Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    4. I had the legendary “winload.exe corrupted or missing” error at a point in my life (a while back) and the Vista Recovery DVD helped me to get out of a situation that seemed impossible.

Thank you very much for providing these!

    5. Thanks so much! I had messed up my system 32 folder and everything in it when messes with parted magic.

    6. Hey.. I have the hp TouchSmart notebook with the genuie windows vista, But a few months ago I changed it to windows 7.. 7. I downloaded Vista recovery 64 bit and when the installation process starts it asks for the Product Key???

    8. This seemed to work, except that after I entered my key, it says that the install.wim is missing? and according to the torrent and the .iso file, it is. Can someone help me?

    9. I deleted my windows vista os off my computer and tried installing windows 7 from here but it wont work, does it mean i cant? if so ill just use the windows vista one and regain it

    10. After a complete disk erasure of my Windows Vista 32 bit program on my Toshiba Satellite I was at my wits end, my Windows would not open, I found that while the Toshiba provided disks would reinstall the OS, that the errors remained. I found this site and was able, using my older PC, which was running XP, created a recovery disk using your precise instructions and suggested downloads. The first two disks were DVD type and would not run on my damaged laptop, finally I reread the instructions and saw the disk required a “CD”, I made one and on first running, I had my Toshiba back, as new, now I am reloading favorite programs, all my photos, and the laptop is happy once again.
Many thanks to you for this service, I feel so much more comfortable with my ability to overcome adversity with a computer thanks to you and the other folks who’s comments guided me. At 68 years old and of limited “computer geek” knowledge of these things, I feel like superman. I will be making a contribution–this was a great education for me.

    14. Here’s the issue that I am having with my computer. I have an HP a1710n Pavillion desktop computer and a while back I wanted to increase the storage on my hard drive from the existing 320GB to a 1TB hard drive and my buddy said that he could transfer everything with absolutely no problems. Well, there were problems. The biggest problem was the fact that while he was supposed to be transferring my information, he was also online and doing a million other things instead of concentrating on the task at hand. In the end, he completely erased all of the existing information on the original hard drive and never transferred anything to the new one. My computer came with 3 system restoration discs that don’t work anymore. The discs will read all discs and then it will proceed to the “writing to hard drive” but it will never get beyond 1% written to hard drive…it just seems to freeze at that point. I have let it try and run overnight but it still is in the same spot in the morning when I check it again. He gave me a bootleg copy of Vista Ultimate which will run on the computer and do all of the updates but I don’t feel comfortable using a bootleg copy of Vista and in addition to that, I recently had installed a copy of a new Windows program and when I went to uninstall the program, things went south on my computer at that point so I had to re-run the “bootleg” copy of Vista and do my system restore that way. My question is this, will this disc allow my legitimate HP software run correctly or do you have another solution for me? Please keep in mind that I am not a complete idiot around the computer but then again, I’m not Bill Gates, either…Thanks in advance…Dan

    15. OH my goodness, thanks dude… I was able to recover the Dell Inspiron 1525 with the iso vista recovery disc. I’m forever thankful for building this site! I contaced Dell and they told me that the laptop’s warranty had expired and needed to call the Expired Technical Support department at 1-888-261-1716.

Can I had this site in my blog?

      Thanks again!

A bit of history of my client’s problem:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

      File: \Boot\BCD
      Status: 0xc000000f

Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

    16. I downloaded the 64-bit and 32-bit and it keeps asking for a product key and mine will not work for it?? any help??

    17. Hi

    19. My daughter’s lapop is a Toshiba Stellite L300 (that’s the only ID info I can see).
She was using it without problems and it crashed. Now any attempt to load eventually ends up on a blue error screen, only “useful” info (not for me!) is at the bottom –
      Technical information:
      ***STOP: 0x00008086 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
I’ve tried normal and repair mode, with or without the downloaded disc, all end up the same
/I’ve also tried safe mode, a blue screen flashes a few minutes in, Itoo fast to read but I assume as above, then it restarts and invites me to try repair mode, which stops as before.

      Any ideas?

    20. Hi there.

I have an HP Pavilion a6600f desktop and whenever I put in the recovery disk, it will give me the message “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD.’ Problem is, when I do that, all that comes up is a black screen that says “Windows is loading files…” with a white bar loading across the bottom, but it doesn’t actually boot from the disk afterwards. Instead, it tries to boot up Windows and continues to freeze on the loading screen with the green bar. Anybody else have this issue?

    21. I have done a System Restore back to factory settings etc which was successful. But, when Windows Vista tries to start for the first time, it comes up with a blank screen saying “Please wait a moment while windows prepares to start for the first time………
This screen just hangs and is on a black/blank background. I believe but cannot prove that the problem started witha Windows Update last week. RAM is fine, have checked RAM seating and graphics card. Even put a new hardrive in but no luck. My only other thought may be a problem with the graphics driver, buy why?. It should be back to factory.

Anyone else have offers on this one. Its an HP m9080a running windows vista.

