Disk for recovery & repair
If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.
Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.
Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.
It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.
The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.
The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

I downloaded the ISO file and booted my puter, got to the screen to ‘repair’, then get screen to select operating system to repair and there is no operating system listed. So then it says to click ‘load drivers’, then it goes to screen says ‘insert the installation media for the device and click ok to select the driver’. But, I can not find any files on the disk that contains the drivers. Every file that I choose, it says ‘the specified location does not contain information about your hardware’. Any suggestions? or solutions?

It is really incredible how many DUMB folks use computers!
No idea what they ar doing, no idea what the technology is about, NO IDEA!
I wnat EVERY ONE OF YOU THAT DOES NOT KNOW WHAT A TORRENT IS, OR WHAT AN ISO IS, to GO PAY A COMPUTER CONSULTANT TO FIX YOUR SHIT!
Just GO PAY THEM and STOP being such numbnuts dumb turds!
DAMN.
@annoyed with humans: I understand why you feel this way, but no one is born knowing everything, if anything, about computers, not even you. Next to a computer engineer, the same thing can be said about you what you said about others. Unless, you have a PhD in all areas of computer science, then I stand corrected. But you don’t. So, if you don’t have anything constructive to say, please keep the flaming down to yourself. It’s not nice.
-Eric
Thank you Eric, i was previously given those same instructions for my problem but it still doesn’t work lol, do you have any other ideas or im thinking i may just be better off paying for it to be fixed by a technician.
@Chantal: Try a system recovery with the recovery discs that came with your computer (call and order them from your manufacturer) rather than from the recovery partition.
If this error came from after using your recovery discs, contact your manufacturer and let them know that you got an error after using there recovery discs. They should attain some responsibility for it. If you play your cards right, they may send you a fresh copy of your recovery discs free of charge.
If all the hardware on your computer is good, then your recovery discs should be guaranteed to work.
-Eric
@Eric ty again, this problem happened after i did a System recovery, i had done one b4 with no problems and the notebook was playin up to no end so i decided to do another i should have just left it lol, So this disc works all the way up till and past the language installation screen and to the product key then i get the message that Windows cannot open the required file E:\Sources\Install.wim. The file does not exist. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code 0x800700002 …..
What does this mean???? and am i just wasting my time completely with this disc? I never got recovery discs and i don’t remember making any when i first got the notebook i wasn’t aware i had to i have only been using computers for a couple of years now and although i am a quick learner and have resolved most of my own issues and queries this is one tht has me bugged, Ty for your help btw its much appreciated…Chantal
@ Eric thnk you again, so am i wasting time with this disc? i can almost get it to work but when i enter my product key during installation is says another error message about files not existing? so i dont know anymore?
@Chantal: The wording is a bit confusing, but you must use the recovery discs from your manufacturer (Toshiba, Dell, for example). The recovery discs from this web site is only for repairing your Windows system; and not for installation purposes.
If you never received recovery discs when you bought your new computer, then you had to use their Recovery Discs Creator program. It saves them money, so they stopped including recovery discs. It’s a logical business decision. To my knowledge, I know Dell includes recovery discs with all their new computers, still.
The next thing for you to do is to contact your manufacturer and order recovery discs for your model either through the phone or their online contact form (if they have one).

Hello,
I desperately need this disk but torrent downloads are blocked at my university as are downloading files from ‘filesharing’ websites such as Rapidshare and Megaupload.
If someone can provide me with a download link that’s not a torrent or on one of these aforementioned sites (or similar file uploading sites) then I’ll be extremely grateful. (I’m after the 32 bit version).
Better yet if someone could attach and email me the ISO that would be great.
Thanks.
@nima hey my email is lacey.2781@hotmail.com ill be happy to send you the email just send one to me so i have your addy okay.
Hey Chantal I sent you an email…did you receive it?
