Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    1. I downloaded the Windows Vista Recovery x64 bit and burned it to a DVD-R.
      The Recovery CD deffinitly works..
The only problem is that I am using an ACER 5570Z laptop
and it cant read a x64 bit disk.

So basically I burned it for no reason…

      My question is…
Is there a x32 bit ISO Image I can burn to a disk?

    2. I need help please. I did everything that was suggested in order to creat the recovery disk and I used it but it isn’t able to repair my computer and I can’t restore because it’s telling me that I don’t have any restore points. I set my computer to restore every night but they just dissappeared. next i tried to do a complete restore and it’s telling me that I am missing a file E:/sources/install.win
What should I do from here?

    3. Wait a second…
      My mistake..
I downloaded the x82 Vista recovery ISO Image
and burned that to a DVD R and worked! BUT FAIL!!

It popped up Windows Vista installer-
      I clicked Next-
I Put in my Product Key-
      I clicked Next-
IT SAYS Error tryed to find

E:DVD-R/Source/Windows_wmp not found or doesnt exist or something..

    4. My mistake again..

Mr. RALPH is asking the same question I am but better info.

What we are looking for is how the disc can find read this:

      E:/sources/install.win

    5. I’m sorry, Jack could you please let me know fi you find a solution to our problem.

    7. hai jack and ralph, your problem is same with me. do you know how to solve that problem now?

      thank you

    8. This recovery disk saved my bacon. I recently started my new Toshiba laptop and got a black screen with the words ‘Missing operating system’. Aaaaghh!!! Computer meltdown attack!

I had made a so-called recovery disk from the Toshiba recovery files that came on the hard drive (they didn;t bundle a CD with my laptop) but all it offered was the chance to wipe my hard drive and reinstall. Uh, no thanks, guys.

So I put in the Neosmart recovery disk and booted from it. First it allwed my to explore my data partition (E:\) and copy out some files to a USB stick. The C:| partition was unavailable though.

Then I tried the repair utility. No operating system was showing, but I clicked through and selected ‘Repair startup files’. A few seconds later I restarted and voila, everything back to normal. It looks like the OS startup files had somehow become corrupted.

The morals of the story? 1) Back up files very regularly – I was a week behind in my backups, so I really wanted to retrieve my data, not just format the drive. I recommend Cobian backup (freeware). 2) OEM recovery disks are basically useless. 3) If you get the same message I did (‘Missing operating system’), don’t panic. You have not lost all your data. 4) Thanks Neosmart for providing the MS repair kit in a convenient form!I will gladly carry water for you guys anytime!

    9. I am here, because WinVistaSP1 installation was unsuccessful I have attempting to repair my mother-in-laws’ Acer Aspire 3680 which has MS Windows Vista Home Basic pre installed.

Machine will not get past a BSOD with a STOP: 0x0000C1F5 error. Message also tells me to disconnect or uninstall offending hardware/software but OS can’t even boot in SafeMode. All boot efforts result in BSOD or reboot.

MS Hotfix exists for this issue KB Article Number(s): 946084 but package appears to need to be run from machine atleast in SafeMode. Catch 22.

The Acer Recovery CD is not with the machine. I have used the Hirens Boot CD and can see that there is a recovery partition but I hope it doesn’t come to that and that data is not lost. Downloading ISO as this is being written.

      PS
HP DV9218TX had exactly the same problem a few hours later (I should turn off Automatic Updates which fed me SP1!) but machine recovered and did a start up repair with recovery point. HP reports that SP1 was successfully installed!

    10. ISO burnt to CD ok, machine boots from CD and message is “Windows is loading files” with white progress bar. So far so good. Black screen with green windows worm/progress bar.

BSOD and Stop: 0x0000C1F5 error as before.

At wits end and don’t know what else to do.

