Disk for recovery & repair
If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.
Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.
Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.
It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.
The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.
The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

Hi, thanks a million for your rescue CD. I’ve only so far used it to recover my BCD, but would also like to use it for restoring backups.
Thought I would point out this url:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927391
To fix my problem, I had to go to a command prompt during the rescue, delete the BCD, and recreate it. This is the second time I’ve had to do this. Is there something wrong with the disk?
This happened after Windows Update decided to turn my laptop from Suspend mode to “awake”, added a few patches, and rebooted to “can’t find \boot\bcd”.
My Toshiba laptop doesn’t come with a Rescue CD, just a CDROM to rebuild the whole Vista install.
Thanks again,
Dave

Hi .I have an acer 5735z under warrenty.I dint make any recovery/backup disk(I know) two month later I get the error loading os messege.Pc world tell me its a software prob. and not thier prob.as I should have made a rec.disk. The fault then changed to disk access error .this was a faulty hard drive which they replaced. So with a new drive and windows basic (which came with it)I thought “better make a backup this time.
Tried to bthru the acer recovery manegement software but it wouldnt do it,just ran for hours froze the screen and wrote nothing.Acer online support told me that the os propably wasnt loaded withe the recovery partition properly so get the “techguys” to install it again.
Pc world said it wasnt thier prob. as it was installed from a mirror of my original os (which I should have backed up),so go away.
Will making a disk from this site solve my probs. and which should i make?
Thanks very much,Bry
Guru,
Two days ago I woke up to find that an automatic update had an error which caused my vista to crash, My computer informed me that I needed to reinstall Vista to correct the error. I, now realising that this was a stupid move, followed these instruction, only to realise that everything on my computer was erased. I’m trying to restore my computer to what it was, and was hoping that you could help me with this. Is there any way to restore what I lost, favorites, documents, etc?
Thanks,
Rodge
@Rodge: If you cleaned your system using “(Quick)” format, you might still be able to retrieve your files (only if nothing has been written of them).
Stop whatever activity you are doing on your computer.
Remove your hard disk and connected it as an additional drive on another computer.
On the other computer, download and use the following recovery tools:
DiskDigger -http://dmitrybrant.com/diskdigger
FreeUndelete – http://pcsupport.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=pcsupport&cdn=compute&tm=450&f=00&su=p284.9.336.ip_p504.1.336.ip_&tt=3&bt=1&bts=1&zu=http%3A//majorgeeks.com/FreeUndelete_d4407.html
Recuva – http://pcsupport.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=pcsupport&cdn=compute&tm=22&f=00&su=p284.9.336.ip_p504.1.336.ip_&tt=4&bt=1&bts=1&zu=http%3A//www.recuva.com/download/builds
Roadkil’s Undelete – http://www.roadkil.net/program.php?ProgramID=28
Usually, just one will be enough, but I have found that results may vary from one program to the next. So, its better to try more than one.
Good luck.
-Eric
Guys, hold on. Rodge may not have necessarily erased the disk during the install, but instead installed over the existing install, and Rodge’s data is still there. Use this Vista Rescue disc and go to a command prompt. Change to C:\Users\\ where “” is your normal user account name, like “rodge” for example. Do “dir” and see if there are any files there you recognize first.
Don’t jump to conclusions and think you have to take drastic measures to recover data that may still be there. Eric is right, though, don’t make any more write changes to the disk until you find out what shape it’s in.
Best,
Dave
Okay, I’m not that computer smart, but if i use “dir” in command prompt when my computer is already running I don’t see anything from before the install, all I see are files from after. When I restart and use the boot, I see some files from before, what do I do now?
Rodge
man i hope this one works.,
Heyy guys.. i downloaded the 32bit recovery disc.. it loads up and everything.. but when i click repair.. it starts it.. but keeps going on for hours….. does not restart my laptop.. CAN SOMEONE PLEEASEE HELP ME OUT
THANKS IN ADVCANCE…
ASUS LAPTOP
DOES NOT REPAIR.. KEEPS GOING ON…
Mike,
What is the reason you’re using the boot disc in the first place? What problem are you actually having? Be as descriptive as possible. Is there a reason you can’t contact your place of purchase for support, or is it no longer under warranty?
What do you mean the rescue disc “keeps going on”? Do you mean the CDROM drive keeps spinning for hours and never actually boots into the rescue disc? Is it possible the drive or media is defective, or you did not burn it properly?
Does your laptop recognize the hard disk when the system boots? What happens if you try and boot your laptop without the CDROM in the drive?
Best,
Dave
Is this Vista 32-bit torrent still active? There don’t appear to be any seeders.
Thanks for any info.
While I think this is great to have been made available here- a tutorial on how to use each option would have been nice.
You’ve got the files made available, tutorials on how to burn the image- but no tutorial on how to use the options available.
No wonder there is so much confusion and so many posts requesting assistance!
But thanks for making it available! (seriously)
Respect!
You are like an oasis in this vast computer desert.
As an old computer geek, when my 2 days old Vista laptop gave me the famous “Bootmgr missin” message I just loughed and thought that this would be easy to solve with a boot disk… Right: a boot disk and Vista… There is still lots to learn! Thanks to MS for giving you the occasion to be someone’s hero, right?
