Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    1. “Dina, your comments almost always need to manually marked as “clean” for some reason! 🙁 ”

What do you mean? Am I doing something wrong?

    2. Dina: Not at all. Just WordPress seems to think that your comments are spam for some odd reason (that I cannot explain).

Joe, it’ll work with all x86 versions of Windows Vista.

    3. Thanks for the info. But after I used it, I tried to fully restore my computer from a backup I made on my 8GB USB flash drive, and it wouldn’t let me. It said I could only do a full backup recovery from DVD(s) or from an external hard drive. Any solutions for this other than copying the backup files from my flash drive to a set of CDs (I’m currently out of blank DVDs)? Thanks again.

    4. this is not a proper system recovery disk it only lets you do system restore or system backup and it wont let me install a fresh verion of vista so dont download this (it sucks)

    5. Worked like a dream.
That got rid of the S drive that Vista bitlocker created. Obviously Bootmgr files are transferred to the S drive for bitlocker and you have problems deleteing it.

    6. hello I plan to use Roxio easy-cd creator, and notice there are no instructions for it.
should the no emulation, or make a new project and data cd or data dvd for a cd-rw?
      Thanks

    7. I’m sorry, but we don’t cover, recommend, or provide for the usage of Roxio CD Creator. It may or may not work, I don’t know.

Grab yourself a copy of ImgBurn, it’s free and awesome.

    8. finally, download and ran the O/S with Magic, unfortunately, it still hangs on disk.sys in safe mode, and safe w/command in crcdisk.sys no better than the vista oem version, except it adds a domain controller feature? and the files automatically install versus using the real vista o/s. think it best to format hard-drive…

    9. can i just add for people having problems getting the disk to boot, when making the iso make sure the burn speed is low to medium, if its to fast you will lose part of files.

    10. now have two disk not worth a hill of beans one from magic and the other from imgburn!
      plan to uninstall both programs.

    11. how do i go about booting this disc then i have window vista on another computer its the basic not the home premium, its slow and terrible and i need to take it back to factory setting like i just bought it brand new, will this disc do that or not, plus if it does need booting then how do i go about doing that

    12. Ive had the following error message: NTLDR missing, press ctrl+alt+del to reboot… on my windows vista home premium OS. Can this problem be fixed with this boot disc? thanks in advance
      Stephan

    13. Suppose i’m having the same silly problems as everyone else with the missing file (install.wim)

would simply adding that file to the dvd i burn of the iso file provided here fix my problem? Or does the ISO file have to have the install.wim file for the disc to work..

and the burning question i’m sure eveyone is wondering… Why doesn’t this ISO file have the darn install.wim file that we all seem to need???

a link those of you who are having the same missing component (install.wim) problems may or maynot find helpful.

    14. I am on an Acer Extensa 56290-6830 running Vista Home Premium. I am probably going to switch over to Ubuntu in a few days, and I was wondering if this disk would allow me to restore my laptop back to factory settings if ubuntu doesn’t work out for me. If it can’t, then what should I do to create a disk that allows me to do so?

    15. I’m not sure if my post went through, so I apologize if it gets double posted. I’m onan Acer 5620-6830 running XP Home Premium and will probably change to ubuntu soon. Since I will be formatting over the restore partition, will this disk allow me to restore my laptop back to factory settings? If not, what can I do in order to do so?

    16. I formatted my hard drive because my son messed with the settings and it wouldn’t wotk anymore. I have a toshiba with windows vista been having problems with it, kept shutting off on its own and I tried restoring it to out of the box option on the recovery disc but now it doesn’t work. What should I do?

    17. guyz, i dun know why but i feel jelacy when grlz do something in computers. u know like DINA. Hindustan main sirf boyz taraqi karain.

    19. hi guyz,

hhaha Marium, u got nice opinion actually. Tht day when i posted tht comment, I had problem goin ojn in my PC, and my girl friend called me and said tht she could do it. lol

      THNX ALOT PPL.

    20. Sorry Muna, for some reason I mis-read your name the first time around and thought that you were a guy saying that…… oops!

      Rock on, girl!

    21. I burned the CD successfully using CDBurnerXP. I got to my boot screen and changed it to CD but my computer still boots up to teh welcome screen. BTW, I did a repair but I keep getting an error that my password is incorrect hence the need for a recovery disc.
      What am I doing wrong?

