Disk for recovery & repair
If you’re like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you’re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers.
Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don’t give you a real Windows Vista installation disk with your purchase.
Instead, they bundle what they call a “recovery disk” (that’s if you’re lucky – otherwise you’ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.
It doesn’t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license – your computer manufacturer just don’t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.
The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It’s not just a way to get Windows installed, it’s also the only way of recovering a borked installation.
The DVD has a “recovery center” that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

Guys,
I am from India and use a DELL laptop. Unlike in US where most of these manufacturers dont give the OS disks they do in India. Atleast DELL & LENOVO does. I used to work for HP and I know for a fact that they don’t give the disks initially in US or anywhere else. But a person who buys a HP machine can and should ask for the DVD within the first one year for home PC and within the first 3 months for business PC – cause during this time if you say your OS is corrupt and the recovery is not working – the company WILL give the CD/DVD for free. After the periods mentioned a minimum price is charged for these CD/DVDs and not freely distributed. Not to mention the fact that under certain circumstances the agent can also comp off the charge for the DVD and give it to you for free. Haven’t been able to understand this weird concept followed by HP and therefore bought a DELL.
Anyways the reason for posting this note is to make everyone reading it aware of this policy, so that everyone calls in to HP to get the DVD (with OS not booting issue and recovery partition failure) before time runs out.
I feel if you are buying a machine worth 500$ or more the OS DVD should be bundled. I feel these companies are the ones which with their weird policies force people to use pirated copies of the OS. Why would anyone wanna pay 600-800 $ for a PC and then spend another 200 $ on an OS. If they are trying to curb piracy by not giving the disks with the machines – they are infact promoting it.
Remember to give more than one call if the first agent refuses to give the DVD 😉 there are genuine honest guys like me who will stand up for what they believe is ethically correct.
Regards to all,
Good Luck.

Hi,
I have a laptop newely bought but due to some viruses I recovered it with a recovery disk. But after the completion of my recovery disk setup an error comes up during the startup but after the boot up screen, saying that “Windows could not install, to install Windows please restart” So i did, and this error comes up again. I did the whole process again, (using the recovery disk, asked for drivers, placed in the driver’s and utilities disk in) and then the error came up again.
I am using an ASUS F3SG laptop, newerly bought, just recently.
Its using Windows Vista Home Premium.
Will this Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download fix my problem?
This link downloads as a torrent file, not an iso. How do I get the ISO file?
I cannot download it 🙁
why only by torrent
Because thanks to hotlinkers, NeoSmart Technologies served 2TB of bandwidth for this file last month. That’s simply not in our budget; so torrents it is.
I’m not complaining about torrents but about the fact that it doesn’t download as an ISO file that I can burn to a disk,
I don’t have a problem with torrents but I do have a problem with the fact that the file doesn’t download as an ISO file which I could then burn to a CD
It most certainly does download as an .ISO file. Perhaps u simply dont know what to do with a torrent? Once u learn what a .torrent is and what u do with one, u r gonna feel kinda dumb.
Actually, it does…..
Once you DL the file with uTorrent, Azureus, Bitlord, Transmission, Deluge, etc. you’ll have Vista_Recovery_Disc.iso which you can burn directly to a CD or DVD.
That was my problem. I downloaded it directly which was instantenious. I have already download the ISO file from another site which took over 1 hr. Thanks anyway.
“That was my problem. I downloaded it directly which was instantenious.”
Well u r supposed to download a torrent file directly. A .torrent file is basically a text file that contains information about the actual file u want. Once u have the torrent file, u open it with a bittorrent program (a p2p program) and it takes the information contained in the torrent file and searches for other users who have that file and downloads the actual file from them. In other words, a torrent file is used to download another file. It contains the information that allows your bittorrent program to locate and download the actual file.
Life saver! Thanks!
The MBR had been corrupted when I used a BCD tool. Even though I fixed that it complained about about winload.exe.
Of course I could have used the Vista DVD, but when it’s 250 miles away and you need the laptop for work then that’s no good. This CD ISO worked a treat.
The only problem I had was downloading a torrent from within a corporate network, but I got it in the end!
Thanks again!
well, I just downloaded it, the one I downloaded is .torrent, and I have not used it, I wish it solves my problems. thanks Comp. Guru.
Hey all. I’m having some issues that I hope someone might be able to assist me with.
I have a MSI laptop that came pre-installed with Vista Premium Home Edition x32. Well, pre-installed in such a fashion that when I turned on my computer for the first time, I had to select what language I wanted and since I am from Denmark I chose Danish; after this, Vista installed. The only Vista related CD I received with my laptop is the standard “recovery” disc that basically formates the entire hard drive. Anyway, about a week ago I started my computer up and got the dreaded “BOOTMGR IS MISSING” error. Looked around, found this site, downloaded the .ISO, burned with ImgBurn and booted with it. No issues yet. However, when I have to select the operating system which I wish to repair, nothing shows up on the list! Following a note which appears at this stage, I have tried to load the drivers manually, but to no avail. In fact, I am unable to find them at all. If I simply skip this entire section and press next without selecting an operating system, I am, however, taken to the repair interface, the part where you can choose the different repair options. Unfortunately, none of them seem to function properly. When trying to run the startup repair, it says that it cannot repair the computer automatically. Likewise, trying to run the command prompt and using various recboot commands does not help at all.
I hope someone can help me! It would be much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Jacob