A few days ago my vista froze and my hard disk activity was non-stop…
I got this weird ‘gut feeling’ of i think there’s a virus deleting my data…
So i force shutdown the machine.
When I rebooted vista did a severe ‘fixing myself’ process that took me 2 hours.
The machine runs but the registry apparently has been rendered useless… old programs don’t work, new programs can’t register new keys so they can’t install…
awesome stuff.
I have to say, vista has been very reliable for me in the past so this is the first time in 3 years that i need to ‘recover’ it unlike my previous experince with XP….
so now, 3 years later, i can’t find my disk …
Thank you for this torrent!
i hav did it al how it is suposed, but when i insert the disk and bot it i get like 5 seconds :
press any key to boot from cd or dvd…
but i cant press any button, and after 5 seconds the message: bootmgr is compressed, press ctrl + alt + del to restart appears…
what should i do…
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!
When my HP Laptop wouldn’t boot up I was really upset.
With your Vista Recovery Disc and your instructions I was able to repair my Vista System and now my computer works as good as new.
HI, I tried to DL the 32 bit torrent. My DL manager keeps timimg out and re-connects to the tracker continuously. Could be that I am stationed in Iraq! Could you try to send that iso to me by email?
Thanks.
Hey.
My Dell Inspiron is KSODing on trying to use the reinstallation disc Dell sent out with the laptop. Will this possibly be able to help repair my Windows seeing as the repair option on the laptop isn’t working? (also just going straight to KSOD)
My laptop is (was) running Windows Vista SP2 X64.
My laptop brand/model is Asus G50V. The all come pretty standardized.
It currently displays the following error at starttup:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer
2. Choose you language settings, and then click “Next.”
3. Click “Repair your computer.”
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
File: \Windows\system32\config\system
Status: 0xc000014c
Info: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt.
The error occurred when I plugged my iphone into my USB port. Upon doing so, the computer abruptly powered off and began displaying the aforementioned error.
I downloaded the x64 torrent and burned the ISO file to a CDR (the instructions here are clear that it need not be a DVDR). I entered the system BIOS and set the Boot priority to CD/DVD. However, when I insert the CD into the drive windows does not recognize that there is a CD in the drive and nothing happens. I responded by disabling all boot options except for the CD/DVD drive – the result being repeated demands for me to input the appropriate boot device or media.
Things I am certain of:
1. The Computer recognizes the CD/DVD drive in the BIOS
2. The Computer recognizes both hard drives in the BIOS
3. The ISO file was burned successfully
4. Asus sucks balls for not giving me the real DVD so I could do this the easy way
Thanks for all the help.
Re-burned using image burn and a DVD as the file worked right for too many people for me to just “let it go” and this time it worked correctly.
Am going through the repair procedure now.
I will update with success or more questions if necessary.
Thank you!
SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!
This website is epic. You guys are epic. Writing about successfully repairing your computer is epic. Even the word epic is epic.

thanks
I feel silly asking this, but my work computer will not allow me to access torrent files, nor download programs like utorrent. Is there somewhere I can download the actual .iso file?
Clicked on: Windows Vista 32-Bit (x86) Recovery Disc Torrent – downloaded file is only 19.1Kb – What happened to 120Mb?
Vista_Recovery_Disc.iso.torrent
To Brian:
Go here to this link and scroll down to the instruction’s section -> http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/download-windows-vista-x64-recovery-disc/
” Torrent files are like a shortcut, they tell a download manager on your PC where to download the actual files from. Downloading large & important system files with torrents is highly recommended since torrents are protected against corrupt downloads and tend to be faster when well-shared. ”
Basically you need to download (if you haven’t already) a program that can open torrents such as µTorrent.
Is it possible to get this as direct download from somewhere like Media fire or something? I’m afraid that my institution doesn’t allow torrenting from their network for reasons of piracy, etc. If it’s only 120mb, it shouldn’t be that difficult.
