac, would that have made a difference? Should I burn it from a PC? What are some other things that could be done to help fix the problem? Any help is greatly appreciated!
HP Paviliion 32 bit Windows Vista Home Premium – SP1
I haven’t started the burning process yet as I have a few questions.
1. I do not have a USB flashdrive, nor do I have a CD/DVD drive. However, does anyone one know if it will work with an external harddrive like MAXTOR? I’m familiar with the booting process so that’s not a problem, but I’m not sure if an external harddrive or maybe an Ipod (?) would be ok or not… Does anyone have an idea? And if is possible, then which burning programme would you recommend besides from ImgBurn?
2. I have downloaded the torrent file and extracted it to a folder (named the same as the extracted file). I’m using ImgBurn however when I choose the .wim /.isd or bootmgr (tried all three just in case) in the browse section – ImgBurn suddenly props up a message saying it’s incompatible. (Unsupported file format)
So my questions is to Frank Cox: If the file is downloaded, how can you burn it as an ISO file when the burning programme doesn’t recognize it as eligible? Nobody’s mentioned whether the file should be extracted first or not – but I figured since it’s a RAR then that’s sort of given. The funny thing is that if I browse up the RAR file – the error message doesn’t appear and the browsed link has suddenly .ISO at the end. In other words a ‘zip’ file is accepted?
Lastly, I have HP Pavilion Home Premuim Vista 32-bit SP1 right now. Can I install the Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit recovery with SP3 on my computer without it changing my files – just fixes the damages? Or would that make matters worse?
Appreciate any help 🙂
what is the iso files? when i download and extract for vista 32 bit,i dont see any iso file. just .wim .bin and .sdi… no .iso .am i missing something?
i have the same EXACT problem as tghe guy above me!
except the woerd cd ipod and hard drive thingy…
OMG, Just wanted to comment to say * I LOVE YOU* I’ve had some seriously bad luck with hardware (sending back for replacements and such) thus i’ve installed and updated vista a LOT in the past 7 days, then finally my hardware is OK and i feek my install up like a total nablet. THIS SAVED MY ASS. thank you XxxXXXxxxxXXXXxXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Having some trouble. On the “install windows” page I choose “repair your computer” option, but then it does nothing. Please help.
I can not get the repair disk download to properly run 🙁 HELP PLEASE
I went to the SystemDiscs site (will pay for the disc in return for my saved time), but it doesn’t say which version of Vista is offered. I only want the Vista 32- or 64- discs if they are SP2.
I downloaded the ISOs through BitTorrent, but judging from the dates (2007 for the files on the 32-bit; 2008 for the files on the 64-bit) the 32-bit is original Vista and the 64-bit is POSSIBLY Service Pack 1.
Will you be making the Service Pack 2 versions of these available?
It works!!!!!!!!
wasnt sure it was legit. but was desparate and went against my best judement.
Glad i did!!!!
The recovery tools for the RTM, SP1, and SP2 are identical, Kevin.
MagicISO gives me a error message “ISO action Failed”
MagicISO is one of the buggiest programs I’ve ever seen. Never use it.
Use ImgBurn. Instructions at http://j.mp/ImgBurn
i used this once and the screen went blank but then i reset the computer even though the screen went blank and that was what it was supposed to do. i put it in again and then no drivers came up so i clicked load drivers and i could not find any setup information please help thanks.
About install.wim from earlier message:
“Install.wim is for the Windows installation. There isn’t an “issue” here, you just need to click the repair option instead of install. Asking for install.wim is essentially asking for a full-fledged installation CD, which obviously can’t be freely distributed.”
This worked! Thank you so much! Geek Squad wanted to charge me $500 to back up my system and put in a new hard-drive after telling me the entire hard-drive was fried. I’m glad I waited before making that decision and found this site in the mean time.
Yall rock <3!
The problem im having now is the laptop seems to start up ok.i select the OS that has been recovered that all goes ok.but now all i get is a black blank screen with the mouse pointer going around and i see no life from the HDD light.
Can anyone help please….
many thanks……
You need to make Pay Pal an option for donations, I do not mind at all making one but not with a credit card. The disk is a real useful tool.
Hi Frank,
Actually, we *only* accept donations via PayPal!
I have win vista with repair/recovery corrupted. got the repair on CD and it worked! thank you.. Remember guys it has to be on CD not flashdriver
Did not work for me.
The system recovery disk loaded windows system files then the vista started loading but does not finish the load. I can not go to the repair option menu… process. just stuck. Why?
Hi there,

thanks in advance
Laptop won’t start up, gives the message BOOTMGR not found or something. Burnt the recovery disc, clicked on the Startup recovery option and it does its thing. Then it says it cannot repair this computer automatically 🙁
What do?!
Hi,
The recovery does not work for me. First, it says it cannot find the install.wim file. Then, I tried the repair function but this does not work either because it cannot find an operating system to repair. I think the problem is due to a earlier recovery trial which deleted my operating system but did not manage to reinstall it.
Any help appreciated!!! thanks
Which is the file I need to burn, is it the boot.wim file in the sources folder?
better yet, is there a USB version of this file? or can I run this one from USB? It appears there is a problem with my disk drive, my computer doesn’t give an option to boot from dvd/cd
I did a factory restore on my hp laptop and when I hit start a few seconds later it restarted my computer and give me a 1002 error and now i can’t boot it, im thinkin that the boot file was erased
It did not work for me!!
did not worl say missing file \sources\Install.wim. T^his file does not exist.and gives error code 0x8007002.can someone tell me what I’m doing wrong.
I have a Compaq desktop with Windows Vista on it, but I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside it. Now it won’t let me get on Vista. I don’t know what to do! I don’t know which Vista it is either, the 32-bit or the 64-bit. My father also decided that he wanted me to get rid of the Ubuntu. I’m not sure if that would fix the problem or not, but I’m afraid that I still wouldn’t be able to get on… Please help me!
Followed all the instructions, downloaded the .iso file, image burn, etc. It gives me an ‘operation succesfull’ fromm imgburn but when trying to boot from the cd (the bios is set to boot from cd first) gives me an ‘operation system not found’
do i have to download it with limewire? cause it keeps pulling limewire up everytime i try to burn the program
Help pleaseee, whenever i boot my pc i only get a black screen, plus even if i boot it with the recovery disk i downloaded from here i still get a black screen, help plz!
This is garbage. There is no explanation of what to do after you burn the image to the disc. Of course, you stick it in the computer, then what. It goes to the install/repair page, but the damn 64bit one keeps giving me a message that it isn’t compatible (even though my laptop IS x64). And yes, I click repair my comp, and not Install.. And no, the 32bit one doesn’t work either.
I installed the wrong version of an antivirus and my computer was hosed. I ran this disc and it repaired whatever was messed up and I was able to successfully remove the antivirus software and install AVG instead. Lifesaver!
If you can’t get the torrent working don’t sweat it. For $9.75 you can get a direct download here and burn your own CD if you have access to a different computer: http://systemdiscs.com/
Sales links removed
do we lose the stuff already that is on the laptop, such as pictures and shit?
(by now it is too many comments to read through, so i’m sorry if this has already been asked!)
