Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    1. I tried using this and it said that E:/windowns.install could not be found or something. Can anyone help me?

    2. Hi everybody, I have Windows Vista Business Edition 32 bit and I want to do a system recovery, but when i don’t have CD with my notebook Sony Vaio, can i use Windows Vista 32-Bit (x86) Recovery Disc?

      Thanks a lot.

    3. hello, this is important, Alot of stuff has happened and I need a recovery disk. do I need to have my code on the side of the computer to download it or something? I’m a total beginner when it comes to this. please help me out. when it comes to rebooting it, do I need to put in any code? or does it do it by itself?

is it a step by step process? I’d like my instructions to be like that please.

    4. This disk worked well for me but unfortunately didn’t suceed in repairing my system, which, among other things, lost or deleted all the former Restore Points. Maddening.

Just for laughs, I thought I might see what was on the Dell Reinstallation DVD. It seems to be the same thing – I got the same options and the same lack of performance. But if you didn’t have my OS’s problems, the Reinstallation disk could work too, assuming anything could work.

I was always able to repair XP and never had to reinstall, which it looks like I will need to do here. Called Microsoft to find out if I could load Windows 7over a damaged Vista installation and their general consensus was no. Although 7 isn’t out yet, I had one of the pre-release beta versions.

Thought I would try it anyway. It won’t run in Safe Mode. Just not my day.

Hope all the rest of you have better luck.

    5. I’m running a toshiba satellite, with vista home.
I’ve lost my entire vista partition.
I tried using the recovery partition that toshiba puts on thier laptops but thats not working, So I tried the file you mentioned here…
The DVD I burned works fine,
When after putting in my Product Key, and clicking install I get an error:
“Windows Cannot Open the Required File
      D:\Sources\Install.wim.
The File does not exit, Make sure all files required for installation are available and restart the installation: Error code 0X80070002”

The File isn’t even on the disk, nor in the ISO.
I’m assuming its suppose to be in the recovery partition??
How would I access the recovery partition?
or create a recovery CD/DVD from a recovery partition?

    6. How can I tell whether my windows vista is a 32bit or 64bit operating system if I cannot access windows to check?

    7. wow, lots of comments. hey i wanted to thank you for the tool. without it, i wouldnt have figured out why windows sp2 wouldnt install on my dual boot system. i figured it out by running your tool and it wouldnt find my windows partition. i have documented my trials on my site.

      http://yougetalife.com/vistasp2andgrub.aspx

i linked to this age so others can use this tool. i will find it useful since my system didnt come with install media. others will find it useful too. and it helped my investigation into why sp2 wouldnt install on a dual boot system.

    8. Hi everyone

I downloaded the 64-bit version and tried it out on my system. The initial attempt seemed to work fine and it did a repair. But the laptop is is now in a boot loop and when I try using the CD again to repair again i get the message that
‘This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of windows.’
If it is the wrong disc, why did it acept it the first time?
If I cant get into windows, how can I check which disc is right for my os?
In my desperation, I tried the 32-bit version as well.
      Thanks for any help.

    9. I was able to boot from the recovery CD. I did a restore to the most recent date, which unfortunately was July 2008 (I never use this computer). My laptop wanted me to choose a more recent date, but I had no choice. The message said everything was successful and my computer restarted. So awesome, right? Well, apparently not. The windows login screen came on and I typed my password. After a few second, my screen went black and all I can see is my mouse arrow. And that’s where I’m at. I can’t see my wallpaper, the icons, nor the tray at the bottom. If I con-alt-del, the windows page with options (one being task manager) pops up.

      Any help?

    10. I own a toshiba laptop. i used the recovery disc and it said there was a error. i then went to turn on the computer and BOOTMGR IS MISSING comes up. when i tried to re-recover there was no operating system to recover. please help me

    11. i know that we can use recovery to restore system stability but what i want to know is if i use recovery partition will i lost my datas

desktop comes null just my documents opened i had to open explorer.exe from task manager and yet i cant reach old performance
what should i do and if i use recovery partition will i be able to use it again.

    12. Aaron,
      Try powering off the laptop,
hold the 0 (zero) key down, while powering the laptop back on..
Should boot into a hidden partition to restore windows.

Unless that partition vanished like mine did

    13. just wondering if i should d/l the 64bit iso and use it on my dv5 1017nr hp pavilion laptop. what i did was got the laptop and alot of the features such as the remote control do not work for Linux, ubuntu 9.04. so i called HP and they said that i should order this recovery disk that will set the Windows Vista home premium back on my pc for 25$, i bought the notebook and i’m not giving them anymore money. will this solution work for my case?

    14. Thanks Guru , it worked for me. I used imgburn to burn the CD and and rest were handeled by startup-CD *the recovery disk*!

thanks again. Now i am using my vista as it was before.

    15. Will the C:\ drive data lost in case if i use this tool for recovering the windows vista.

      thanks

    16. Thanks for the torrent links, I have justed used the 32bit recovery disc to repair a Vista installation. Life saver!

    17. Hello, first off I’d like to thank you for the recovery disk, which I’m sure it has been pretty useful for everyone, even me. But I’ve got a question that may sound like I’m a little wet behind the ears. The fact is I’ve tried to boot it on my laptop (HP Dv6-1120ep) since I can’t get past the loading screen on Vista (that green horizontal bar) with no success. I’ve set the boot order on BIOS to CD/DVD drive first, restarted the laptop. But as soon as the “Press any key to boot from the CD/DVD” option popped, I clicked on a key but regardless of the option nothing happened, it just said “Windows is loading the files” like it has been doing these last hours and it’s back on the green horizontal bar again.
Another thing, has it got anything to do with the language version of the software? Since this version is Portuguese (PT). But I’m guessing it hasn’t got much to do about it…
Any solutions for this? Thanks in advance!

