Disk for recovery & repair
If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.
Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.
Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.
It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.
The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.
The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

Most dell laptops ship with a complete OEM dvd, they call it recovery disc but it has the entire vista installation.
(checked it on the desktop).
Does anyone know what is the use of media-direct partition esp since it has already crippled by OS around 4 times by giving the famous BSOD?

Ok, stupid person asking questions here, I see two windows for this download(Windows Vista x86 Recovery Disc Torrent & Windows Vista x64 Recovery Disc Torrent) I just purchased this computer with Vista on it and I feel the way i did when Windows NT came out(what a shitty OS). I love XP for its super , ultra , easy , for stupid people …UI!
This computer has too many things that are way too differant, ill get used to it since I’ve been playing with it for 3 days. Now for my question do I download 86 torrent or 64 torrent!!!
I have a Compaq Presario SR5518F
I.P. Dual core E2180
2048MB
250GB HD
OK, maybe its just me but ive downloaded this twice now burned it properly, etc. But every time I boot it on start up i get so far and then it says install.wim missing is there any way of fixing this?
hello
i was wondering, my g/f was not very nice to her laptop and lets just say i had to replace the hard drive, so after i did that i have a xp image disc of xp sp3 and i put it on her computer because we both don’t really like vista and now she’s missing all the drivers for most of her components, so i don’t think the disc you guy’s are talking about would work for my problem but if you could help me find a driver and utilities disc it would be greatly appreciated. My laptops specs are,
IBM lenovo 3000 n100, intel t2060 cpu, ive tried going through my computer and looking for the updates for the drivers but it says there isn’t any and some stuff says the hardware is not installed
Thanks to anyone who can help me.
hi computer guru,
im not a wizz with computers, but other laptop loads and goes onto do all the system checks which s fine but goes to windows error recovery and any one of the safe mode i click on start to process but blue screen comes up saying a problem has been detected, could i ise this software that you have to fix this problem and get vista startd againa nad also how do i download the software im not sure how to use this iso thing
Dear Sirs,
I didn’t have a clue about torrent and the file downloaded as torrent with no directions about how to access the 120 mb file. I finally found it at :http://www.divshare.com/download/3557861-fcb. Thank god.. Please add the site to the download for Vista Recover CD if you can.
I have a sony vaio laptop (model VGN-NR220E). Yesterday, it froze and wouldn’t respond to control-alt-del, so I turned it off using the power button. When it came back on, I got an error message to effect that Windows failed to start because CI.dll is missing or corrupt and that I should insert my windows installation disc and restart the computer.
I didn’t have an installation disc and the computer didn’t come with restoration discs. I downloaded the 32-bit Windows Vista Recovery Disc here, and tried that. Unfortunately, it only got as far as “Windows is loading files…” followed by a black screen and cursor.
I managed to get a command prompt by inserting a system recovery disk from another computer. When I reinserted the Vista Recovery Disc and started going through the different folders, the system kept tried to read from drive A (of which there isn’t one). Sadly, I went and purchased a full version of Vista, thinking this was the safe, if expensive — not to mention slightly infuriating — option. Unfortunately, I just ended up with a black screen and cursor.
Any insight into why this is happening and what I can do about it? Thanks!
Thank you Mahmoud Al-Qudsi for your valuable comments…
I am gonna try it tonight ensha’ALLAH…
I dowloaded the file and succesfully created the recovery disk. I start the computer, it asks me if I wish to boot from CD, to which I say yes. It then proceeds to load the files, I then get the Windows bar and then nothing but a blank screen after.
I have an HP dv9000 Laptop.
Any thoughts by anyone. Would be greatly appreciated!!
Hello, I downloaded this iso and booted but it gives me the option of installing Vista, Can somone explain what that does exactly
Well here is the deal, I have a Gateway M-series Laptop I did a complete system recovery which formatted my hardrive and “Reinstalled” Vista, Once it restarted after installation it went straight to the log on screen and it said “other user” I logged in as administrator but the OS seemes to be corrupt, the taskbar is like the Windows 98 one and it basically looks like if you were in safe mode. I wanted to do a full system recovery once again but the Option I used to get when restarting isnt there anymore It used to say “hit F12 for recovery” it isnt there anymore. What should I do?
Hello My laptop is a Dv9000 that came with windows vista 32 home premium. Right now it just came back to best buy from HP. what HP did is they replaced the Hard drive. it has nothing on it, no operating system such as the last hard drive that had Vista on it. now best buy is asking me to get the Operating systems disc so they can intall it on my computer. I called Hp and they told me that I have to buy the disc witch I should not have to pay anything since its under warranty…Questions
1) with a new hard drive with nothing on it do I need the system recovery or the whole program.