      PS
Have also tried Linux Live Boot CD as some advice is to mount the HDD and delete a particular file. I don’t know enough about Linux. :o(

    11. i have both iso files on cd but cant load them, i manage to get passed login screen try and load cds and before my luck runs out a blue screen of death comes up and shuts my computer down please someone take this installation step by step. i am fairly good with computers. this is beyond me

    12. The two downloads you show are listed as:
Windows Vista x86 Recovery Disc Torrent
Windows Vista x64 Recovery Disc Torrent

Which one do I use with Vista Home Basic (32)?

    13. Okay, i only see a like for a recovery disk for 64 bit or 86. I have 32 bit.

also someone wrote they have italian version. does that mean this will work on versions other than english?

my problem is this. i bought a computer in japan, with a japanese os. unfortunately when i first turned on the computer, i chose canada and english as my settings. apparently this screws a lot up …which begs the question, why is there that option in the first place.
even changing things back to japanese wont repair any of the damage. for a stupid reason it means some things arent installed properly and wont install properly, even when i change back to japanese. they act like they are really on an english computer. question marks and various symbols. the computers os is still basically japanese, so to me it makes no sense that newly installing a programme wont work. changing the settings to english seem to only have the benefit of telling me the day of the week in english. if its in japanese, its not fun, but i can maybe eventually understand, but a line of question marks are hard to understand…

so what i am trying or hoping to do, is recover it to be “originally japanese”. then i think it would still let me change to english to install english programmes, but right now, the programmes that only allow japanese sometimes are impossible to have proper characters.

this is completely confusing, and i dont know how to explain it well that someone who hasnt used a japanese os would easily understand, but japanese systems tend to be quite touchy about language settings. a japanese cd that worked 100% on my english system of windows 2000 (with the regional settings as japanese), wont now work on my japanese computer…even tho it should be compatible.

anyway if any one has an idea or knows if i can use this recovery disk with my system (or if not, where i can get it), please let me know. any other details necessary, let me know.

      thanks!

    14. David, use the x86 which is designed for 32bit machines … the x64 is for 64 bit machines.

    15. David, that’s the first thing I noticed.

Any answers? I have 32 bit Windows Vista Home Premium on an ew HP Paviliion laptop.

      I could KILL Bill Gates.

Please help! I have spent my entire life since May purchase working out the kinks on this pre-installed piece of crap!

      Miggy

    16. Still having problems. Successfully downloaded and burned disc using imgbrn. However, when I had to read thru the instructions and a bazillion posts (above) to figure out how to do this. The isntructions say use F8 or change the Bios, with no instructions on how to change the bios and F8 should have read F12. Now I greatly respect the knowledge of IT people – but like so many professionals you know the steps in your minds and you leave out important steps for the rest of us. If I’m writing instructions, I put up one screen and write down each and every step as I go thru it, then go back and try to do the process just from my instructions.

Anyway, I got it to boot from the cd, but it is still failing. I’ve got a Dell Dimension C521, using AMD motherboard, Windows home basic 32bit. It keeps saying windows fails to start. I took my computer to a shop last week and they checked it and said the hard drive is good, the memory is good, no viruses – BUT they can’t fix it because they don’t own a Vista license – thanks for telling me after I brought it in. Gives a shop a bad name – If you are in Texas don’t go to ALTEX COMPUTERS or they’ll screw you.

When I try to do the repair steps I get the screen that gives me the choice of re-installing or repairing. I tried the repair step twice, then the install, but when I realized it wanted to wipe my harddrive and would have lost all my files, I quit and went back to trying the repair. It just won’t work on my computer. HELP!

    17. Why can’t Microsoft just give us the stupid dvds since we paid for the full version and not the headaches for recovering this stuff! This is sooooo wrong and I think unethical (if that is the right word–but you get what I am trying to say).

    18. hi its raja,

    20. Dawn, it’s not Microsoft that you should be complaining about – it’s the OEM (the guys that make your PC) who are responsible for whether or not your PC ships with a standard Vista installation disk. Microsoft says they can give it to you, their CEO is the one that decides whether or not they will proved you it.