Hey dave thanks so much for replying
the reason i am trying to boot my laptop is because while i was trying to do my assignment … my laptop suddendly FROZE… so i pressed the shutdown button.. and it switched off.. when i tried switchin it back on .. it gets to the stage where windows vista bar is loading.. ( the bars keep going across.. but my windows doesnt load up) so that bar just keeps on going.. i tried pressing enter… esc.. everythin but it still keeps on going…
so this is the reason i decided to BOOT with the recovery disc from here.. because when i switched it off again .. black screen came up with safe mode.. and good config .. and the rest.. i tried to go with safe mode.. the screen scrolls down but nothing happens..
so i inserted the recovery disc that came with my laptop.. it doesnt load up .. meaning.. it boots but doesnt give me any options such as to repair or to install..
but with this recovery disc from here.. it allows me the option to repair or install after i pick the language … BUT WHEN I CLICK REPAIR.. IT LOADS UP .. BUT THE BLUE BAR KEEPS ON SEARCHING AND REPAIRING FOR HOURS N HOURS.. IT DOESNT DO NOTHING..
HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP ME OUT..
THANKS A LOT GUYS..
There is a new comment on the post “Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download”.
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/
Mike,
It sounds like you want something different than the Vista Rescue disc. This disc is for recovering from initial boot problems, such as from a corrupt master boot record or initial boot information.
It sounds like you have more of a hardware problem or problem with Windows registry.
It might be a good idea to make sure you don’t have problems with the computer’s memory. Download the following and burn it to a CDROM:
http://memtest86.org/
Put the disc into your laptop CDROM drive and reboot. Let it run for at least two hours. If it finds no errors, then go here:
http://neosmart.net/forums/
Try posting your question there, being sure to provide as much information as possible on what you have already done and what type of laptop you have.
You might also want to find out the manufacturer of your hard disk, and find the hard disk analysis program on their website to make sure there isn’t a problem with your hard disk that is causing this trouble.
Regards,
Dave
I have downloaded the disk recovery. It boots fine, but how do I reinstall Windows? My hard drive was formatted when I tried to recover, still have boot partition, but I can’t reinstall Vista from the boot partition. The CD does not install Windows, just offers recovery–need to install windows. I have a valid product code, but cannot seem to figure out how to reinstall from the recovery partition (keep getting error when I use the recovery program–it wiped out my c drive, but won’t reinstall) Any ideas?
Lyn, it is not possible to reinstall Vista using the Recovery Disc. It is only for recovering boot problems with Vista. For reinstallation, you must use your original Vista media provided with your computer.
Regards,
Dave
I am trying to download the recovery disc and every time I try, I get “problem loading page” – my internet is slow but other websites that I access work just fine…any suggestions?
I’ve downloaded the recovery disc and all.. but when it starts loadind it says that the install. file is missing.. what should I do?
MissETZ, you are trying to download the bittorrent version, correct? Do you have a bittorrent client properly configured? Have you read the instructions on how to properly download?
You may also download from here:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/jjgn2zommoz/cybernetnews
This is a straight download and does not require a bittorrent client, but is not going to be as fast or as reliable.
Hope this helps,
Dave
Isabelle, you need to be more specific. What is the error message, exactly? Where did you download the rescue CDROM from? What method did you use to burn the image to a CDROM?
It sounds like something went wrong during the download or burning process. Burn the image again at the lowest speed setting on your CDROM writer, typically 4x, to be sure.
If you still have a problem, describe your setup further. What type of computer? What is the problem you’re having? What other things have you done to try and fix the problem?
Can you boot the CDROM on the same computer you burned it on successfully?
Regards,
Dave
Dave,
Thanks for putting that other link for the Vista Recovery Disc I have successfully downloaded it. I’ve been trying for days with the other BitTorrent link but didn’t receive anything at all, so thanks again. I don’t actually need it yet, but I suppose I’d better do a dry run through to see if it goes through the motions now, before I really need it as it wouldn’t be much good if it didn’t work then would it.
I burned the image as suggested with ImageBurn, as I have previously had problems with Nero burning the odd bootable image, that wouldn’t work. I normally use Nero 6 on XP and Vista but I have Nero 9 installed on Widows 7 64-bit as there seemed to be some problems with Nero 6. I’d much rather use Nero 6 as it’s nowhere near as bloated as the newer ones.
Here’s hoping I don’t have the problems that a few of the people on this forum are having I’ll get back to you and let you know how it went.
Dave gazillions THANKS!!!!
I downloaded the link, rebooted the laptop and it’s running now ;)) Thank you so much for all your help and swiftness ;))
~MissETZ
Hello,
Thanks for the download. I have burnt it to a disc with ImgBurn and booted from it. It all seemed to work fine until I got to the Product Key part.
The key I have (which I found in Control Panel\System and Security\System in the section Windows Activation>Product ID) is in the form XXXXX-XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXX while the Vista Recovery thing appears to need a key in the form XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.
I am trying to use this on my TOSHIBA laptop that came with Vista installed and no recovery disc. I hope someone can help.
Thanks =]
the download doesn’t work for me, is it a problem on my side or a problem with the site?