    22. My son?s Vaio laptop, VGN-FW21M with Vista Home Premium OMAct Sony Corporation, doesn?t start-up anymore. This happened after some updates a few weeks ago and a delete of some entries after a virus scan. We tried to recover using the Sony recovery possibilities and tried to load the BIOS but it does not solve the problem. We don?t have a recovery disc.

Can this problem be solved using a Vista recovery disc? On the bottom of the laptop is the Vista OEM key info. The laptop is from 2009.

Can the download go to an external hard drive or can it only to a DVD or CD?

    23. I know that you create a bootable USB, but could i burn these files to a USB ???????????????

    24. Google is the GOD and you are the Jeses..
I was about to pay my hard earned money to the cheap fellow (MS) for another OS CD ..
you saved my A$$ dude .. I don’t know what this disk did, it just ran inside for less then 2 min while I was playing with different options it provides and I saw the option as “repair windows vista (recovered)” in some option .. and I just restarted the computer and everything was just fine as 3 days ago ..

      I must say … Thanks a lot .. I awe you a beer .. or maybe 12

    25. Hi all – I downloaded the 64bit Torrent, but I am unable to open any set up files from the RAR. I click to open the files and it says Windows cannot open this do you want to search on the internet?
Any help would be great 🙂

    26. Downloaded CD, Inserted. Ok, My PC doesnt need repairing from what I can see, I need the serial Key.

How do i find one? Please Help my pc is totally screwed without it

    27. Trying to use the disk, but there is no operating system to select on that screen. Trying to use the command prompt keeps saying something about a device on the system is not functioning and I/O errors.

    28. I downloaded the file and burnt the ISO disk as instructed, but when I try to boot I get it looking for an ethernet connection then timing out. I have gone into the bos and told it to boot off the cd and also chose it from the F12 menu…. Please help….

    29. What does it mean when you run the Recovery disk and it goes through the process but still when attempting to boot it tells me that: “Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt.”

Makes it appear that the ‘fix’ did not fix.

any other ideas on how to fix the system registry file?

      thanks

    30. Sue,
What does it mean when you run the Recovery disk and it goes through the process but still when attempting to boot it tells me that: “Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt.”

Makes it appear that the ‘fix’ did not fix.

I had the same error message after the same process was attempted multiple times. Of course, this was with the “Recovery CD’s” that I paid $$ to get from Lenovo. After an hour on the phone, I was told that the CD/DVD they sent to me wasn’t any good and I would have to try another CD (that they would send), but it was without SP1 and it would completely wipe out my files and re-install windows.

So, long story short, your CD/DVD may not actually have the recovery options on it.
Good luck, to you. Any CS people out there who read this, just tell the truth when you DON’T KNOW THE ANSWER. It’s better to admit you don’t know that to prove you’re an idiot.

    31. My laptops vista serial isn’t working when the recovery cds prompt for serial ,anyone know why?
I seen others are having this same issue on this

    32. I burnt the ISO file as instructed but when I run that from the DVD drive it first gives me a msg ‘press any key to boot from DVD-ROM’ and then it says ‘windows is loading files’ and after this I get a screen which says “Windows Boot Manager” and under that “windows failed to start. A Recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

      1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer
      2. Choose your language settings and then click Next
      3. Click ‘Repair your computer’

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

      File: \windows\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe
      Status:0xc0000221

Info: Windows failed to load because the kernel is missing or corrupt

There are options at the bottom saying “ENTER=Continue ESC=Exit

If you hit continue you keep cycling through this screen again and again and ESC will exit out to your old repeated boot screens.

Seems to me that whoever wrote this VIRUS has gotten smarter over the years and made fixes to overcome the solution ISO recovery disk on this website

    33. My HP compaq crashed after trying to format an external hard drive. The screen went black and kept saying err1 err3 error, insert boot disk and press any key. Of course with windows Vista I wasn’t provided with a boot disk and after fiddling with BIOS settings it still didnt work so I downloaded the windows vista service pack boot disk from this site. I did a start up repair and it worked! recovered all the data without going back to factory settings. Thank you so very much. Really appreciate it. You saved me time and money. 🙂

    34. no puedo grabar el iso , ya que el grabador no lo reconoce como imagen….=(

    35. I burnt the iso onto my disc but the bootimage says WIm and is just a blank piece of paper. I burnt it onto a DVD-R what am I doing wrong please? I am really stuck here thanks.

    36. i think this is refering to the product key that is shown on the back of your laptpop or somewhere on your pc

    37. iv tried using this recovery disk file to fix problems with my laptop but its not working and im having doubts whether my problem is one that can be fixed using these methods

my laptop starts up but then takes me to a disk check up where they see whether all files are present, i think. it recovers or tries to recover any deleted files. after this everything is normal although slower and as soon as i get to the login page it takes about 1 minute for the laptop to freeze.

i dont know what to do… can anyone help?

