Disk for recovery & repair
If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.
Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.
Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.
It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.
The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.
The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

I have a HP Compaq Presario laptop running vista that i bought just over a year ago. When I turn the power on it just restarts itself. Only when i press any or a combination of F8-F12 does it stay switched on but displays no image on the screen.
I’ve used the recovery disc as advised on this site but I can’t even get into the BIOS to change the boot configuration to CR_ROM. It spins the disc but then stops.
Any ideas?
I’ve booted from the recovery disk (downloaded the iso, nero’d it to a CD, booted from CD), bu tI don’t see any gui….just a DR DOS prompt, I even tried to fdisk /mbr, but it won’t take.
why can’t I see the gui?
any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, all!
(1)By using this iso you won’t loose your data. The iso is going to repair the os, not reinstalling it.
If you have a data partition, don’t worry.
(2)My advice for future ocurrencies
Start\left-click on the Documents icon\Proprieties\4th tab\Move\Select a free partition (normally a D: drive, or a non-windows-system-drive with another drive letter)\Create a Folder (Documents)\Press “Select Folder”, and go get a cup of coffe while you wait.
This process will move EVERYTHING on the documents folder to a non-os drive, normally a D: drive. So, if you need to format, repair or install another os, you don’t need to worry about loosing your personal docs.
Dito isto, vamos ao que interessa!

To prime your dvd/cd drive for start up in the BIOS menu.
There are 2 ways:
\\1
After pressing the ‘on’ button, press the corresponding key to enter the BIOS setup, or SETUP (it could be the BELETE key, but it can be other – watch the bottom of the screen for instructions).
In the BIOS setup, hit the arrows to go back and forth in the diferent tab menus. Go to the boot menu. Go down (arrows) to select the dvd/cd drive, and use the F5 or F6 to order the boot sequence. || The dvd/cd drive MUST BE THE TOP ONE. ||
Press Esc and select “exit and save settings”. Your computer will start up using the dvd/cd drive, before the hard drive. (don’t worry about undoing the settings you made in the bios. you will be able to start up normaly after the this repair issue, even other disks inserted)
\\2
There is another way… after powering on the computer, press – watch the bottom of the screen for instructions – the BOOT setup key (in the computer i used the cd it was the F2). Using the arrows, select the device you want to boot from. Select your dvd/cd drive by hitting Enter.
After the cd boot, you will see a language selection menu. Select English, and select your keyboard default (but i think thats only for command prompt – i didn’t use it).
Another menu will appear, saying install. Instead of install, go to the lower-left options and select “Startup Repair”.
It worked for me. I had to reboot and repair 2 times. After the second time, windows rebooted normaly.
Good luck!
(This is not a very techy thing, but to those of you that are experiencing a loooong black screen after the loading bar, press non essencial keys when it seems that nothing is happening – i used the arrows and worked[!]. Stay alert for the activity led.
Good Luck!)
I used the first recovery disc to wipe and erase the data from my hard drive, then inserted the second cd, but still nothing is happening. My laptop is a sony vaio.
Please help.
Whats the Key
i have downloaded the ISO (twice), created the disc using imgburn and recieved the same error message with both copies. The message is:
‘Install.wim’ is missing from the source file
error cose:0x8007002
can anyone help? thanks in advance
Once Again, This is not an installer. This is a recovery disc. Installer disc is 3GB in size. This is only 120mb
Hoping someone can help. Received the following message on my Toshiba Satellite P205-S6287 upon startup:
“A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart”
Using this recovery disc I was able to get to the Repair Tools and it scanned my hard drive, rebooted but came back to this same message.
In trying to boot from this disc again to try repairs once more, it starts “Windows is loading files” and a bar fills the bottom of the screen. When this gets all the way to the right, the Microsoft Corporation with green “scanning” bar appears (the one that usually appears at start up). While this is yone happening you can hear the disc drive working. Then all of a sudden all goes quiet and NOTHING. The mouse arrow appears on the black screen and that’s it. Nothing else happens. I don’t get to the repair/recovery screen I got to the first time I tried this disc. Everything is silent and the only noise the laptop makes is slight clicking/crackling from the hard drive.
Any thoughts or ideas of what can be done? I would prefer not to reformat my hard drive as there are some files I want to recover.
Thanks.
I downloaded the 64 bit version. It was 145 mb. I wrote it to a cd. but the system will not boot from it. I get the error message ” NTLDR missing” I finally got to look at the disk I burned and sure enough no NTLDR ant where. So after downloading it again several times with the same results I’m asking for help after searching for an answer here and other forums. Thanks
I downloaded the 64-bit version. When I try to run it goes through the “windows is loading files” stage and then eventually gets to a blue screen with a white arrow, but nothing else comes up. I’m not sure what went wrong.
Your links for vista recovery doesn’t work.

I downloaded the disc and burnt it, trying to fix my “corrupt” registry but the disc will not boot.

Hey ComputerGuru!
I manages starting up the ISO but the installation stuck saying “Windows cannot open the required file E:\Sources\Install.wim. The file does not exist. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070002” Any ideas!..? :((

Hey guys, I’m having a problem with using this to help repair the start-up file that was apparently broken… I burned it, put it in, setup to start from the disc and it says that windows is loading the files, but then stays on a blackscreen with the pointer forever… Is it supposed to do this? How long do I have to wait?”
Can anyone comment on this? I’m having the same problem. This also occurs when I try to boot from my Lenovo recovery disc. (i have a Lenovo 3000 k100 desktop running ( trying to run) vista home premium)
Any input would be greatly appreciated! (my computer’s been out of commission for a week now and I’ve tried just about everything. . .)
i love you
Microsoft has like a thou o´years making money from us, they actually don´t give a F.. for us, they´s just concerned ´bout their profits. Only thing that we need is have competition (now we can enjoy another kind of softwares like Mac) that is not so very unexpensive, though, we could make a whole final balance of what will be better for us, spending a bunch of bucks at the beginig (buyin a Mac)and save lot money and time through the way or make a poor investement first and start spending money for the rest of my PC life.
Computer Guru,
I have downloaded the file using UTorrent and also installed Imgburn. I belive that the file downloaded is a RAR. file. Do i need to burn the RAR. file with Imgburn or extract the contents.
Thanks for the support.
Stevie.
Thanks guys! I’ve downloaded VR disk to attempt to repair corrupted winsock2 on my Vaio vgn-fz21m. Will it do the trick? I’ve used reccomedations found on MS support sites as well as the ones found on other fora but to no avail! If one of you has a brighter idea, I’m all ears. Thanks for your feedback!
I had problems doing this with ImgBurn – worked with CDBurnerXP. Then I found it was the same as the Recoery DVD-ROM for Windows Vista my manufacturer gave me. I thought this would get me into the file system to allow me to save some files but I just ended up reinstalling vista with this. It did give me the optio to install vista to an external HD which might have allowed me to get to the C:/ drive files. Fortunately I had a partition and could get to my non-system files. It did save off my old program files and all in the c:/ drive under Windows.old – good luck
I need help. I deleted my Recovery partition (on accident). I cant download the partition on this site. Well matter fact any site. My CD drive doesnt work. Nortons wont work anymore. Im screwed unless the computer gurus on this site can help me!!!!