    22. I get a blinking cursor at the top left of the screen and the disk won’t boot(i’m set to boot from cd/dvd properly), I think there is definitely smthg wrong with the cd on certain pcs…

    23. Guys,
Please help! I did everything correctly so far in order to have a dual boot on my HP m9160f with Windows vista Home Premium 64 bit and XP (Vista installed first). I am trying to fix the bootloader with the file provided. I burned the files with CDBurner XP and whenI try to boot it from my DVD drive it won’t work. Please advise as to what I should do now. Thanks.

    24. Guys,
Forget it. I did it manually and now the bootloader screen comes up and I can boot both. Now the only problem is that if I want to use Vista I have to go into Setup and make sure my SATA is set to Raid. If I want my XP to start I have to change the mode to IDE. Is there anyway I can bypass that and have them start in the same mode? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    25. I have just installed Windows Vista Home, Waiting for the full oem disk to come from the repair shop next week. The desktop has booted up and had no problems till I installed new drivers for my wireless adapter. Right after the install the screen went white with alot of scambled stuff in it. I reboot by the restart switch on the tower. Then from here I got past the little windows green bar and to almost the log in screen. But it holts on a black screen with a movable white cursor. I also found out that I do have a window saver that comes up but nothing else work. I have installed the last known good config. and still now luck. I’m wondering if this restore disk will help sovle my problem? And if not were or what do I need to do. Thanks again for your time…

    26. Same as most everybody else here – no disk what-so-ever from the Toshiba crowd so finding this site was a God-Send, I hope.

I downloaded the Vista Recovery File, burned it and now I can at least get into the machine. However, the options at startup are not helping.

First window is to choose Language, Time & Currency Format and Keyboard – did that.

That window takes me to “Windows Vista – Install Now” with a couple of other options at the bottom of the window:
-What to know before installing Windows
      -Repair your computer

I figured repairing the issue is best.

I got a window: “Choose a recovery tool” with 5 sub options

      1. Startup Repair
      2. System Restore
      3. Windows Complete PC Restore
      4. Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
      5. Command Prompt

      I did 1. and 2. but she still won’t boot –

I tried re-booting after the Startup Repair and after teh System Restore but I continue to get the window: Startup Repair is checking your system for problems…..

It searches and provides this message: Startup Cannot Repair this Computer Automatically.

      The problem details are:

      Problem Event Name: StartupRepairV2
      Problem Signature 01: AutoFallover
      Problem Signature 02: 6.0.6000.16386.6.0.6000.16386

      Problem Signature 10: 0
      OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
      Locale ID: 1033

I’d like to do a full install, well I don’t WANT to but I figure that’s where this is all leading. But I have files on this machine (I think they’re still there) and I don’t want to lose them)

If the files are there, can I back up them up somehow before I re-install Vista?

      Thanks for any help

      Bill C

    27. Like most of the other folks on this site, I have some problems with the old Vistaroo.

      My Toshiba will not boot.

I continue to get this window: Startup Repair is checking your system for problems

Then I get this message: ?Startup Repair could not repair this computer automatically?

The ?review problem details? provided this problem signature:

      Problem Event Name: StartupRepairV2
      Problem Signature 01: AutoFallover
      Problem Signature 02: 6.0.6000.16386.6.0.6000.16386
      Problem Signature 03: 6
      Problem Signature 04: 655370
      Problem Signature 05: CorruptFile
      Problem Signature 06: CorruptFile
      Problem Signature 07: 3221226017
      Problem Signature 08: 2
      Problem Signature 09: SystemRestore
      Problem Signature 10: 0
      OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
      Locale ID: 1033

So, I found this site, downloaded the Vista data, burned the disk and now I can get into the machine at least.

The first screen is the ?Install Windows? screen to choose language, time/currency and keyboard ? did that

The next screen is Windows Vista ? Install Now with sub headings of:
-What to know before installing Windows
      -Repair your computer

I figure repairing it is the way to go in case I can salvage files. So I clicked on Repair your computer.

A window called ?System Recovery Options? popped up to find my Microsoft Windows Vista file.

