Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    2. Well, my problem is that I can only access the internet through a game I downloaded from yahoo. I figure that maybe I also downloaded a virus. Because when I try to go on the internet it says “That webpage cannot be displayed”, and another thing is my computer also says something about files are corrupted or damaged. How do I go by fixing this problem? Also I displaced/lost the CD/DVD to reinstall Windows Vista back to factory setting. But I am on the internet, thru the game port.

      It says :
      1. Enter your windows installation disc and restart your cpu
2.Choose your language settings and then click next
      3.Click “Repair Your Computer”

Info: Windows failed to load because the NLS data is missing or corrupt

    10. I have just paid for and downloaded the Windows Vista Recovery Disc and followed instructions to put it onto a cd however this is not recognised as a reboot disc. I know my CD drive is working as it will let me run some diagonistics from my partner’s Windows 7 recovery disc but will not do the full recovery from it. I’m not sure it is working correctly and would appreciate a refund as it does not do what it says on the tin.

    18. ChristianBJ: I had the same situation: SATA disk unreadable. When Vista Recovery prompted to select a driver, I just canceled out of that dialog and clicked next. It then said “Unknown OS” but still offered the option to repair. It spent about an hour doing CHKDISK and was able to restore my disk so that the system could boot.

    19. Hey guys, trying to get Aspire 5315 to work, windows will not boot at all, getting error message ( windows failed to load because a required file is missing or corrupt) also says (file acpi.sys) and (status: 0xc0000098). Ive tried alt+f10,f8,f12 and no luck….no disc was included….trying to run (live linux) but cant get internet radio to work either to run live linux….please help!

    20. I have Vista Ultimate x86 working, but with some WUDFHost files damaged (no wireless internet).
I do have a “Recovery CD” (downloaded and burned), but the system doesn’t want to boot from it. I get a black screen and the CD is spinning on and off in an endless cycle. Booting from HDD/F8 gets me to Advanced Boot Options, but the Repair option isn’t there. According to MS, only booting from an installation CD (maybe “Recovery CD”) brings up the Repair option.
Is there a way to resolve it?

    21. I downloaded the recovery disk for windows vista and changed the boot from to the cd but still get blue screen on start up

    23. is this vista x64 recovery disk a live boot? meaning that it will boot up from the CD/DVD and not use/install to my hard disk? once i put the disk in and switch on the computer it runs from the CD/DVD and uses the RAM as a virtual hard drive, so i can start it if there is another OS on the disk without touching the hard drive or even if the was no hard drive fitted? i really need to know.

    24. cool thanks a lot, i purchased, downloaded, burned it with 3rd party freeware, and it worked beautifully. (typing from previously broken PC)

I did F8 and have tried every option, including C prompt, but it still winds up on the Windows log in screen asking for a password. I thought this disk would boot and get me to a C prompt. My computer ignores it. Nothing wrong with computer, just haven’t used it in 6 months and can’t recall password.

    31. All I want is a Windows Vista Disc so I can reformat my hard drive. My HP p6110f did not come with an OS disc. I have downloaded a recovery disc a while back, but it doesn’t serve my purpose. I want to wipe everything off, and start it anew. I am on my mac most of the time, but my wife uses the PC to pay bills. Now that there are all kinds of possible virus/worms/malware on that unit, I won’t let her use it for online stuff like paying bills or other important personal tasks. Any help would be appreciated. I hate Microsoft products now.

    32. I am only able to run in safe mode. System crashed otherwise…ugh… has Windows crashed… or Vista? I have, or rather, ‘had’, both. AND… is this recovery disk you have, the option I need to get back up to normal start up mode again? Thank you so much!

    36. Hi – I’ve bought the visa cd and burned the image but, despite my sony vaio laptop being set to boot from cd, it just hangs after the whire bar saying windows is loading files, so I cant get anywhere with it. I’ve been able to run ubuntu from a cd but can’t install it – is there any way to launch the vista recovery when Im using Ubunutu OS? End of tether and all that 🙁

    37. Can I also repair vista without having to reinstall all my programs again? My computer is getting slow and many times tells me that: “such and such program isn’t responding anymore” By starting my computer a screen also tells me that I am missing a couple of Runddl’s ??

    38. I get a message on my computer that says… “Windows did not start correctly. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. If you have a Windows Installation disc, insert the disc and restart your computer. Select the language setting, click “Next,” and then click “open system recovery tools.” (startup repair, a recovery tool available in some versions of Windows, can automatically fix start up) If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. Status: 0xc00000e9
Info: Windows has encountered a problem communicating with device connected to your computer. This error can be used by unplugging a removable storage device while the device is in use.”

Ok so my question is when I buy this recovery package for 9.95. will it restore my computer or do I have some type of virus or something.