Miko, it’s a problem on your side. How are you trying to download it? Provide more information so we may help you more effectively. Have you installed a bittorrent client on your PC and configured it properly? Have you read the instructions on how to properly download?

It appears that the Windows 7 torrent links are working for me, but the Vista 64 (which I need) is not. I get the following error:
“Failed to Connect
Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at neosmart.net:6969.
Though the site seems valid, the browser was unable to establish a connection.
* Could the site be temporarily unavailable? Try again later.
* Are you unable to browse other sites? Check the computer’s network connection.
* Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.”
To reiterate, the Windows 7 links ARE working, so I don’t know what the problem could be.
Any ideas?
I am trying to find the ISO file for the Windows Vista 32-Bit Recovery Disk, and you still have the link to download it from your website. But every time I try to download the torrent, both in Firefox or Internet Explorer, I get an error saying that a connection cannot be established with the server at neosmart.net:6969
Is the server down?
Do you still have the file available? If not, do you know where I can obtain a copy?
Thank you for any assistance in this matter you can give.
Sincerely,
Zane B Stein
Hi. If you’re having difficulty downloading the Vista Rescue CDROM via bittorrent, please try the following link:

Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Dave
Tried out the disc although didn’t actually do a repair as my system is still OK. Just making sure it will boot for when it may be needed.
Thanks for for the disc and all the help. I’ve now put the disk image I got from the mediafire download site, in the torrent folder and it is uploading now, but it only seems to be with dht so maybe it’s a problem with my hosts file. I’ll have to investigate.
Thanks again for a fantastic repair tool and all the help, and keep up the good work.
You are amazing!! Thank you.
Microsoft is such a horrible company; this should be available to everyone, rather than having to go to some scary places (ie torrent world).
Oh man!!! I have problems. I used Reg Easy and ever since then my laptop won’t boot. I can get in with Spotmau and see all directories and get into reg edit etc.
Spotmau replaced the ntoskrnl and other boot files but still not go.
Here is the latest recovery effort. Can any help with some ideas???
When I use the DVD to reboot and select repair the system goes off checking and doing stuff for some time then returns a box saying ?Windows cannot repair this computer automatically?

Hello @all
I just downloaded the “Windows Vista 32-Bit (x86) Recovery Disc Torrent” burned it to a dvd and put it into the laptop I want to fix.
It then kinda boots from the disc but halts at a black screen with just the mouse cursor on it?
ANY help is appreciated, is this normal? should it be a menu where you can select the repair options ?
Thanks for your kindness
Naveen, no that’s not normal. It’s possible you have another issue. Download memtest+ from the following site:
http://www.memtest.org/
Burn it to a CDROM by following the directions, and boot your computer using it. Let it run for a few hours to see if it detects any memory or processor errors.
You may also want to download the utility from the manufacturer of the hard disk in your laptop, and analyze the disk for possible hardware errors.
Regards,
Dave
As I mentioned before I have downlaoded the 32 bit recovery disk ( done this several times now ) but when run I get after entering my reg no – missing install.wim file message. If I were to add this file to the resources dir om the disk would this solve my problem.

Hi @ all i have one question where is the product key i need it for the installation please answer fast thanks for up
Hi Team,
I am stuck at a peculiar problem.
I had some file in Windows XP as in encrypted format. Some how the windows got crashed. I have installed a fresh copy of windows xp again. Now the issue is i am not able to access the encrypted files. It gives me a access denied error.
After all this happening the partition on which the files were, was formatted some how. I have recovered the files for this partition after the format. The file size is the same as that it was earlier.
I want to know is it possible to get access to these files and view then once again. i can see that the other files which were not encrypted(and has been recovered after the system crash and partition format) can be viewed. But not the one which were encrypted.
Any help on this will be highly appreciated.
You can reply to me mail id (i.e spentza_will@yahoo.co.in) directly.
Thanks in advance for any help.

hi, i hope this disc works as i have a hp6735s that keeps coming up with BOOTMGR compressed after i did a dual boot, Any ideas?
I have an Acer Aspire 5100. I downloaded the Vista ISO and copied it with imgburn. I can boot it with my laptop but it wosays it repairs successfully but then when I retwart it it won’t start without the boot disk and then I just have to go through all the same stuff again. I tried start up repair and restore to certain point but with not luck. when I did go to restore I noticed that my D: drive was not on there. Should it be. That is supposed to be where the vista files are. If I go to the prompt from the repair screen it won’t let me change to d: or c: drives. It will only let me see the x: drive. Is that normal? PLEASE HELP ASAP.
Thank you,
DB
im not very familiar with iso files, but i know how to burn one to disk, however when i download the 32 bit vista file there is no ‘iso’ file in it only a