I have burned this twice once to dvd and once to cd it will not install error is install.wim is missing the only file is boot.wim can I change the name so my system will use it?
Actually, Dell bundles computers with a full installation disc. In fact, Dell discs are OEM copies, so one key works on all computers…
Downloaded the image 32 bit (x86), ave speed 154kb/s,,,, its nice to have more tools if a problem should arise,, so far no problems…lol
Cheers
Hi There’s an awful lot of posts to go through but having been through them all twice it appears ( unless I’ve missed them which is quite possible lol ) that there is no post to address probably the most common query i.e. missing install.wim file.
I’ve burnt the disc a couple of time as per instructions but still keep getting same error. If anyone can help me I’d be most grateful. andycnffc@aol.com thanks in advance
I finally gave up on this and ordered the System Recovery DVD Disks from HP for $15…..that actually solved my problem (missing boot mgr error) that this download would not repair. The only reason that I am posting this here is because I could not find anywhere that getting the disks from HP would even work after this download (or my own recovery disks) did not work. Just wanted to let you know that it did work for me (just when I had decided that my computer was ‘toast’)
I tried the new vista recovery disk, no problems , a screen popped up and said install vista in en default ect, if your having a problem look at the posts. CHEERS
There’s a Windows 7 version of this disc now available for download, also made available by NeoSmart Technologies.
Download: http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/windows-7-system-repair-discs/
im having problems with the file. Whenever I open the file after it’s done downloading, it automatically converts from an iso file to a RAR file. I was wondering if rhere is any way to fix this or if I can just burn the RAR file to a disc and boot from there?
I am about to try this recovery disc. I am just wondering if I have to make backup-CDs of all my personal files and emails?
@Martin: It might be easier to copy your files to an external hard drive or flash drive than burning everything to a non-reusable CD.
-Eric
I downloaded and used your iso file to boot up and got so far as to get an error that said it couldn’t find the file in the E drive. The partition I’m trying to get to is in the D drive and there is NO WAY to change the drive letter. Do you have any way that I can change it or do you have another file that will look in the D drive?
Thanks
Hello,
I also hot the same error that it want files from E-drive. What shall I do?
Dear freind,
I just wanted to thank you for proposing this great post. I got a new tohsiba laptop (as you said without vista recovery, toshiba recovery will only allow to format and fuck up all your old stuff). My problem is that I was migrating from XP and have a lot of old applications very hardly compatible with Vista. I spent 15 days migrating and fine tuning Vista installtion to make all my old (corporate) soft work. Finally, when I was done i got a “bootmgr is missing” message at startup, I was on the edge of suicide : you saved my life, thanks dude again.
I would just like to thank the authors for saving me quite a bit of time and money. After my HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop shutdown, with 5% power remaining, it started having a boot error when I recharged and restarted it. I called HP, and since I bought my computer 18 months ago, I was told that just to talk to them one time would be $99. I am not the most computer savvy person, but I thought this was too much for someone just to listen to me. I had the recovery disks already made, but I did not want to lose my hard drive, since according to Windows, there was nothing wrong with it. I followed your directions and was able to create an installation disk. My whole life is on my hard drive and your advice SAVED MY PERSONAL AND COLLEGE LIFE!!! I have learned a lesson and will be purchasing a portable HD to back up my files from now on. Regardless, thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!
Can I just mount the .iso image or should I really need to burn it?
Can i do it from a flash drive?
Okay so I made the disc and It booted and everything. So when I go to do a complete PC restore, like back to factory settings it says that I don’t have anything to back it up from. I have everything saved on my external hardrive, but my friend says I need to save the OS to the hard drive as well. I just want to reformat and start from scratch. Any suggestions?
Thank you very much for this wonderful tool. My Laptop was under warranty and the OEMs solution entailed data loss for items between backups. Your solutions worked wonderfully. I must admit I had to try numerous items ( users error)but i finally REALLY read the directons…kevin
