Disk for recovery & repair

If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.

Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.

Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.

The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

    1. Hello – thanks for the iso. I seem to have a little problem of perpetual loop going on. I can use the CD I created to recover windows, but it was a windows update that was installing that corrupted vista to begin with. That same update keeps installing itself every time I recover with the CD. I can’t get past it to get into windows to purge the bad update. I have a Compaq Presario C700 and I didn’t make any CDs to perform a full re-install. Any suggestions on how to kill the update would be helpful. PS does anyone know if the manufacturers are legally obligated to supply us a Recovery CD without charge? I have heard so many different rumors. I see both sides of the arugement but what does the law state?
      Thanks,
      Keith

    2. I appreciate the info, but thanks for nothing. What’s with this Torrent crap? I have looked at this type of download before and tried it. It’s pure crap. I had hell finding the program, half of them are proprietary and many include more bloatware and they are just plain slow. For someone who claims to want to help, you sure have a strange choice of distribution.

    4. Hi,

I did everything correct to burn the repair disc for my BSOD, I loaded it and got up to the option to select an operating system to repair but when I click on my system–which says Windows Vista (TM) Home Basic(recovered)–and press next it says:

“This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows.”

      I don’t know why it’s saying that I downloaded the 32bit which I’m almost sure I have.

Can anyone point me in the next direction?

    13. Hi Guru,

My mother upgraded her laptop Medion with Vista to Service pack 1 and couldn’t finalize correctly.
After that the laptop wouldn’t restart giving an error at startup (!! 0x0…..)
Now I downloaded this file and burned it with Imageburn like you recommended.
This worked fine to get into the recovery options but it couldn’t restore the system.
It keeps on giving a different 0x0… error.

      Any suggestions? Thanks a lot!!!

      Best wishes

    22. Hey Guru brother just wanted to let you know that you gave me the ray of sunshine that i was looking for with this VISTA crap. I did exactly what you said it got me 95% percent of the way thru everything. So thanks I just had to boot from the CD and then go the repair section of the program instead of the Install button. I took me a few times but i finally got it right. The repair didnt work but the program allow me to do a restore from another point and then everything was find. Thanks you da man

    23. It is my general consensus that most people should NOT even use computers as they’re clueless as to to what’s going on.
I see people mentioning that they didn’t get restore disks with their computer.
Last year, I purchased a new Acer Inspire 6920 and every single time I boot the computer, a pop-up message appears every couple of minutes nagging me to create a factory install recovery disk. If you just spend about 10 minutes burning the recovery disks, then you’ll have them!!!! I went ahead and ordered the recovery disks from Acer and spent and extra $10 to have them sent Fed-Ex next day. Little did I know that they were coming from Temple, Texas, and I’m in Killeen-25 miles away. If I would have ordered regular mail I would have gotten it on Saturday, but instead, Fed-Ex delivered them on Monday!!!! Check your systems people..Vista Ultimate even has the backup feature to create an image of your drive.

    24. Dear Guru,

Also I have a desktop and the USB port is not woring it works sometimes. I bought a PCI cars and it still cannot pick up but sometimes the port connects with my digital camera usb connection but with any other nothing connects. Any suggestions?

I am going mental as I have spend the entire weekend trying to fix this myself. Please help ASAP.

      Email me. Thank you Guru.

    25. thank you thank you thank you…I was ready to go out and buy an apple. The recovery disk should be part of the package like it was in the good old days. Easy to use, easy to follow steps. awesome.

    26. i did download window vista 64bit, but when i rebooted my laptop which was Toshiba Sattelite A205, it said that the system is not compatible with the cd, so what can i do now ? can u help me out?

    27. This solution worked perfectly on my Win 7 X64 system.

Ubuntu messed up my Win 7 Install and after an Acronis image recovery I got the missing Bootmgr error. The OEM disk would not fix it.

I found this post and all is well now.

      Thank you so much!

    28. Hello There,

This solution seems nice. I am trying to recover my windows via this, however, Its taking lot lot lot of time. It took me more than 30 minutes to reach “System Recovery Option” where I am still waiting..!!!

Is it normal or my laptop is crazy?

      Om

    29. Hello There,

While progressing I noticed that recovery option is unable to detect my operation system, when I click “Load Drivers” It asks for a disk. I am unable to access my C: during that time.

      Plz help.