Joe Thanks
For those who are getting an annoying repeditive beeping when trying to load the vista recovery disk (x86 tested only, but probably the same for x64).
Burn the iso image to DVD media. The ISO image is in UDF format & thus will work.
Dont know why or who labelled it as a CD/DVD or even the generic term ‘disk’. Anything other then a DVD disc will work.
Hope this helps someone save some time (oh, and a CDR)
Would also be better if this image contained bootsect.exe
Another tip, if vista is failing to boot, and displaying 0 windows installations, you must use diskpart from recovery cmd prompt to select the disk, select the partition, then set it ‘active’
Just a friendly reminder to all those requesting help with the use of the recovery CD here in the comments – support requests on the blog are ignored due to the large quantity of posts and the difficulty of keeping track of them.
Please open a support thread at our forums at http://neosmart.net/forums/ instead, and you’ll get your problems hopefully solved.
Hi Computer Guru!
I have bought Compaque notebook with windows vista Basic. after some time i was facing some problem with vista so i installed XP. now i again want to install vista. but i don’t have the CD. but i am having the product key. can i reinstall it with this recovery disc.
Hey, if I downloaded this, can I use it on Vista home Premium x32???
Greetings,
There is one thing on my mind that really bothers me… It’s probably a well-known case around here. I tried to unallocate some free space from my C:\ because it’s the only one usable (not speaking of the backup partition), and I pretty much dislike the idea of having ‘it all’ in one place. But as i did that my notebook (HP 530 running on Vista Home Premium x32) it shut down, and right now I can’t really boot.
As most of the users, i don’t have the CD, only that partition. And with this little bootable treasure here i am able to load it and do it fresh and clean?
Sorry for the simplicity of my question, but I haven’t really been working with Vista so far, as well as with notebooks…
Thanks in advance and sorry for wasting your time…
Okay, I have an ALIENWARE laptopwith Vista Ultimate, and its x32.
I downloaded the x64 and it didn’t work.
Then I downloaded the x82 and it booted up from the cd fine, but when it said “select a harddrive blah blah blah” none of my harddrives showed up.
need help please 🙂
do you need to put bith files on the same cd?
also when i use it on my laptop it doesnt do anything.
Just build your PC and spare yourself the headache. Not to mention, you save a bundle of cash doing so.
Sup
can any of u plz tell me if this removes all u’r data or installs a fresh new vista on u’r computer
=]
Can you boot it up from XP?
Folks,
http://neosmart.net/forums/
Go there and ask your questions for better (more one on one) help. Also, read the messages, here and in the forums. Many times the questions I am seeing have been answered.
Anyway, the info below may be of some help to HP/Compaq owners (though I can’t guarantee it’s the same on your system).
I have a Presario F700 series laptop (Vista Home Premium) which has the recovery partition, and from which I burnt a set of recovery disks (most if not all of these systems allow you to burn at least one set of recovery disks off the partition. I have noticed some people apparently haven’t done that. All the have is the recovery partition on the HDD, and then when they cannot get to their hard drive to access the partition, they are screwed).
So, anyway, I popped in disk one to see what all it does, or doesn’t do. I was afraid all it would do is wipe my hard disk and start from scratch.
However, once you get the main screen, there is a button for “advanced.”
Under advanced options, you can access MS system restore (i.e. you can set it to a previous restore point), a file backup program (very handy), system recovery (which may or may not be the same recovery that comes with the Vista System disk), and the factory reset, which of course wipes everything and restores the system to the way it was when you got it.
All this was good to know.
However, I have also ordered the recovery disks from HP, and I have downloaded and am about to burn this one, too. Before I install another OS, I want as many options for recovery as I can get, and backups.
HP only allows you to burn one set of recovery disks, and we all know that CD/DVD +/- R/RWs are prone to damage or corruption.
Thanks for that comment, James!
i’ve just downloaded the x32 recovery disc, but i could not burn it using imgBurn. i followed the instruction posted above, but imgBurn will say “invalid image” And does the file contains only two folders and 1 image as boot manager?
So if I download this recovery thing and burn it to a disk, Can I use it to get rid of a Linux and restore my computer back to windows??
imgBurn keeps on telling me that the file (x32 recovery disc) is an invalid image. HELP!
I think i burned the cd correct but now that it is burned how do i use it.
By accident I deleted my recovery drive will this still work cause right now my vista pc is a very ugly paperweight.
Will Vista boot from this download.
If so, will it work with boot camp for mac on a mac?
when i try to open the program it informs me that can’t be used because its has unknown info and I need to search the Internet for it but my computer internet is messed up (I burnt it to a disc of course) but it will not restore my computer what do I do…?
I have Vista Business 32bit.
Does this x64/86 apply
When I tried to boot from the disk it asks me “push any key to load from CD” so I do then it says “Loading Windows Files” then it kicks to the black screen with the green line bar. and hangs up there. It doesn’t go any further? what do I do with that?