    18. @João P. It should boot to the disc, regardless. Computers work the same. My best guess is you have a scratch or a smudge on your disc, or your optical drive has a bad head. You can test your optical drive easily by buying a usb optical drive. Use it to boot to a cd as you normally would.

      -Eric

    19. Hey,

Can someone please help me? Sorry if this is obvious, I’m just not completely sure.

I bought a Toshiba laptop with Vista already installed on it. Due to me being an idiot, my computer probably has a virus or something. Either way, I want to reinstall/do a clean install of Vista again to wipe the hardrive and start again with the Vista and have a clean slate. The only disc that came with the laptop for Vista was something like: “Product Recovery CD” 😐 however. I’ve looked up lots of links online but I can only find links for when you want to replace Vista with XP for example, or when you have Vista Installation on a CD but I don’t have that of course.

I really would appreciate any help, so thanks a bunch.

      Fran

    20. @Fran The recovery disc will restore your computer to the way you bought it, be that Vista, or whatever was installed on it when you first turned it on. If you want XP you have to buy Windows XP and use that disc to install XP onto your machine.

Make sure you have all the necessary XP drivers for your computer. Vista drivers are not compatible with XP drivers. Therefore, you need XP drivers for your Windows XP to understand how to use your components. You can find your drivers on your manufacturer support web site.

      -Eric

    21. Ah yes that makes sense – how simple. Thank you very much; appreciate you taking the time to answering my question.

    22. I need help, I dont know if maybe it didnt burn correctly, I used imgburn to burn the disc, but I cant do a complete pc restore because it says:
Windows cannot find a backup on the hard disks or DVD’s on this computer. Attach the correct hard disks or insert the last backup DVD and start the restore process again.

I also tried to reinstal vista, I enter my product key and click next, and I get a message saying:
Windows cannot open the required file E:\Sources\Install.wim. The file does not exist. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070002

Am I doing something wrong? Or missing something? any help would be great.. Thank you

    23. 26. Thanks for your great help!!. I use Vista and Ubuntu on my HP laptop and all of a sudden, Vista refused to boot today. Though I had system recovery available (both drive and DVD), they really didn’t help me but yours did..Thanks again for your help!.

    27. I have a week old quad core HP HDX18. I just got it to where I want it as far as apps loaded, the way it looks, etc. It is a sweet machine. This is about a week’s worth of tweaking, loading software, settings, etc. The Adobe master collection did an Internet update and wanted to reboot. I told it to reboot later but then manually rebooted, and I got the dreaded black screen complaining about \Boot\BCD missing. In my preparation to commit hari kari, I searched and found this site and downloaded the Vista64 Recovery disc torrent from a desktop machine. I burned it, booted the notebook from it – it told me that it detected a boot error for the installation and wanted to fix it, so I let it. I am happy to report that the notebook then booted fine and all my stuff was there. I am now burning recovery disks and doing a FULL system backup to an external USB2 hard disk, just in case. I can tell you that my heart almost stopped when that happened. I have no idea exactly what caused it. I have used the Adobe master collection internet update on a Vista32 notebook with no problems at all. The only other thing that happened was that I mistakenly rebooted the machine with my external usb2 disk connected, maybe that caused it on the 64-bit machine, or perhaps some other weird combination or sequence of unseen events… I really don’t know.

    28. Downloaded and tried this disk and it boots but never gives me an option to access my recovery partition. Is there something I need to do?

    29. Computer Guru,

I was on my Toshiba laptop and started a windows update, however the update on the Pc did not finish and my computer froze, I then went to reboot the PC and i got this error when the PC re started:
windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing or corrupt

Will this recovery disk recover anything on my PC?
      Please help!
      Thanks,
      Joanna

    30. Maybe someone can help me here.

      I keep getting this:

      File: Boot\BCD
      Status: 0xc000001
An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

I put in this recovery disc and after selecting Repair Computer no OS and/or drivers is found. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

    31. hello guru,

    33. My Laptop is Toshiba Sat. Model L300-1A3
      Model Number : PSLB8E-01200HAR
      serial is : Z8877057G

i just download this disc , but it’s ask me for a serial Number ?

      please provide ?

another thing i have a image on my laptop is Boot.wim
i think it’s the windows , but i don’t know how to burn it on DVD ?

also please advise if you know

    34. @Amr: The serial number refers to the Windows Product Key. The simple answer is, you don’t have one. The long answer has already been posted before. Look through the comments.

@vikrant: I posted links to the 32 bit and 64 bit up there. Search the comments.

    35. I recently ran system restore due to constant BSODs.
I didnt realise i had no vista cd to re-install it with, and keep getting a ‘configuration error’ everytime i switch my computer on and it wont boot.
I borrowed a vista ultimate disk off a friend but it wouldnt work,
      what shall i do?

    36. @Gaurav: That disc contains the Windows Operating System. It is merely the cost for replacing the one that was lost, or in most cases, never made.

The prices for a retail version of Windows Vista does not cost $20.
      http://www.google.com/products?q=windows+vista&aq=f

If you are just trying to fix simple boot issues that your Windows box is having, then, yes, something like the Recovery Discs (the point of this web page) is a free solution, other than the cost for a disc, to your problem.

If you are trying to do a fresh installation of Windows, there is no way you can obtain a legal copy of Windows for less than a dollar.