    30. I downloaded a roxio 2010 torrent and cant access the file do I need to burn it to a disk before I can load the program on my pc also does it have to be burned as an image or a regular burn please help

    31. 1) Burn the ISO file to a CD-R disc and once completed proceed to step 2

      2) Place CD-R disn into CD drive and shutdown computer

      3) Right after you press the power button…rapidly press f11 and the space bar until a “files loading” screen comes up (OR PRESS THE 2 BUTTONS IN INTERVALS FOR LIKE 10-15 SECONDS THEN STOP AND WAIT)

      4) Let the files load and then a windows menu will popup asking how to install (it has color and everything, its very easy from here on)

    32. I have the same problem that Devileater wrote (in a earlier post in this forum):

“I’ve tried using this and it goes through the “Windows is Loading Files” screen and into the actual green windows loading bar, but after that it just sits at a black screen. I let it sit for roughly 20 minutes and it doesn’t change. Can anyone let me know why it isn’t working for me?”

I do the same, I am waiting for ages after the window loading bar! but I get nothing than a black screen!
His problem was solved when his friend came in (see earlier post in june 2008) but I am curious about how he got the problem solved?

Can somebody help me? I don’t know what to do anymore!

I have a windows vista 32 bit on a HP laptop DV 6000 series!

      Best,

    33. hello and thx for all, I own a VGN-NR150FE and after my laptop hitted the floor I can’t boot my PC because 0xc00000e9 status error shows up saying the Kernel cannot be found or is damaged. I downloaded the recovery disk for vista 32 but after the loading screen I only see a black screen with a moveable white cursor (don’t seems to be due to slow machine, it has been “stucked” in that phase, I can move the cursor but nothing else)). Any ideas to solve this problem?

      thx in advance.
      sorry for bad written words.

    34. Ha!! Here’s something funny – you can’t download anything PC if you’re running Mac!! My sister-in-law did not get a boot disc for her Vista HP so I said I would see if I could get one for her. Impossible!! I have a Mac (i’ll never need THAT headache again!!) and I can’t seem to download ANYTHING PC related. Go figure. Anyone know where I can get a boot disc for my sister?

    35. I need help!!! I am trying to load this on to my compaq presario f500, im having to use an external drive cause the one on the laptop is messed up for some reason and I can’t seem to figure out how to boot it! I don’t know where to begin on this

    36. Hi everything boots up fine when I go to repair computer windows file loads in box but my computer tells me that the (X-64) software doesn’t work with my version of windows yet I know that it is a 64 bit operating system not sure why this is happening but Im sure im not the only one

    37. I have a Compaq(HP) laptop and have lost or misplaced the recovery disk for my installation of Vista Business. The hardware has 3 year warranty which i have recently used to get a new hard drive. The HDD sent was the same size but a different manufacturer than the original. I used dd on linux to copy the old drive to the new one. I was happy when the machine booted right up and didnt really think anything about rebooting after it recognized the new hardware. Since then I have received a blue screen when booting normally, errors 0xc000000f and 0x19. I have downloaded the recovery disk mentioned on this page, http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ and used with no success. Why should it be so difficult to replace a hard drive. I know Microsoft does not like piracy, and cloning a hard drive for possible redistribution could lead to that, but they use many steps to verify an authentic installation. I am able to boot into safe mode which gives me hope, but i have found nothing significant on a web search for this problem.

    38. i installed the disk as advised and it came up asking for a product key so i entered the one on the bottom of the latop and it refused it, any ideas?

    39. Well, I think this recovery disk system sucks! The laptop I bought last year came with windows installed and DVD disk. Not wanting to be stuck with the installed Japanese OS, I stuck in the disk and asked for English–no key entered or anything.

Now, I want to buy one, but if there is no disk then I’m stuck in kanji hell. Considering that I paid for the pc, I think I deserve to get a language I can actually use without having to fork over a couple of hundred more.

If you ask me, microcrash is getting too big for its britches and needs to be taken down a peg or two.

    40. Does anyone know the below problem? I got in my laptop.
There’s been a local drive(RECOVERY) in every computer when bought for the first time.
This drive has been formated by mistake and now I am not able to reinstall operating system in my laptop, I have no operating system. The Windows CD which given with each computer it doesn’t work now.
      Hope you can help me.
      Thanks

    41. I installed it and everything is fine…. except that is asking me for a product key…. what can I do????