    38. i’m wondering will the disc still work even after finish copying it , it said failed but the recovery is already on the disk

    39. I know this may come as a shock, but after repairing 1000’s of machines, through hard drive upgrades, windows repairs antivirus scanners, etc. I can say that there no longer a way to ‘save’ an old installation of Windows.
Bugs – Trojans, Viruses, worms, Rootkits – they are all too complicated and complex to ‘clean’. It is best to simply back up your files and try hard to find the ‘factory installation’ disks, or you may have a hidden re-installation partition.

Most machines from OEM’s like ACER, DELL, Compaq, HP, Lenovo – most have windows machines with a recovery partitions – especially if they don’t ship with the installation CD’s. Sometimes you have to boot using the F8 key and sometimes you have to press buttons before you see the DELL or Compaq screen disappear when first starting the computer. Check the support site of the vendor who makes the machine, for details.
This recovery partition will bring the computer back to FACTORY state. Restoring to a Factory State will remove all files that were personal to you. Let me repeast that:
Restoring to a Factory State will remove all files that were personal to you.

SO be sure you are ready to wipe the data, by backing up everything you want to save.
Perform this factory restore only AFTER you save your important data to a backup device like external hard drive.

If you want to save your important data, you should go to another computer that is on the Internet, and download an image file – also called an ISO image file – to burn to a CD or DVD. These are also called liveCD’s. The preferred brands for this recovery trick is are either Puppy Linux or Knoppix. Check the article onthe site

      pendrivelinux dot com slash using-unetbootin-to-create-a-linux-usb-from-linux

Bring an EXTERNAL USB 2.0 hard drive to copy your files over once you launch your Knoppix or PuppyLinux.. (You can install these on a dedicated 4GB USB stick, too, but that is slightly more complicated for some people)

See the website distrowatch for links to these specific operating systems.
You download the ISO, not the torrent if you do not know what a torrent is.

These LiveCD’s are not designed to install over your windows system, but designed to allow you to reach into your computer files within the failing installation of windows, and recover files within your hard drive – without starting windows. Most viruses, while running in windows, try to install themselves on USB sticks. If you are running on Puppy or Knoppix, you will not be accidentally launching the infection.
Have a computer geek friend BURN the .ISO file to a DVD for you. Or you can go to the website pendrivelinux dot com

      Check the article onthe site

      pendrivelinux dot com slash using-unetbootin-to-create-a-linux-usb-from-linux

You will need to backup – everything under all the used old accounts on the Windows drive – for windows XP:
      C:\Documents.and Settings\[YourUserName]\Desktop
      C:\Documents.and Settings\[YourUserName]\My Documents
People that use outlook will want to grab a copy of their PST files:
      C:\Documents.and Settings\[YourUserName]\Local Settings\Application Data\Outlook\

These locations are slightly different for Windows7 and Vista users.

If you are using quicken or quickbooks, you will have to backup those files, too. They could be almost anywhere in your computer but the name of the file you want is not Sample Company, but something like Pepsi Cola Company file.

Just because you clean a computer, doesn’t mean that you should believe it is completely clean of any infection. If it is running, it may just be for a short time. Best to backup everything before another problem comes on the machine.

It is ALWAYS better to reinstall an operating system by FORMATTING and reinstalling again – or replacing windows with a more secure operating system like openSUSE or Ubuntu – which both have a TON of support for most computers. They have browsers like Mozilla’s Firefox and they are safer than Windows. If your machine is really old, or your computer only has 512MB’s of RAM (1/2 a GB) you may consider installing Puppy Linux on the machine, or Lubuntu 11.04

      Just my two cents.
      Good Luck

    40. i downloaded the torrent file but when i opened it in winzip to extract the files there was no .iso file to be found

    41. Thank you so much. You totally saved my sanity! Thanks for caring enough to share your excellent computer knowledge with us.

    42. I have a gateway ML6232 laptop. I got the dreaded “bootmgr is missing” press ctrl+alt+del to restart error message. I downloaded Easy BCD 1st and tried it, nothing happened. I then downloaded Windows Vista 32 bit recovery disc through Utorrent, I put the disc in my E drive and still nothing. I can get into BIOs, but that is all. It won’t even let me get into dos prompt. Any help resolving this would be a huge help. I don’t have the recovery disc that came with my laptop. PLEASE HELP…

    43. I was badly surprised this morning with the “no bootable device — insert boot disk and..” on my vista, but this program fixed it.

      Thanks guys.

    44. The recoverydisc don’t work.
I still get boot mngr missing
      what do i do now?

    45. its works but i need the product key to finish installing windows ,any help with that will be great

    46. well, I have HP Compaq Presario v3000 and it failed to boot today and showing error \boot\bcd status 0xc000000f.
I try putting in the recovery disk, it gave me the message “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD.’ when I do that, all that comes up is a black screen that says “Windows is loading files…” with a white bar loading across the bottom, but it doesn’t actually boot from the disk afterwards. the mouse pointer appear on the vista-green background but there’s nothing that i can click, such as the ‘next’ button or even the select language button. it continues to freeze on the empty-vista-green background.
i already tried with two other different vista disk, but the result still the same.

      can someone help me please?

    47. I cannot find the place to download the windows vista recovery disc.
      Any advice ?