Clicking on ?Next ? brought up another window

This window pops up: System Recovery Options ? Choose a recovery tool:

      The 5 options are:

      1. Startup Repair
      2. System Restore
      3. Windows Complete PC Restore
      4. Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
      5. Command Prompt

I did 1. and 2. and re-booted with not success.

I expect this is all head toward a re-installation of Vista thereby wiping the HD clean. Am I able to clean off files and programs from the machine to an external HD out of a DOS window or something? Or am I up the river in a boat with a hole in it?

      Thanks for any help people,

      Bill C.

    28. Thanks for the post. I successfully restored my courrpted Vista machine. Bookmarked. 🙂

      @ Bill C : If still not working I recommend a reinstall.

    29. I am incompetent. My notebook ran out of battery while I was using it, and as it was shutting down it began installing updates. But the thing is it has never been able to shut itself down, I have to do it manually, so I turned it off while it was supposedly downloading these updates. Now it won’t turn on, it can’t even make it past the Microsoft Corporation screen with the little green bar that goes across the screen. Safe Mode doesn’t work, nor does booting from last good configuration or a number of other things. My friend told me a recovery disk might work, but Windows can’t open the file. When I download it, do I open with an application or save to disk? I can’t seem to figure it out

    30. Absolutely amazin!!!simple to use..been breaking my head trying to fix the problem with my dual boot pc(xp and vista)..glad i came across this page.works like a charm.thank you!

    31. Okay, I Need STEP BY STEP instructions on doing this. I downloaded the ISO file, burned to CD, but, nothing when I reboot. Tried to open, nothing. Tried to boot from F12, nothing. Downloaded the torrent using Utorrent, now what?

    32. guru, i need your help i completly stuffed my new toshiba a400 notebook.
then me give you the run through, i wanted to dump vista and install xp i downloaded various programs and the one in question was ‘VistaBootPRO_3.3.0’
once i mucked around with it i restarted the lappy and got this error
      “Windows Boot Manager”
Windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. to fix the problem:
      1. insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
      2. choose your language settings, and then click “next”
      3. click “repair your computer”

if you do not have the disc, contact your system administratior or computer manafacturer for assistance.

      File:\Boot\BCD
      Status: 0xc0000098
Info: The windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid os entry

this is my problem i dont have the disk and i need a instant fix if possible without the long wait. can you please help me in lament terms on how to fix this please?

    33. Well that’s not surprising seeing as PROnetworks wrote VistaBootPRO from code stolen from our own EasyBCD – when people use code they didn’t write to perform system-related tasks it usually leads to catastrophes like yours.

If you’ll open a thread in the support forums at http://neosmart.net/forums/ I’m sure we’ll get your problem resolved.

For future reference: Use EasyBCD instead of VistaBootPRO, or you’ll be supporting software thieves and risking your PCs health.

    34. I’m gonna test this in Microsoft’s virtual pc and see if it works. Even though i don’t have vista as personally i think it’s rubbish, my friend will use this. Thankyou for poasting, Hopefully a great help to my friend.

    35. Hi. I have made a copy of the recovery disk from your site. It works, I found where to change how I boot the computer, but then what? My only system restore point is from the day that I installed the darn update, and that is not solving my problems. I am not sure what to do, can you help me please? Thank you!

    36. Hi,

I hope someone can help me out. My problem is slightly different from those stated above.

I have a Lenovo Desktop installed with Windows Vista Home Premium edition.

I was promoted to download & install the Vista SP1 2 days ago. The whole installation process went fine and was completed. I turned off the PC after using it for half a day. BUT, the next day when i on the PC, it just kept restarting itself. The error message was that windows did not shut down properly. I tried restarting in Safe Mode many times but failed.

I’d downloaded the Recover Disk provided in this Forum. Got to restore to last known good configuration. But still didn’t work.

Got the Recovery Dick to do Startup Repair a few times, but the same old RESTARTING problem occurs.

May i know does any one of you here knows how to resolve this? I have tons of important data and software on my computer. I need them for my work. Could anyone of you Help? I’ll be deeply grateful!

      Many thanks!

You have to put the cd in at very startup, even before the bootscreen on mine. As soon as you turn it on be quick at putting the disc in. Hope this Helps.