I have 2 comps Vista home 1lappy 1 desktop. both hit the black screen of death (boot screen) and even tho the line keeps moving it doesn’t load up. I had my desktop doing that literally for days.
I have no disks other then the torrent that I got here and used a different comp to burn it seems to be burnt fine but won’t do what itis supposed to do…?
Please anyone
I work with computers all the time this has me stuck.
Thanks for your time
Bez
@Norm — Choose the x86 version. The x64 version is for a PC with a 64-bit processor AND running the 64-bit version of Windows (you can run the 32-bit version of Win on a 64-bit processor, in which case you’d want the x86 version..).
@neosmart / whoever put this utility together — THANK YOU! This software is brilliant. You rock.
I have successfully made the cd, and have started the process on my laptop. But as soon as the System Recovery Options menu comes up, where I am asked to select an operating system to repair and click next…”
The Microsoft Windows Vista shows up
I select it and click next
Then an error pops up claiming that
“This version of system recover options is not camplatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair…”
This doesnt make sense to me, because I know that my computer uses Microsoft Vista.
What am I doing wrong?
Thank you for the advice, but if I use the recovery disk will I lose everything on the computer.
I got vista with my laptop and i installed xp and i lost vista i would like to know what i have to do ………can i use this recovery cd
BestBuy is crazy!
Dell provide the recovery disc and the partition on the hard drive.
BestBuy (GEEKSQUAD) damage the partition so that the user cant use it and take away the recovery disc that dell provide!
All this to brutally force the user to pay to a nerd at GEEK SQUAD install windows!
They sell the serial key though.
It cames on the computer!
But the recovery disk is taken away!
I’ve contacted microsoft and they say it illegal to sell a computer with windows and the serial key but without the CD or a way to the user install the software again!
Fortunately I contacted DELL and maybe they will mail the CD for me.
Otherwise I dot think it’s Illegal to download the Vista and use the real cd key.
Thanks for this. Appreciate it. Without it, I would have had to do a complete reinstall of Vista.
I NEED HELP!!! i want to make my computer like it was when i first bought it. I can’t figure out how to do that, so if anyone knos how please can you help me. i have a 2007 dell with windows vista.
Hi all ^_^
thanks for this great Recovery disk
I can boot from it but I’m scared of doing the recovery >__<
why ?
coz I deleted my recovery partition after I burned the recovery DVD’s
But somehow the recovery DVD’s are not working O.o
I talked to HP support in my area but they are playing with me and it wont be easy to get another recovery set from them
So I have some questions I will be glad if it was answered 🙂
1.Will I lose all my data on the HDD ?
2.Do I have to reinstall all the drivers ?
3.will the vista be recovered to the same Partitions status as when I first bought this notebook ?
4.Can I make another recovery partition with this or it will be created after the recovery ?
Please I will be glad if you helped me ^___^

i tried to do everything i could system restore, complete pc restore, but the computer shut down in the middle of a complete restore and i never made a copy of the default settings. i have an acer aspire m1610. no recovery cds come with acer for some reason but i tried to find the setup files and my c drive is completely empty. What can i do? someone help
thanx i have vista basic and mine didn’t come with a recovery disc
I made a partition with Ubuntu and for some reason in the partition manager it looked at my 320GB external drive as the Ubuntu boot disk. I deleted the partition and now I have a damaged boot due to GRUB… So I hope this disk repaires that. I like Ubuntu, but sometimes… I think the way GRUB takes over your system basically is very stupid program engineering.
Hey guys my computer has been getting a blue screen with a bunch of writing everytime i turn it on and it cant run on safe mode. I download the 32bit one and I cant run it, everytime I click to run it say install.wim, is missing how do i fix this?
email me or reply back on this
Hello,
I am currently stumped. I am familiar with building computers and troubleshooting problems as I have been doing this for a few years. My problem started when I got lazy. At the start of the year I bought an Emachines because I just needed basic computer needs. Well now I wish to game and bought all the appropriate needs except a new OS. I figured I would be able to just use the existing OS. To my suprise the computer didnt come with a boot disk or even a recovery disk. The hdd is partitioned with a recovery partition. My problem is when I change out the mobo and processor I get blue screened with “significant hardware changes or virus.” I assume this is because the copy of vista is Proprietary to the emachines mobo. I was wondering what options I might have in saving my copy of vista. I am currently asking friends for vista dvds so I can try a repair from the disk using my cd key on the side of the box. I am also wondering if the tool described here would answer some of my problems. Or if I just need to cough up 90 bucks and go get xp from fry’s.
Any help is appreciated, thanks!!!
great fantastic with nero it didnt work but with imgburn it did TANX ALOT