    21. Hi, I have downloaded the ISO file , but can not get to the recovery portion of the HD, How do I get it to run. The C: drive is blank, but the “boot X ” drive is there. The computer boots up on the ISO disc, but the recovery disc will not load and just gives me an error message. So njeed to know how to get the recovery partition to load

    25. My vista has decided not to recognise my administartor password tried all the obvious things like cps locks.
Would this recovery disk solve this problem cheers.

    26. hi. can you please provide a non-torrent link as my isp does not permit me to download from torrents…thanks

    27. I wasn’t sure if this would work for me because I dual-boot with GRUB. My recovery partition was scrogged and the recovery disk that came with my computer wanted to wipe everything. This fixed the problem and didn’t mess up GRUB. I thought it might “repair” the problem and switch to the vista bootloader, but it didn’t. It just fixed the problem and I was off and running. Awesome, thanks so much for hosting this!

    28. Hey I just baught a new Fujitsu laptop , and after installing a video game called dawn of war , my brother tells me I need to make recovery disc but this is like a foreighn language to me 🙁 , please help !

    29. Hello Computerguru and everyone here,
I have a problem with my vista on my laptop. I live in the Netherlands for not long.
I bought a laptop from the US less then a year ago. After 3 months had strange problems that I could not use it.
Because of warranty I contacted the HP here in the Netherlands and then it was shipped to the repair center in Germany. After some months I finally have got back my laptop but the all Windows Vista is dutch (menu text, mappa, start menu text). I am in big trouble because I do not understand dutch. I would like to change it to English.
Is the the recovery disk downloaded from NeoSmart helping me to be able to replace the language totally on Vista? or does anyone have a good idea or link which could help me?
      Thank you
      Geo

    30. Hi
I moved an ntfs partition with gparted live cd and when I rebooted into vista, I was faced with a blank screen. So after some googling I arrived here and downloaded the x86 recovery iso, which I successfully burnt, md5 was correct and it booted. I got a message saying that windows is loading the files and a white bar that crept across the screen. Then came the green ms bar that whizzed back and forth a few times. Then the green vista wallpaper and a mouse pointer, which I could move. But nothing else. The keyboard didn’t seem to do anything. And there was nothing to see or do. It just sat there, the wallpaper, for an hour, and I wasn’t offered any options.

I have a fujitsu siemens amilo li 1818 160gb sata drive and dual boot into pclos. Grub works, its just that if I choose windows at the grub level, I get as far as the green bar whizzing back and forth and then a blank screen.
Why doesn’t the recovery disk recover anything?

      Please offer me some advice!

      ros

    31. Thanks Mahmoud Al-Qudsi for yr tip, d/l worked 100%. Being a newbie, this file must still be burned via an ISO option to a CD? I do have ImgBurn v2.4.2.0

    32. Thanks again Mahmoud Al-Qudsi, all went very smoothly and laptop back to normal. Magic!

    33. Someone please help me…

      I’m really fed up.

I bought this computer with vista home premium 32bit installed and then downgraded to XP. Now I’d like to switch back to vista but the recovery function doesn’t work.

My problem is…I’ve downloaded and burned the ISO image and it even autoplays when I login to windows XP, but when I boot from CD at startup it just gives me a black screen with the DOS cursor three lines down from the top, just blinking.

It doesn’t do anything else. I’d really like to be able to get my old OS back and I haven’t had access to my computer for 2 weeks because of this problem.

      Any helps is greatly appreciated.

    34. so basically for vista x86 vaio
burn the image using imgburn for sure results
when all the vaio logo loads up
keep pressing f12 continously (sort of crude but worked)
it will ask you to press any button to load from cd/dvd..
then follow the on screen instructions i prefer using system restore till a day bfr the system started givin problems.

      hope it helps

      thnx neo smart

I did everything as was told and tried to reboot my compaq pavillion a940. It starts hopeful. It displays the message ‘Windows is loading files’ and after its finished i get into the screen with the ‘Microsoft Corporation’ screen (with the moving bar). But then i get stuck and I hear a small repeating beep. I tried it a few times, but each time I get stuck in the same place. I dont get any error messages by the way. What should I do?