Andreas
Saved my life! Thanks, you guys are the greatest!
How we coming on getting the x64 version ready? I made one so i have that one but i want the one from here too.
🙂
I have a doc here at work who bought a refurb Sony laptop and apparently has a corrupt Vista file and wants to run a repair. I’ve never worked with ISO files before. When I click on the link above and save the file, it saves as a torrent file, and if I change the extension to ISO, the burner (CDBurnerXP) says it’s not a valid file.
When I click on the link and click Find, an IE window comes up like it’s looking for it, but ultimately, I get the page cannot be displayed error.
Would someone be so kind as to tell me how to correctly download this file???
Thank you!!
“Would someone be so kind as to tell me how to correctly download this file???”
U have to open the torrent file with a bittorrent program (a file sharing program) and then it will download the actual .ISO file u need. A program like utorrent or bittorrent is what u need.
Rejoice!!
Windows Vista x64 Recovery Disc now available!
I have a question that’s totally making me crazy. I purchased a new HP dv6700 with 2GB RAM and Windows Vista Premium, and as is typical, the computer came with a whole bunch of useless bloatware. In my perfect world of long ago, I would simply take a Windows XP disk and install a new copy of XP, but as I only have recorver disks and a recorvery partition, I’m not certain that would work. I’ve been slowly uninstalling some of the programs, but as I don’t know what many of them are, I’m concerned about deleting needed programs. Questions are thus: (1) From Vista’s Recovery disks or partition, can you install a “clean” version of Vista without all the bloatware; and (2) What kind of fee should I charge HP for reviewing all the advertising materials shipped on my new computer?
I ordered recovery disks from HP..
I did not make recovery disks before I clean wiped the hard drive and tried downgrading to XP. I know it was stupid of me, but I assumed vista to XP was possible like older version of windows. (well most of the old ones)
So if I get the recovery disks, will that give me vista ALL back, or just a platform to repair vista, I want the whole operating system back.
Please let me know. Thank you in advance.
Got my Toshiba back like factor NEW
hiya i need help!!
i purchased a new computer an advent t9608 uk.
it sopposed to already have vista on it, but when i set it up it takes me straight to boot manager. saying, files are either missing or corrupt. so i downloaded your file. put it as a ISO file put it in and its not even reaidng it :S:S
just goes to staright to the boot manager again..
any help please?
Wasn’t all of the manufacturer’s supposed to include a copy of the vista install media because of the Windows Anytime Upgrade feature?
“Supposed to” verses “actually ship” – big difference 🙂
does anyone know if you can still access the recovery partition (pressing F11) when you recover the boot section of your hard drive using this? thanx in advance
Hey,
Thank you SOOOOOOO MUCH for the article… with a HP Pavilion dv2000 which came with Vista but no disc, I installed Ubuntu and when it was time to remove it, boy was I stuck… Didn’t want to delete Ubuntu partitions and get stranded with unbootable Vista cos GRUB was removed abruptly… Had to make Vista bootlader take over and absence of installation DVD was my biggest prob… This torrent saved me !!!
Thanks again !!
I wonder if only me or is the download link is down?
I cannot dload the windows vista recovery torrent.
is there an alternative link?
Just you. Perhaps your ISP is blocking access to port 6969 so as to prevent the downloading of torrents?
Hi
I have dv9600 hp notebook .I connected to tv using s video cable guest what happen
stop working i turn off and stat blank screen.I’m trying to download recovery disk because I didn’t have chance make recovery disk using my notebook.
My question my be unrelated to this ISO as it’s used for repair, but:
I have a very simple request.
I recently purchased a Toshiba laptop with Vista Home Premium. I’d like to wipe it clean and install Home Premium without all the Toshiba junkware that comes on the recover CD. I have a valid Toshiba OEM key. I’ve read I can re-create install disks from OS, but have found no instructions on how to do it.
I simple want to re-install my Vista OS to eliminate all the Junkware. I’ve done this with every other Windows release, but can’t seem to do it for lack of OEM clean media.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
For what it is worth: a GIGANTIC thank you to the guys responsible for creating and distributing this !!
quick question on the vista recovery disks……does either one of them work with vista x32?? if not do you know where i could find one that will?

Hi, Is Vista 32 bit the x86 edition? I’m a bit confused – or a bit stupid.
I have downloaded the x86 and burned it to disc using your recommended utilities and all’s well.
32-bit is x86 and 64-bit is x64.
